Feel Good Sports Stories

Saw this story about an act of kindness by Jermaine Gresham. I thought it'd be nice to have a continuous thread to post stories like this.

Great idea. I don't know about you but I could use a few stories of human kindness, compassion, and just plain decency to restore a bit of my faith in humanity which I have lost in recent years. We should keep the scope to sports-related, given the nature of this forum. I will be on the lookout to share whatever I come across. Thanks.

I saw another NFL/airport story just the other day.

I wonder which major sport's players are the kindest. I'm not an NFL fan, but it does seem to me that you hear more stories like this about football players than any other sport.

I would guess the fact that there are more football players would have a little to do with more stories. I think most athletes do unnoticed random acts of kindness. it is just tough when there are so many jerks out there & media guys simply out to make a player look bad to get a story. Many didn't know Charles Barkley regularly gave triple digit tips, sometimes 4 figures. But everyone knew he threw a drunk thru a glass window.

Especially since he dealt with t.c. years ago. This will be an experience for a lifetime, not that his day (night?) job is bad, either.

Heh, this was smile-provoking:

This one has been making the rounds. Pitcher strikes out a friend for the last out of a game, then consoles him instead of celebrating with his team.

Wow, he brushed by his catcher who was trying to hug him in victory. Good thing he went back to the mound later to join the team celebration.

Nice story though. Sportsmanship is not a factor; these guys are friends and of course striking out a stranger and then hugging him would be a bit strange. But aside from sportsmanship, it's nice to see something more important than winning at all costs.

I mean, this:

But I guess we must realize that this ring was made for the hands of 350lb tackles, among other big dudes. :)

The "rock" I was talking about was the ring. No worries.

Aaron Judge plays catch

The good thing about this instance is, if you look really closely, you can see that Judge "okayed" the game of catch with a very subtle movement of his glove as he was walking out to his position. Apparently he was responding to a shouted request or perhaps a gesture, asking permission.

I was looking for this because I would not be surprised to see "copycats" now doing the same thing but just going ahead and throwing balls at him, hoping he will "play." I am sure Judge had this in the back of his mind - if not, he may now - but went ahead and did it anyway. I hope he will not regret it.

I also hope the officials didn't throw the kid out of the stadium. It's a shame, but these are the things that need to be thought about these days. The fact that millions of people, including thousands of young Yankees fans, saw this video which was recorded on somebody's smart phone and is now making the internet rounds guarantees that there will be repercussions, unfortunately.
