We are back home to play the Los Angeles Angels a 3 game series. They won 2 of 3 at home from Hollywood over the weekend and have won 5 of their last 6 games. We are 4-3 against them on the season and this is their 1st trip to Portland. They are 8th in scoring in the PCL with 4.14 runs per game (Portland is still #4 with 4.46). The Angels are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.06 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.01). I do not think it is possible for us to not end up as #1 for the season in fewest runs allowed, since we are so far ahead of #2 Kansas City. Of course, it is possible, but it would seem to be extremely unlikely. The Angels' run differential is +9 and ours is +179.

Los Angeles Angels (64-60 .516 21.5 GB in 3rd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (85-38 .691 19 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

LA: Bill Wertz (33-R 13-9 2.70) 3-time All-Star(01-03) vs. POR: Barry Phillips (21-R 15-3 1.98) All-Star/Gold Glove

Wertz is their #1 starter and the 2nd highest paid pitcher in the game ($2.64 million). He gave up 3 runs on 6 hits and no walks in 7 IP last time out in a no decision. He is 1-0 in 2 starts against us this year. We did not score against him in the win in 7.2 IP and got 4 runs in 7 IP in the no decision.

Phillips allowed 3 runs and 9 hits in 5.1 IP last time out, but had a no decision. He is currently 2nd in the PCL in ERA.

OF's Larry Ballard (25-L) and Greg Unser (28-R) were sent back to Vancouver (A) and IF Juan Rojas (25-S) and rookie 3B Brent Edwards (23-R) were called up. Edwards was our 3rd round pick in last year's B leagues Draft.

I don't want to jinx us, but I don't think I can... We have 34 games left to play and I think we could lose every single one of them and still have a a good shot at winning the division! The Padres would have to go 21-12 to catch us and they are not playing anywhere near that clip of late. They are 14-27 since the All-Star break.

Riley is their #1 starter. He has not pitched in over a month and has not taken any rehab time. He has not won a game since June 25. We have not faced him this season. He was 1-1 against us last year, with 1 good game and one not so good.

Johnson is taking his 1st shot at becoming the 1st 18 game winner in the Majors. He gave up 3 runs on 4 hits in 7 IP last time out to get a win.

Attendance: 27,385

Top of the First:
Dick Berube grounds out to 1st, 3-1. Dave Bafaro lines a hit to right. Bill Lunsford doubles to left center and Bafaro scores... 1 to 0, Padres. I do not want are all-time winning streak to end up being 13 games... Very unlucky to have that in the record books... A wild pitch sends Lunsford to 3rd... Brian Mosca squibs one and is out, 2-3. and Lunsford holds at 3rd! Buddy Potts lines a hit to right and Lunsford scores.. 2 to 0, Padres. Del Hall swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses.

Bottom of the First:

A.J. Lee pops out to center. Jerry Suazo draws a walk. Enrique Ramos doubles to left center! Glenn Snowden pops out to left and Suazo holds at 3rd... Tim Higbee flies out to center... Phooey...

Bottom of the Second:
Jeff Galka lines a hit to left center. Kim Springer hits a home run to right!! Tie Game: 2 to 2.

Top of the Third:

With 1 out, Dave Bafaro squibs one, but C Tim Higbee cannot find the handle and Bafaro reaches on the error. With Bafaro on the move, Bill Lunsford swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to right and Bafaro easily makes it to 3rd... Brian Mosca gets beaned to load the bases up with 1 out... Buddy Potts walks on 4 pitches to force in a run... 3 to 2, Padres. The Bullpen is up. Del Hall swings at a 3-2 pitch and pops out to center and the runners hold. 2 outs. Dick Singer gets beaned to force in a run... 4 to 2, Padres. Call to the Bullpen: Steve Stewart (25-L). Rick Tyson grounds out to short.

Top of the Fourth:
P Steve Stewart strikes out the side in order, including Dave Bafaro, who has only struck out 31 times all season!

And P John Riley has found his sea legs... After giving up the home run to Kim Springer, he has retired 12 in a row...

Bottom of the Sixth:
Jerry Suazo and Enrique Ramos lead off with back to back hits and we have runners at the corners with no outs. Glenn Snowden hits a home run to center!!! 5 to 4, Beavers! That does it for P John Riley. New Pitcher: Jose Rodriguez (24-R), with a 3.99 ERA in 49.2 IP with 53 SO. The next three make outs...

Top of the Seventh:
On the Hill: Denny Jennissen (30-R), after a scoreless 6th. Bill Lunsford grounds a hit to center. The Bullpen is up. Brian Mosca grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Buddy Potts lines a hit to right center and Lunsford beats the throw to 3rd... Call to the Bullpen: Rich Larkin (25-R). Dave Risinger is into play 2nd in a double switch. A.J. Lee moves to 3rd. Del Hall pops out to short! Dick Singer grounds a hit to center and Lunsford scores... Tie Game: 5 to 5. Rick Tyson lines one hard to left, but right at Kim Springer!

Top of the Ninth:

3-4-5 up for them... Bill Lunsford strikes out on 3 pitches! Brian Mosca grounds out to short! Buddy Potts, 2 for 2 with 2 walks today, grounds out to 1st, 3-1! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Chris Beltran (35-R), their closer with a 2.32 ERA in 62 IP with only 3 HR and 11 BB and 52 SO. PH Leon Davis (22-R) grounds out to 3rd. Kim Springer grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Denny Peters swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to center. Dave Risinger strikes out looking...

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Leonardo Sanchez (25-R). With 2 outs, Rick Tyson lines a hit to left. PH Keith Finkbiner (24-L), a rookie batting .315 with 1 HR in 73 AB, is sent up. Tyson steals 2nd... Finkbiner grounds out to 2nd!

Bottom of the Tenth:

New Pitcher: Jackie Cole (24-L), with a 2.00 ERA. With 1 out, Jerry Suazo lines a hit to left and Dave Bafaro, a Gold Glover, overruns the ball for an error and Suazo makes it to 2nd! Enrique Ramos does not hit lefties very well, but I cannot get stuck with one of the rookies being in there to bat against righties later on, because they utterly suck against righties (and they ain't so ggod against lefties, either). So Ramos hits. And hits, he does! He swings at the first pitch and hits a home run to right and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!

Won - 7 to 5

14 wins in a row!
Now, we can safely end the streak without jinxing ourselves for all eternity...
Not that we have to end the streak, mind you...

We had 9 hits and made 1 error

San Diego Padres (69-62 .527 23.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (92-38 .708 23.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

SD: Bobby Wolfe (27-R 5-11 5.30) vs. POR: John Krawczyk (25-L 7-4 2.20) Rookie

Wolfe has lost his last 3 starts, but pitched well in the last one, allowing 2 runs and 5 hits in 6 IP. He is 1-0 in 2 starts against us this year, pitching well in the win, but we whooped up on him pretty good in the no decision.

Krawczyk pitched 3 scoreless innings in his last start, but got hurt hitting a double. He now has a string of 10 straight starts without allowing more than 2 runs, although he is only 4-3 during those games. We may have to trade him just to make sure none of his unluckiness rubs off on anyone else....

That has to be an unlucky thing for the attendance to be even like that....

Top of the First:
Dick Berube fouls out to the catcher. Dave Bafaro grounds a hit to center. Bill Lunsford grounds a hit to center and Bafaro goes to 3rd. Brian Mosca flies out to deep left and Bafaro trots home. 1 to 0, Padres. Buddy Potts grounds out to 2nd.

A wild pitch scores Lunsford.... 3 to 0, Padres. With a 3-2 count on Del Hall, we decide to walk him intentionally.... That is the stupidest thing ever... P Bobby Wolfe strikes out looking. Dick Berube grounds out to 3rd.

Lost - 3 to 0

Getting shutout at home by a pitcher with a 5+ ERA is not how I thought the streak would end...
14 wins in a row is now in the record books for something to shoot at.

We had 5 whole hits (all singles) and made 2 errors
San Diego had 8 hits (all singles) and made no errors

John Krawczyk (L 7-5) went 5.1 innings, allowed 3 runs, 7 hits, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 3.
RHP Jon Weekley went 2.2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit, 3 walks (1 INT) and struck out 4. He threw a WP.
RHP Ramon Andrade went 1 perfect inning and struck out 1.

Bobby Wolfe (W 6-11) went 7.1 scoreless innings, gave us 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. He threw a WP. 112 pitches. He becomes the 1st pitcher this season to win a 2nd game against us...

We are back on the road for 8 days and are in Denver to play the Bears a 4 game series. They just lost a pair of games in Kansas City. We won 3 of 4 games from them in Portland, June 24-27. They lead the PCL in scoring with 5.45 runs per game (Portland is #3 with 4.60). Don't assume that most of their prowess is given to them by Mile High Stadium; they lead the League in runs scored on the road, too. They lead the PCL with 159 HR in 131 games. We are 3rd with 118. The Bears are 16th (last) in fewest runs allowed with 4.71 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.05). At home they have allowed 5.34 and 4.09 on the road. Their run differential is +97 and ours is +203.

Portland Beavers (92-39 .702 22.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Denver Bears (72-59 .550 9.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East)

POR: Frank Flores (25-R 16-7 2.87) All-Star/PCLCS MVP vs. DEN: Norm Ginsburg (26-R 10-6 4.81)

Flores won his last start with 3 runs and 6 hits allowed in 8 IP.

Ginsburg pitched a 5 hit shutout at San Antonio in his last start. We beat him in Portland, but only scored 2 runs in 7.2 innings.

We are in Milwaukee to play the Brewers a 4 game series. They were swept in 4 games over the weekend at San Diego. We swept them in 4 games at Portland, May 27-30. They are 4th in the PCL in scoring with 4.49 runs per game (Portland is #3 with 4.61). They are 2nd in the League with 130 HR and we are 3rd with 122. The Brewers are 14th in fewest runs allowed with 4.54 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.03). Their run differential is -7 and ours is +213.

Portland Beavers (95-40 .704 21.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Milwaukee Brewers (66-70 .485 19 GB in 5th place in the PCL East)

POR: John Krawczyk (25-L 7-5 2.33) Rookie vs. MIL: Vic Kyzer (25-L 17-9 3.43)

Krawczyk gave up 3 runs in 5.1 IP last time out and took a loss as we were shut out for the 3rd time with Krawczyk on the hill. He gets no love from our offense at all.

Kyzer, the ex-Beaver, who still makes me cry thinking about what could have been, gave up 1 run in 6 IP with 9 SO for a win last time out. He leads the PCL in strikeouts with 180 in 202 IP. We faced him in Portland and hammered him, scoring 8 runs (7 earned) and he only got 1 batter out, though it was a strikeout.
