Dropping players before a player option?

Hey All,

I just started a standard Red Sox franchise in challenge mode and no matter what I do, I just can't seem to offload Rusney Castillo's terrible contract. He has a player option in year 2, and I'm considering releasing him before then, but if I do I'm wondering what happens with his option year? Am I still on the hook for that last year, or does releasing him before the break point nullify the remaining balance?

Any other tips on offloading bad contracts would be much appreciated since Hanley's deal is next on my chopping list.

Thanks in advance!

In real life, option years frequently have a buyout amount. So the club pays the buyout amount (which is some percentage of the salary of the option year) and the player becomes a free agent.

Not sure what OOTP does, however.

If you try and release him you should be presented with a message about the consequences. I think you would be responsible for the entire amount of his player option. And you, of course, can then cancel that to avoid actually releasing him.

If I were a player, I would expect that (given it's supposed to be "my" option to execute the deal when that time comes).

If you release him you pay the Player option year(s). It is his option no your's. For a Team option you would pay the buyout amount.
