Yesterday was 3B Melvin Rodarte's 32nd birthday.

The San Diego Padres are here to finish up our home stand with a 2 game set. They won 3 of 4 in Los Angeles over the weekend and 5 of their last 6. We lost 2 of 3 to them in San Diego, April 13-15. They are 15th in the PCL in scoring with 3.52 runs per game (Portland is 16th (last) with 3.50). They are 5th in fewest runs allowed with 4.12 per game (Portland is #3 with 3.63). For April, the PCL scored a lot more runs than the NL. The PCL averaged 4.45 runs per game while the NL only averaged 3.79. Together they averaged 4.13, which is close to normal.

San Diego Padres (9-16 .360 6.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (12-12 .500 3 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

SD: Gordy Albrecht (24-R 1-4 5.67) Rookie vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (22-R 2-2 1.66) Rookie

Albrecht held us to 2 runs and 2 hits and a walk in 6 IP when we faced him in San Diego. He got his only win of the season so far.

Johnson only gave up 1 run in 7 IP at San Diego on April 14, but that was not good enough to get a win.

Bottom of the Fifth:

With 1 out, Dave Risinger singles, but gets caught stealing. PH Jerry Grant (30-L) lines a hit to center. And then I think the Padres were feeling sorry for our lack of hitting ability and made back-to-back 2 base errors to give us a couple of runs and tie the game at 2 all! First, P Bobby Johnson hit a fly ball to right that Pete Reid had bounce off the heel of his glove to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Then SS Del Hall threw away a ground ball off the bat of Jack Hinckley and both runners scored!

Top of the Sixth:
Rick Potter leads off with a hit and steals 2nd. Then we walk Dave Bafaro intentionally in front of their cleanup hitter.... Insanity! A wild pitch moves the runners up, so we walk Brian Mosca, too. Now the bases are loaded with no outs and two of them were put there on purpose... Utter nonsense! Dell Hall grounds into a force at home, 3-2, for the first out. But Pete Reid lines a hit to right and two runs score... 4 to 2, Padres and the Pen is up. But the next two make outs.

Top of the Eighth:

SP Ricardo Gil was placed on the Disabled List and SP Jeff Frith (24-R) was called up from Vancouver (A). He was 2-1 with a 2.12 ERA in 7 starts for the Mounties.

We also made a trade.

Trade #12:
3B Rick Roeger (24-L) to Cincinnati for C Jim Shippy (30-R).

Roeger is a decent fielder at several positions, but not much of a hitter. He was batting .233/.278/.256 in 90 AB with 0 HR and 12 RBI and 3 SB for Vancouver (A). Shippy is nothing much, but he is probably an upgrade over Craig Petitto....probably. He hit .214/.279/.250 in 56 AB with 0 HR and 7 RBI for Cincinnati. He at least has not allowed a passed ball and Petitto already has 4.

C Marcell Amici (31-R) has been sent back to Vancouver (A).

By the way, we are now in last place...

Portland Beavers (13-18 .419 7.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Houston Astros (11-20 .355 10 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL East)

OF Bill Wilson (28-R) was put on the Disabled List and C Marcell Amici (31-R) was recalled. He went 5 for 8 with a double and a home run since being sent down. We are going to put him in the Beaver starting lineup and see what he does.

Los Angeles Angels (25-12 .676 in 1st place in the PCL West)

POR: John Cox (28-L 1-0 2.45) vs. LA: Sam Henderson (27-R 2-3 3.45)

Cox went 7.1 innings in his Beaver debut and only allowed 2 runs and got a win, but he walked 6 and only struck out 1.

We faced Henderson on Opening Day and lost, scoring only 1 run in 8 innings, though he did not get the decision. But he has fallen on hard times since then and is now only their #3 starter. He has lost 3 of his last 4 starts and had a no decision in the most recent one, but only went 1 inning and allowed 6 runs.

We are in Sacramento to finish up our two week road trip with two games in California's capital. We split a pair of games with the Solons in Portland, April 24-25. They were swept in 3 games here by San Francisco over the weekend and have lost 6 of their last 7. They are 13th in scoring in the PCL with 4.18 runs per game (Portland is still last with 3.59). That 4.18 per game average would put the Solons 6th in the NL, where the ERA is only 3.44 so far this year. The PCL league ERA is 4.09. They are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 4.50 per game (Portland is 6th with 4.22).

Portland Beavers (15-22 .405 10 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Sacramento Solons (20-18 .526 5.5 GB in 3rd place in the PCL West)

POR: Steve Muir (26-R 2-3 4.18) vs. SAC: Juan Sanchez (26-R 3-4 6.35)

Muir had a good outing last time out with 2 runs allowed in 7.1 IP, after getting shelled twice in a row, but he nonetheless lost his 3rd straight start.

We scored 5 runs in 5 innings off Sanchez in Portland and beat him.
