2019 DETROIT TIGERS Thread
I realize that it's going to be a tough year but does anyone have an explanation as to why they have a 21 year veteran of the minors, mexican and Indy leagues that had a cup of coffee with LA back in 2010 and hasn't played in two years on the roster?
This dude https://www.baseball-reference.com/p...indsjo01.shtml I just saw him listed on the roster page at ESPN - hopefully it is just an error! :crying: |
Like the move to sign Josh Harrison on a one year deal. If he has some success you can flip him and if he doesn't you are not on a long term hook.
|
Are any of you stunned that Jose Iglesius remains unsigned? Wonder why?

Maybe a clerical error. Maybe they signed his kid? :p |
Candelario hits into that 3-6-3 double play that my Raccoons always hit into that I had yet to see in real action.
|
|
Very pleased with Harrison at second.
Now, if they can just manage to hold everyone scoreless, this could be a great year! |
Great first inning for Boyd!
First pitch fastball was knocked off the wall for a triple and then he struck out the side with fantastic control. |
Boyd pitched well. That four run inning wasn't all his fault. An unfortunate slow rolloer to load the bases and Mahtook butchered a short single to clear the bases.
New SS looks pretty sharp. Unlikely to make me forget about Jose but he'll do I suppose. |
Miggy took a pitch to his right hand - ugh
Turnbull was good until he wasn't (I sense a pattern starting). Alcantara looks like he could be a bright spot in the pen - maybe. Score some runs man. Not much to look at outside of Miggy and Castellanos these last two games. Although I am hopeful about what Candelario and Stewart could do. Harrison and Goodrum may be decent contributors too. |
Moore looks good today. Really, starting pitchng has been better than I would have expected thus far.
Edit: At last! plated a few runs! Hold on boys. |
... and the bullpen is in mid season form
|
whew. Shane Greene is not very closer-like but 2-2 is 2-2!

I think so. I know he gets hit too but I'd almost rather have Jiminez close. His fastball moves pretty well and he can over power batters at times. But what do I know. |
Up 3-1 in the ninth! I am stuck listening to my least favorite broadcast team (waldman & sterling) because my MLB.tv Tigers game is blacked out due to proximity to the evil empire.
Last night, I had to listen to Waldman blathering about what a great opportunity this series is for the Yankees young pitchers because 'Detroit is still a major league lineup, they can still challenge you but what a great chance for success for the young guys' :-) loving the game tonight! |
It's way too early but I'm used to the starting pitching already being a disaster by now. Feeling pretty good!
Fifth save for Greene - dude is not a closer. He will burn us and bad. (have to keep the standard Detroit pessimist flame going) |

I'll settle for a team that plays hard and keeps improving. It is very nice to see the team off to such a good start. Crazier things have happened.
|
Goodrum is becoming my favorite Tiger though the position is still somewhat open.

They can always find another donkelly. :-)
Nice victory again today but loosing Moore for a bit will be costly. |
These boys are fun to follow right now.
|
Playing like that they sure are. Good starting job today, great defense, Hicks gunning out two (including Hamilton!).
I wonder how long Moore will be out with that knee. |
Pitching and defense will win you a lot of games. As for Moore, the guy on the radio was saying that per Gardenhire they can go two routes, surgery or possible rehab. The surgery route is looking like 6 to 8 weeks while if it can be rehabbed about 2 to 3 weeks. I hope it can be rehabbed because he has shown something thought the spring and his first 2 starts. I don't trust Norris at all. They keep shoving him out there though. Can't say the team hasn't given him every opportunity to succeed.
|
Facing Kluber today - we'll get a glimpse of what they really have. At best, I think all we can hope for this season is flashes of what's to come from this team. Always hopeful for more though!
|
Welp. That's why there are 162 of these things.
|
Grainer showed a little arm today though.
|
Boyd, Goodrum, the non-closer - wow!
|
17 LOB over two games with the Twinkies - not good.
Stewart doubled in a run late and had a great AB in the ninth to work a walk to load the bases. Really going to enjoy watching him develop. |

Their poor offense bites them when their pitching isn't stellar.
|
Word today is that Moore is done for the season. ugh

The bats are in gear but oh those errors! sigh, come on boys.
|
Hit 72 homeruns and still lose! Go bullpen.
|
Miggy may be old...

...but I'd still rather have a guy that's old and willing to give it all than a young whiner who doesn't hustle on defense.
|
I think the pitching has been a pleasant surprise overall so far. The defense has not been bad either considering injuries and the bouncing around from spot to spot that many are doing. The thing that kills me is all the strikeouts. How many games have they had 10+ K's? You are not going to be successful if over 1/3 of your outs you don't even get the ball in play. I'm not sure Jones is ever going to be a major league player.
|
It has been amusing watching the guy that handles their facebook account struggle to say something upbeat after a loss. It has to be a tough job but I think he or she has thrown in the towel. The last two post game posts were "We did not win today's game' and "Today wasn't our day." :-)
Glad that Stewart is back in the lineup, I enjoy watching him. Hope he pans out to be a consistant contributor at this level. |
Pulled a guy up from AA to start the second game today (Soto). He only has 13 innings at AA level at that. Brutal.
|
As a Twins fan, curious what you think of your coaches
|
I am really not able to comment on the coaching staff. I have always liked Gardenhire and the players seem to like him. He's fine. They are rebuilding; lots of young players. So I am expecting nothing from the year other than getting to know these players better.
Their first round pick Mize has been lights out since moving up to AA including a no-hitter |
Casey Mize so far is looking to be as advertised. 45 innings between high A and AA with 3 ER, 40 K, and 3 BB. Not too shabby!

Maybe it's time to start using position players on the mound. This whole pitcher thing isn't working very well.
|
Losing nine in a row at home is generally not a good thing or so I am told.
|
3 of the starting pitchers are looking impressive so far and 2 or 3 guys out of the bullpen. The rest of the pitching staff is in shambles. Of course, the pitching is getting no help from the lineup as they are still struggling to produce runs. Jones is actually above 200 now. Would love to be proved wrong on him. I bet management is almost relieved to have some of these unproductive veterans on the IL. If you're going to lose, at least lose with youth that may get better.
|
Casey Mize now has a 1.40 ERA in AA. He must have been 'roughed up' since that no hitter. 6-0 with a .572 WHIP for all of 2019 to date. 60K in 64.2 innings.
|
Mize had another game: 6inn 6H 2W 5K
On season: 7-0 0.89ERA 70.2IP 65K 0.637 WHIP |
