Hollywood Stars (73-68 .518 23.5 GB in 3rd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (96-44 .686 18.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

HOL: Steve Gonzalez (34-R 4-8 6.89) vs. POR: John Krawczyk (25-L 7-6 2.49) Rookie

Gonzalez, an ex-Beaver, is pitching for his 3rd team this season, being claimed off waivers each time. He has lost his last 4 starts and has not made it through 5 innings in any of them. We have not faced him since 2002, when he was 1-1 in 4 starts against us playing for Sacramento. He is pitching with a strained back. If this guy shuts us down, I will have a hissy fit...

Krawczyk has lost his last 2 starts, but we did not score any runs at all in either one.

Attendance: 24,742

Top of the First:
Fred Rambo hits the first bloops double I have ever seen... It was a little pop up over the 3rd baseman's head that he could not quite run down... Jorge Govantes, the .119 hitter, hits one to the warning track in center and Rambo tags up and trots over to 3rd. Gus McCollum swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd and Rambo scores. 1 to 0, Stars. Jose Naranjo grounds a triple over the 1st base bag... Larry Church grounds out to 1st, unassisted!

Bottom of the First:

A.J. Lee squibs one and is out, 2-3... Jerry Suazo lines out to right. Enrique Ramos strikes out... This is the fourth start for Gonzalez since joining the Stars and that is his 2nd strikeout for Hollywood.... Here we go again...

Bottom of the Second:
Glenn Snowden leads off with a double to right. His third hit of September in only 10 games! With 1 out, Denny Peters grounds a hit to right and Snowden heads home......Safe! Tie Game: 1 to 1. Kim Springer walks on 4 pitches. With 2 outs, P John Krawczyk lines one to 1st, but it hits off the heel of Dale Grimwood's glove for an error and the bases are loaded. A.J. Lee clears the bases with a double to left and ends up on 3rd!!! 4 to 1, Beavers! Runs!

Top of the Fifth:

Jorge Govantes, the .119 hitter, pops one up behind 2nd, and no one takes charge and he has his 2nd hit of the game... The first was a double. A wild pitch sends him to 2nd... The Bullpen is up. Gus McCollum doubles to left center and Govantes scores. 4 to 2, Beavers. Jose Naranjo grounds a hit to center... He steals 2nd. Larry Church strikes out looking! Dale Grimwood swings at the first pitch and lines out to 1st! Mark Coronato, the .210 hitter, grounds his second hit of the game up the middle and both runners score.... Tie Game: 4 to 4.

Bottom of the Fifth:
PH Tim Higbee (21-S) grounds out to 2nd. A.J. Lee doubles to right center. He steals 3rd. Jerry Suazo draws a walk. Enrique Ramos flies out to right and Lee tags up and scores without a throw. 5 to 4, Beavers. That does it for P Steve Gonzalez. New Pitcher: Tom Auerbach (25-R). He was released by Sacramento on July 23 and signed by Hollywood on August 19. He has a 6.23 ERA in 13 IP. Ramon Arguedas (28-R) is in to play short in a double switch. Auerbach beans Glenn Snowden... Jeff Galka lines a hit to center and Suazo scores without a throw! 6 to 4, Beavers!

Bottom of the Seventh:

A.J. Lee and Jerry Suazo lead off with back to back hits. Enrique Ramos lines a hit to left and the bases are loaded with no outs. Can Glenn Snowden get 2 hits in one game? Not this time.... He lines out to center and Lee tags up and scores. 7 to 4, Beavers. Jeff Galka grounds into his 20th double play of the season, 6-4-3...

Won - 8 to 4

We had 10 hits and made 1 error
Hollywood had 10 hits and made 1 error

John Krawczyk (W 8-6) went 5 innings, allowed 4 runs, 10 hits, no walks and struck out 4. He threw a WP. At bat, he scored a run. It is nice to see him get a win he did not serve after the losses he took that he did not deserve.
RHP Leonardo Sanchez (H 9) went 3 scoreless innings, allowed 1 walk and struck out 4.
RHP Ramon Andrade pitched a perfect 9th with 2 strikeouts.

Steve Gonzalez (L 4-9) went 4.2 innings, gave us 6 runs (3 earned), 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. 6 runs allowed on 6 base runners is tough.

2B A.J. Lee had 3 hits with 2 doubles, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBI. CF Jerry Suazo had a hit and a walk and scored a run. 1B Glenn Snowden hit a double, was hit by a pitch, scored a run and had an RBI, his 1st in a week. We put A.J. Lee on the Disabled List and called up OF Larry Ballard (25-L). We wanted to call up 1B Oscar Trejo (31-R), but he is hurt.

The San Diego Padres are in town to play a 3 game series over the weekend. They just won 2 of 3 at home versus Sacramento. After a bad July and a miserable August that saw them fall out of contention, they have righted their ship in September and are 12-2. We are 7-4 against them on the season and split a pair of games the last time they were here, August 30-31. They are 6th in scoring in the PCL with 4.24 runs per game (Portland is #3 with 4.59). They lead the PCL with 152 SB and we are last with 49. They have one player with 46. The Padres are also 6th in fewest runs allowed with 3.87 per game (Portland is #1, but getting higher, at 3.16). Our dream of finishing with under 3 runs allowed per game is looking like a long shot. Their run differential is +54 and ours is +208.

San Diego Padres (82-64 .562 18 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (100-46 .685 18 GA Champions of the PCL West)

SD: Bobby Wolfe (27-R 7-11 5.03) vs. POR: Frank Flores (25-R 18-7 2.98) All-Star/PCLCS MVP

Wolfe allowed 1 run in 6.1 IP last time out for a win. He is 2-0 in 3 starts against us this season, which is frankly embarrassing. He held us to 4 hits and no runs in 7.1 IP he last time we faced him.

Flores gave up 5 runs (3 earned) and 8 hits in 5 IP last time out, but escaped with a no decision.
