Kevin Rhomberg 1982
2 Attachment(s)
One of our personal White Whales beached itself on eBay on Valentine's Day. Kevin Rhomberg, who played parts of three seasons with the Cleveland Indians but was missing in action for many folks, made his Vault debut. There has been some very low res color of Rhomberg around, but the man who went on to went on to become head baseball coach at Cleveland State University in the 90s never had so much as a Rookie Stars card despite hitting .383 (18-for-47) in his three cups of coffee 1982-84.
Rod Carew once called him "that crazy kid in Cleveland" and Men's Fitness magazine once named him one of the 10 most superstitious athletes in sports due to his "touch me, touch you" compulsion. A legit hitter, Rhomberg once hit .372 in the Class AA Southern League. Attachment 673208 Attachment 673209 |

Carl Sumner 1928 - ID error above

After reviewing the picture of Sumner above, that photo actually pictures Tris Speaker, with the 1913 Red Sox. The source image can be seen in the Harris & Ewing Collection at the Library of Congress.
Below is an actual photo of Sumner with the 1928 Red Sox. rrb, could you please repost your Red Sox wantlist? I and others may be able to help whittle it down a bit. |
Believe it or not, I currently don't have a list made up.

Red Sox Needs
In the absence of rrb77's current Red Sox needs list, I offer this as a first installment test run of my own list - I'm certain rrb77 is farther along than I.
These are the men who's images I need in Red Sox unis who made their debuts between 1901 and 1910: 1901 JONES, Charlie 1901 SLATTERY, Jack 1902 HICKMAN, Charlie 1902 WILSON, Gary 1904 O'NEILL, Bill 1905 BURKETT, Jesse 1905 GODWIN, John (if anything better than the 2009 posting on this site has surfaced) 1906 CHADBOURNE, Chet 1906 GRAHAM, Charles 1907 CONGALTON, Bunk 1907 KNIGHT, John 1908 CARLISLE, Walter 1908 LAPORTE, Frank 1908 MCFARLAND, Ed 1908 OSTDIEK, Harry 1909 DANZIG, Babe 1909 HOWARD, Paul 1910 HEARNE, Ed (need better than the BR image - it's almost unintelligible 1910 KLEINOW, Red (need something other than the Gold Border tobacco card image) 1910 MOSKIMAN, Doc 1910 MYERS, Hap 1910 POND, Ralph |
Jud Smith 1893

The previous entry actually depicts Brownie Foreman, who pitched for the Pirates early in 1896.
I have attached a confirmed image of Smith when he was a member of the 1897 Syracuse team. |

Though not an ideal pose, this image features Burkett in 1905 with Boston.

John Godwin 1905

This image is from the 1906 Red Sox team composite published by Sporting Life.

Frank Laporte 1905

This is a close-up of Laporte's 1908 The Rose Company BC760 baseball card, while with the Red Sox.
P.S. A colleague has shared with me a copy of the larger photo from which this baseball card was produced, and it shows that Laporte was in a New York HIghlanders uniform. |
Hap Myers 1910

This image is from a Red Sox composite found on a 1910 Red Sox calendar published by the Boston American newspaper. This particular calendar comes from The Kashmanian Collection and it was published in a book called BASEBALL TREASURES, by Douglas Congdon-Martin and John Kashmanian in 1992.

Babe Danzig
1 Attachment(s)
A poor quality image, but it can be seen that Danzig is wearing a 1908 Red Sox uniform. The image is from Marc Okkonen's book, 2000 CUPS OF COFFEE. Given that Danzig didn't make his major league debut until 1909, I'd have to speculate that the photo was taken in spring training in 1909. After doing some brief newspaper research, it doesn't appear that he was with the Red Sox in the spring of 1908.
