I am curious if everyone automatically takes the GM position of their favorite team or tries to see what life is like in a smaller market or bigger market team? I always play as the Braves GM, but may see just how difficult it is to be the GM for Tampa Bay.

Not quite any of those 2 choices :)


I play one save in a fictional universe with 4 leagues with promotion and relegation.


I also play as Manager only for the Montreal Expos in 1991. I play out every game.


The Expos were my favorite team, but I only manage.


If you want an added challenge while still using your favorite team, I'd recommend trying Manager only. It's a whole different game when you can only play the players given to you.

I've done a couple Oakland and Minnesota dynasties over the years, but yes, 99.9% of the time I stick to the Cardinals(or, in the case of fictional leagues, whatever team I put in St. Louis).

One thing I have wanted to try, though, is a historical Rockies dynasty where I try to do a better job of building a team suited to playing at altitude than the real-world Rox did(not counting the Blake Street Bombers teams of the mid-90s).

Oh goodness, I've been doing manager only mode with the first MLB team that gave me a shot (present day Detroit Tigers) and we're not doing well at all. I would love to exchange one of my bench players for almost anyone else in the minor leagues right now since he's both a low work ethic & high greed player but is also hitting below .200 right now and has 7 errors in 30 games at 3rd base (.896 fielding). Oh and he expects to be in the starting lineup every day :lol:

Small rant aside, I've never been closer to my players than I am right now by playing manager only mode. Even if these aren't the players that I would choose, I'm enjoying the improbable successes of Luis Tererro and Jarrod Dyson's 20 game hitting streak. We might be 24.5 games out heading into mid-August but this is the most fun losing I've ever had.

Lately I've been doing an alternate-history MLB starting with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1901. I'll probably bounce around naturally until the Twins come up in '61 and then I'll take control of them...maybe get a few more rings.

Tell me about it...in 1991 my GM got fleeced big time. That didn't upset me at all because things like that happen but oh man did the challenge factor increase tenfold lol.


He traded a 24 year old Larry Walker (4 and a half stars) who was tops of the NL in batting avg at .370 at the time of the trade (all star break) and he was really clutch. So he sent Walker, Barry Jones and $220 000 to the Cubs for....Russ McGinnis.


Only other non injury related move he did was signing Gerald Perry who was released earlier in the year, and sent Andres Galarraga down to make room for him. Galarraga was hitting like .175 so I can understand the move.



Fun times.

I always start a new game, or a new manager in a continuing game, unemployed. I choose among whatever minor league or international league or indy league jobs I'm offered and try to work my way up the the majors. Both as manager and GM although not always together. In my current game I am the manager (but not GM) of the Cleveland Indians in 1952.We're 4 games behind the Yankees despite injuries. If a GM job becomes available to me I might take it.

I never thought about manager and that seems like it would be frustrating! I now have some ideas as I never thought about historical and the fictional would give some new twists to the GM game.

If I really hate myself, I could always rank the top five, terrible owners, and start teams with them. Pittsburgh anyone?

Manager is not for everyone, it's not easy to relinquish control.


Playing fictional would probably add a challenge in the sense that you don't have the familiarity. You have to trust your scouts and/or your instincts a lot more because you don't have the same feeling of security as you can have when you know what you're getting with Freddie Freeman for example.

I've always preferred fictional. I had a fictional league running for over 90 seasons spanning OOTP 14 to 19. I may pick it back up one day. I either manager or GM'ed a team in that game for 70 some odd of those 90 seasons and won a dozen or so championships (the coveted Doubleday Cup) over those seasons.But it did get stale after a while. I started a historical game a few months back and I'm enjoying it for the most part. Haven't been a GM yet. Looking forward to that.

I still think I prefer fictional though. BECAUSE as eldur00 said you don't have the familiarity. Larry Doby is by far the worst hitter on my team. In '52 he had a great season. Stuff like that, and seeing Mickey Mantle playing for the St Louis Browns is a little annoying. But that is exactly what the game is SUPPOSED to be doing.

That's a good point.

I always play GM+manager, usually in small market teams or teams that have money but lack direction like the Mets or Mariners. I did however run a save of my Orioles, they're pretty easy, the farm system has a lot of gems in the upper minors.
