Monday Morning Report

NL Player of the Week - Johnny Leger, SS, Washington (26-R .291/.357/.436) Had 11 hits with 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 BB, 2 SO, 3 R and 2 RBI in 6 G (2nd PoW in 3 weeks)
PCL Player of the Week - Ricardo Gil, P, Portland (22-R 6-3 2.49) Went 2-0 in 2 starts and allowed 1 run in 17.1 with 10 H, 3 BB and 12 SO.

(Slash lines are for the season, not the week)

July 23 - All the highlights I had typed out for this week have disappeared somehow and I am not going to redo them....

One big thing that I remember happening was that 1B Hilton Delaney (39-R) of New York got injured and will miss the rest of the season. He is leading the NL in HR and RBI.

Friday, August 3, 2001

As promised, Bobby Weatherford (30-R) was sent back to Vancouver (A) and RP Jeff Gleason (24-R) was recalled. He began the season with the Beavers.

The Hollywood Stars are in town to play a 3 game series over the weekend and finish up this home stand. They just lost 2 of 3 at their home to their crosstown rivals, the Angels. We are 1-5 against them this year and split 2 games with them the last time they were here, back in early June. They lead the PCL (and the Majors) in scoring with 4.86 runs per game (Portland is still last with 3.66). Their batters are hitting .285 with a .782 OPS as a team; we only have two hitters that are hitting that well... They are 14th in fewest runs allowed with 4.91 per game (Portland is up to 7th with 4.33).

Hollywood Stars (54-54 .500 12 GB in 5th place place in the PCL West) at

HOL: Ellison Anderson (29-R 1-2 3.34) vs. POR: Ricardo Gil (22-R 6-3 2.49) Rookie

We have not faced Anderson before. He is extremely injury prone and had had to leave both of his last two starts early with health issues. In 8 starts, he has only pitched 29.2 innings. He's been pretty good when he can go.

In his 4 starts since returning from the DL, Gil has not allowed more than 1 run in any of them and he has won all 4.

Another new low in attendance... Vancouver, our A ball team, is playing in New Orleans tonight and the attendance is almost double what we have here in Portland....

There are advantages to an empty park! For example, for the spectators, there's more room to put your things in the three seats on either side of your own bum.

We are back in Sacramento to play a pair of games. We were here two weeks ago and swept the Solons in 3 games. They just won 2 of 3 here from Seattle. We are 5-4 against them on the season. They are 15th in scoring in the PCL with 3.88 runs per game (Portland is 16th (last) with 3.60). If we can beat them by 30 runs today, we can move out of last place! They are last in HR (55). We are last in BA (.239) and walks (305), which gives us an OBP (.297) 20 points lower than anyone else. The Solons are 5th in fewest runs allowed with 4.06 per game (Portland is 7th with 4.29).

We are in the Lone Star state to play San Antonio a 4 game series through the weekend. They just split a pair of games here with Houston. We swept them in 4 games back in early April in Portland. The Missions are 14th in the PCL in scoring with 3.90 runs per game (Portland is still last with 3.67). They are 8th in fewest runs allowed with 4.39 per game (Portland is 7th with 4.27).

Portland Beavers (46-66 .411 23.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West) at
San Antonio Missions (45-67 .402 19 GB tied for 7th (last) place in the PCL East)

POR: Ricardo Gil (22-R 6-3 2.24) Rookie vs. SA: Cal Ferguson (31-R 4-3 4.44)

Gil is 4-0 in his 5 starts since returning from the DL with only 3 earned runs allowed. He only gave up 1 unearned run last time out in 7.1 IP, but did not get a decision. He is due for a major ERA correction...

We faced Ferguson back in April and got 9 hits and 4 runs in 6 IP and beat him.
