I want to create a team of young players whose careers were cut short by injury, death or just plain bad luck. I know how to import the players, but how do I make it so their career paths don't just follow their same sad ending?

Generally, the moment you import a player into OOTP, you are starting them down the path of an "alternate universe." There is no coding in the system that will make certain players end their careers in the same way they did in real life. So, you should have no problem achieving your goal!
