Odd tryout/draft bug
 

In 2023, Connor Bedard was drafted first overall by Anaheim. They haven't signed him yet...but it appears he had a preseason tryout with Seattle (Added team in the NHL). It appears they weren't able to sign him...but how could he be in camp with Seattle when he was drated by Anaheim?

Shouldn't be possible, the tryout routine specifically excludes any players whose rights belong to another team in the same league. If you check the Contract tab of his player screen, what team does it show owning his rights?

It still said Anaheim. It was just a preseason thing and he was back on his junior team after the preseason. He did sign with Anaheim in 2024.

Strange. I'm wondering if it might be some kind of expansion oddity, maybe related to the draft. I'll do some experimenting and see if I can duplicate a scenario like that.

I add Seattle starting in 2019-2020 just to make it easy. But yes, I was following the whole Anaheim saga since they drafted number one two years in a row and got Shane Wright and Connor Bedard in consecutive years.

Also, I don't know if it's coincidence that both times it's been Seattle. But I haven't seen it with any other teams.

Hmm, nothing appears to be wrong in the player or team data, Seattle's just straight-up ignoring the restriction on not offering tryouts to players with league rights in its own league. My first guess would be that Seattle's not being recognized as part of the NHL for rights purposes, but that would manifest itself in a bunch of other ways, and I don't see into them. We'll have to dig into the save a little further, this is a weird one.
