Historical WAR values changing
 

Every Sunday, I download the stats of my league for some analysis via Sortable Stats -> Write Report to Disk, then copy/pasting into Excel. I've noticed that the WAR values I download differ from what I see in each player's historical stats after the season ticks over.

Take Lorenzo Cain for example:

The first image shows his WAR as I downloaded it at the end of each season-in the 2-3 WAR range. The second shows his WAR as it appears in my historical data, 4-5.

In fact, in the time it took me to get on a conference call and write this post (2 simulation cycles), his WAR for the 2024 and 2025 seasons has changed:

Are there issues with how WAR is calculated for historical seasons?

This is a known issue. WAR itself is not stored between seasons - only the components that go into it get stored. However, we don't store certain league values when you move to a new season, so we simply sub in the current league in its place.

Generally speaking, it should only vary by a very small amount mostly due to rounding off the league averages, but can jump more if you changed league tiers or move to a new league where the league stats are significantly different than the previous year.
