We are back home to play the Denver Bears a 4 game series. They just split 4 games at home with Sacramento. We are 2-2 against them this season. I just realized that I have been mentioning in previous series that this is so and so's first trip to Portland, but we only play 8 games with each team from the East and we each only make one trip to visit each other. The Bears are 11th in the PCL in scoring with 4.19 runs per game (Portland is still last with 3.78). Being 11th when you play your home games in Denver is pretty pathetic. Of course, being last in our park is even worse... They are 15th in fewest runs allowed with 5.22 per game (Portland is 8th with 4.43). They have the worst team ERA in baseball (4.90).

Denver Bears (54-82 .397 24 GB tied for 5th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (54-82 .397 26 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

DEN: Jesus Carrasquillo (34-L 5-10 5.42) vs. POR: John Cox (28-L 1-4 5.31) Rookie

We beat Carrasquillo in Denver, scoring 7 runs in 6.2 IP.

Cox pitched a shutout in his last start for Vancouver (A). He got shelled both times in the two starts before that.

3B/OF Franklin Felix (24-R) is ready to come off the DL, so he was activated and OF Sergio Vallejo (27-R) was sent back to Vancouver (A).

Not a good day today....but we will pass on comment about that.

We are in Hollywood to begin a 3 game series with the Stars. They just beat Seattle 2 of 3 here. We are 1-10 against them on the season, the worst record we have against any team. We were just here two weeks ago and lost a pair of games, getting outscored, 15 to 2. The Stars are 4th in the PCL in scoring with 4.75 runs per game (Portland is still last with 3.80). Hollywood leads the League in 2B (238) and BA (.282) and are only 2 off the lead in BB (529). As you would expect, that gives them the lead in OBP (.348). We are last in BB (426) and OBP (.304). San Diego Padres (84-66 .560 3.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (62-88 .413 25.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

SD: John Riley (25-R 14-10 2.17) vs. POR: Ricardo Gil (22-R 9-5 3.09) Rookie

Riley is 1-0 in 3 starts against us and we only scored 3 total runs in 27 IP (1.00 ERA). He is their #1 starter. If we cannot hit a pitcher with a 5.66 ERA like Gordon yesterday, we have no chance against Riley today...

Gil allowed 2 runs in 6.1 IP last time out and got a win.

C Jim Shippy has the flu...

The Oakland Oaks are in Portland to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just lost a pair of games in Sacramento, but even so, are 12-6 in September and 38-26 (.594) since the All-Star break, the 2nd best record in the PCL behind the just departed San Diego Padres. We are 5-5 against them on the season, but got swept in 3 games the last time they were in Portland at the beginning of August. They are 7th in the PCL in scoring with 4.46 runs per game (Portland is last with 3.79). The Oaks are 10th in fewest runs allowed with 4.44 per game (Portland is 8th with 4.36).

Oakland Oaks (77-74 .510 11 GB in 5th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (62-89 .411 26 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

OAK: Cary Cornman (34-R 16-8 3.43) vs. POR: Roger Lerer (27-L 0-1 7.20)

Cornman is their #1 starter. He is 1-0 in 3 starts against us, but has a 5.29 ERA in 17 IP. We hammered him the first two times we faced him, but he escaped with no decisions. He held us to 1 R on 2 H in 8 IP last time, though, beating us.

Lerer did not make it through the 2nd inning in his first start back from the DL last time out and Oakland is 30-15 vs. lefties on the year. So, it looks like another depressing day for Lerer...

Bottom of the First:

Brian Mitchell sees three pitches he likes, swings at all three of them and goes and sits back down on the bench.... Gilberto Valdez grounds out to 2nd. Shannon Kuchta grounds out to short.

Top of the Second:

Mario Rodriguez takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Alexis Montoy grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-4. Bryan Gardner takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. P Cary Cornman lays down a bunt and P Roger Lerer fields it and fires to 3rd, but Montoy is already at the bag and the bases are loaded with 1 out... Don Neumann doubles over the center fielder's head and Mexicano scores and Neumann ends up on 3rd! 3 to 2, Oaks. Dave Risinger flies out to left and Neumann holds. Bottom of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Dave Risinger reaches on a 2 base throwing error by 3B Bryan Gardner and then steals 3rd. Marcell Amici lines a hit to right and Risinger scores! 4 to 3, Beavers! PH Tommy Thomas (30-L) grounds into a 6-4-3 double play.

Top of the Sixth:
On the Hill: Jeff Gleason (24-R), beginning his 2nd inning of work after a perfect 5th. With 1 out, John Trent doubles to left. Javy Puente strikes out! Bobbie Duvall grounds a hit to right and Trent scores... Tie Game: 4 to 4. Al Burrell pops out to 1st.

Shannon Kuchta swings at a 3-0 pitch, which is something you should never do when Glenn Snowden follows you in the lineup, and flies out to deep left....

Bottom of the Eighth:

Glenn Snowden leads off with a double down the left field line. They walk Fernando Mexicano, a lefty, intentionally to face the switch-hitting Don Neumann, who hits better from the right side. Neumann lines a hit to left and the bases are loaded with no outs. Can we please get some runs THIS time? Dave Risinger grounds into a force at home, 5-2... Marcell Amici flies out to center... We let P David Fuentes bat so he can give up runs int he 9th.... He grounds out to 2nd... No, we cannot get any runs this time...
