Quick request for a 14-team balanced schedule

I need a 14-team balanced (sort of) schedule for an upcoming league of mine.

Each team plays 162 games. Because 162/14 leaves a remainder of six, these extra six games are distributed in the following way:

-12 games vs. 10 opponents (6 home, 6 away)
-13 games vs. 1 opponent (6 or 7 home, 6 or 7 away)
-14 games vs. 1 opponent (6 or 8 home, 6 or 8 away)
-15 games vs. 1 opponent (6 or 9 home, 6 or 9 away)

  • Season starts on a Friday and lasts 189 days, ending on a Thursday. (Because of the low number of four-game series, only four games are played on the last day of the season. As my league has no playoffs, there is no potential rest advantage to be gained from this.)
  • Days of the week are irrelevant, except that no teams can be off on Sundays. Keep in mind that each team has 26-27 offdays, or roughly one offday per week.
  • No All-Star break, but day 110 (a Tuesday, if I have my math right) is an offday for all teams to allow for an ASG to be played in a two-subleague configuration. All teams do play on days 109 and 111 - it's simply listed as a common offday in the .lsdl file.

I'll start looking at this today. Need to plan out the matchups for the extra games before I can start scheduling games.

I can already see an issue in the H/A set up.

You have this for team 1:

-12 games vs. 10 opponents (6 home, 6 away) 6 home games vs 10 = 60
-13 games vs. 1 opponent (6 or 7 home, 6 or 7 away) 7 home games vs 1 = 7
-14 games vs. 1 opponent (7 home, 7 away) 7 home games vs 1 = 7
-15 games vs. 1 opponent (6 or 9 home, 6 or 9 away) 6 home games vs 1 = 6

thats 80 home games, 82 road games

team 2:

-12 games vs. 10 opponents (6 home, 6 away) 10*6=60
-13 games vs. 1 opponent (6 or 7 home, 6 or 7 away) 1*6=6
-14 games vs. 1 opponent (7 home, 7 away) 1*7=7
-15 games vs. 1 opponent (6 or 9 home, 6 or 9 away) 1*9=9

=82 home games

Half your teams will play 82H and half the teams will play 80H games.

The solution is to play 12 vs. everyone, thats 156 games, plus 2 extra series. 3H/3A

Either vs one team home and away, or one team home and another team away.

so the extra series could be

1 @ 2
2 @ 1
3 @ 4
4 @ 3
etc.

or

1 @ 4
7 @ 1
4 @ 13
13 @ 7
etc

^ Or you could just make the 14-game opponents be 6H/8A instead. Then you could have

12 games vs. 10 teams (60H/60A)
13 games vs. 1 team (6H/7A or 7H/6A)
14 games vs. 1 team (6H/8A or 8H/6A)
15 games vs. 1 team (9H/6A or 6H/9A)

works out to 81/81 for everybody. Wouldn't be an issue to split up the 7/7 because you have to play two 3-game series and two 4-game series against that team either way, might as well shuffle home/away teams.

Thats a lot of work to add one more team into the mix to have a few extra games. :)

thehip41 12-10-2014 10:23 AM

I've been thinking about Ruwisc's post yesterday about having it be 9/6 6/7 6/8 or
6/9 7/6 8/6 for home/away splits

I came up with this:

So team 1-7 play teams 8-14 (1 team each) 9H/6A

Then for the other two sections, for teams 1-7 they play 6H/7A or 6H/8A against two different teams from the 8-14 group.

It appears that all the teams have 21H games in these extra series.

I will build the table of matchups today and go from there.

For this league, you have 14 teams.

Is it one league/one division

one league/two divisions of 7

Two leagues/one division of 7 in each league?

Things are going well. I have the matchups set. I have an outline of when each series will be played. Just a matter of scheduling the games and getting it into the .lsdl file.

Any comments or requests as far as game times?

bwburke94 12-13-2014 04:51 AM

Game times are 25% 13:05, 5% 16:05, 65% 19:05, 5% 20:05.

I support Ruwisc's idea of changing the 7/7 to a 6/8 to balance home games.

Want to give you an update. I have the schedule completely created now. I just need to transfer this to an excel sheet and do RNG to set the times.

It should be done tonight or tomorrow night.

Made some fixes to get the thing to import properly.

thehip41 12-22-2014 09:56 AM

I wasn't sure if you had 1 league or 2 subleagues.

Glad it's working.

bwburke94 12-22-2014 06:57 PM

The fix wasn't changing the number of subleagues, it was fixing the coding errors. You misplaced the spaces on each line, it should be home="##" /> instead of home=" ## "/>.

thehip41 12-23-2014 08:56 AM

I looked at the file and I see what you are referring to.

I'm glad it is working now.
