Joe Mauer and the Quest for .500 (or .400, as it will eventually become)

Mauer is about to reach 80 at bats with (at least) 35 hits. The guy has been absolutely on fire. He has 10 homeruns (his career high is 13 in 600 AB) which puts him just a couple behind Morneau (who has played in every game this year).

The biggest question will be whether or not Mauer reaches enough plate appearances to qualify. He missed the entire month of April and will need like 100 PA over the rest of the year.

So knock on wood, but here's to Joe Mauer and .500!!

He will get enough AB's as long as he doesnt get hurt again. 45 games after tonight X 3.1 = 139.5 and after tonight assuming 4 plate appearences he will be at 99

That home run he hit tonight was crushed. Dude is a stud.

Russ 05-24-2009 09:48 PM

Morneau is a pimp too by the way.

He needs 502 PA, if I remember correctly. He's had about 100 PAs so far. Which means he'll need about 400 PA over the next 4 months. That averages to be 100 PA per month. That isn't a lot, but he can't miss too many games.

Upper deck right field. About ten rows from the back wall.

bull**** 10 rows from the back row. no way. that's like a monster blast. hardly even a homerun...thats like an eruptal explosion of a boom-bang blam

Them two are fun to watch. Two of the 3 best players in baseball the way they are playing right now. I didnt expect this power display from Mauer this year.

Russ 05-25-2009 12:28 AM

For real. It was like 10 rows.

Roids

Jonzard 05-25-2009 02:40 AM

Naw, they only get on those when they leave Minnesota

Yeah, Mauer doesnt need to take roids. He has been a pure hitter since birth. It was just a matter of time before he started hitting for power with a swing and eye like he has.

Lets just say if he was taking roids it would be the most stunning news Id ever heard.

My post was a joke, but really? We are talking about a guy who already has, possibly chronic, knee issues. His power numbers have been somewhat disappointing in two consecutive seasons after putting up a .507 SLG in '06 and is coming off some type of odd injury. I mean, there is a decent chance that he has been on legal steroids for the last few months. To be shocked if you found out he is on some type of illegal steroid would just be naive at this point. Alex Rodriguez and Manny Ramirez were called "pure hitters" as well.

Well in todays game anything is possible and I kind of figured you were kidding that is why I didnt quote your comment.

Mauer is one of the most level headed players I have ever seen and his maturity is off the charts. He was born in the St Paul area and is loved in Minnesota. The kid has had so much pressure on him since he arrived and yet nothing has seemed to phase him. Ive never seen or heard anything negative that he has done so it would be stunning to me. He is far from the pompous ass that he could have been growing up a 2 sport stud.(offered a scholarship to play QB at FSU)

MorseMoose 05-25-2009 10:32 AM

Finally got to see it. It was 10 rows from the curtain :p. But my goodness...Crede's was a blast, Morneau's was a blast and Mauer's was a blast.

I'm not saying steroids, but could the Metrodome being doing something different with their air conditioning? I mean...wow. I haven't seen the Twins hit balls like that ever. They're in 5th for HRs this year - tied with the RED SOX!

Alright...I checked.
.033 HRs per at bat at the Metrodome
.032 HRs per at bat away

.16 RBIs per at bat at the Dome
.12 RBIs per at bat away

I think you mean nothing has seemed to faze him. ;)

I suppose if I asked to wait until July or August to talk about this I would be a killjoy. I'm more in the camp of 'let's see if he can string together 300 ABs without a DL visit before we start talking about hitting .400'.
