Help Wanted: Name Files

While I was getting the random name files ready (in next week, I'm hoping), I realized that they're in rougher shape than I thought. Several of them are very good, but a whole bunch are just pulled from OOTP Baseball (some of which are OK, while others are...less than OK), and there are a few that are just ad hoc mixtures of other name files.

If anyone's interested in working on them, refer back to this thread in the main FHM forum for examples of what needs to be done and the correct formats.

I'd suggest posting notice in this thread if you've started work on one, that way we won't get people working on the same things. Once you're done, just post the csv files in this thread and I'll add them to the main names file. Remember that we need separate files for both first and last names.

Here's what's needed, in order of priority and why:

Highest-priority (playable leagues):

German (uses the OOTP German names right now)
Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian (no real Baltic name files, I've got the countries set to use mixtures of Russian, Polish, and Finnish)
Ukrainian, Belarusian, Kazakh (those three use Russian FHM names)

High priority (soon-to-be playable leagues):

Slovak (OOTP "Czech/Slavic")
Swiss-German, Swiss-French, Swiss-Italian (the Swiss files just copy the regular German, Italian, and French files)
Danish (uses FHM Swedish)
French (non-Canadian) (OOTP)
Italian (OOTP)
Hungarian (OOTP)
Croatian (OOTP)

Lower-priority (not playable soon, but the names are useful elsewhere)

Spanish (European) (OOTP Hispanic)
Belgian (mix of OOTP French and FHM Dutch)
Serbian (OOTP)
Bosnian (uses OOTP Serbian)
Romanian (OOTP)
Polish (OOTP)
Central Asian (OOTP Azerbaijani)
Australian (OOTP)
New Zealand (OOTP Australian)
West African (OOTP African)
North African (OOTP Arab)
Icelandic (FHM Norwegian)
Greek (OOTP)
Albanian (OOTP)
Portuguese (OOTP)

There are a few FHM name files I'm not entirely happy with right now, either. Russian needs cleaning up, I made the mistake of using the OOTP Russian names to start from and there are a lot of weird things in there - female names, odd spellings, and so on. The Punjabi file was rushed and doesn't have much variety. And the Native Canadian one is a single file for the whole country, so it won't make sense a lot of the time - guys from Nunavut will get Iroquois names, guys from New Brunswick will get Inuk names, and so on. If somebody could put together individual files for some of the larger native, Metis, and Inuit linguistic groups, I'd much rather use those.

I could have a go at the Lativan name set. I've just been looking through some others to see how its set up. What are the numbers next to each name? and how many names are you looking for? and do we need a first name file and last name file or just one big one?

Thanks!

Separate first and last name files, see the ones YZG did in the thread I linked for examples. The first number beside the name is the frequency, so, for example, if "Smith" has a frequency of 500 and there are 500 other names with a frequency of 1, 50% of the players will have the last name Smith. You don't have to use any particular scale, they can total up to any number. The second number is the game's index code for the language; that can actually be left blank or just be set to 0and I'll put the correct one in.

Estonian FN (108) and LN (506) csv files. If I've done them wrong, please let me know ASAP (in case I do any other name files)

Theres the Latvian names!

Any issues then let me know.

I'm happy to do any, though I have no specialist knowledge of any on the list.

Unless there are any Danes here who can do a better job than me I am happy to start with Denmark. I will start at the weekend if no-one else wants (or is better qualified) to do it.

I had a few sets under development/completed lately (I planned to build an add-on ethnic names pack for FHM); some can be contributed right away.

For the moment, I post an ethnic Kazakh (192 + 411) set and a Südtirol (241 + 1120) set, for use in Italy. For Kazakhstan, I suggest using the main Russian set for most players and the Kazakh set for the other ones. For Italy, the Germans in the Tyrol area make up about 25% of the national team, so I figure they're a good addition right away (regardless, the set was already ready a couple of weeks ago!). Kazakh is just a list of names, weakly weighted; Tyroler uses official 2010 census data.

I also have a basic Swiss-German last names (1383 names) file rather ready. There's no first names to go along yet, though. Will work on it.

Finally, I also have a small Serbian and a Slovenian one. They need to be converted to csv and can be sent. I have problems converting the Slovenian set beause of the accents, however... I'll have to try a couple of things.

Here they are for Germany.

Around 500 forenames and nearly 10.000 lastnames.

Hope this will work out and i didn´t do a mistake.

JeffR 03-07-2013 06:38 AM

Everything's looking good so far, thanks guys.

Appreciate your work, but boy do some of these names leave me scratching my head. Aribert for example. I don't think there will be more than two Ariberts registered in Germany in the next 300 years. I will come back to you, if I find the first in FHM :D

Also, I think that they said the frequency can be put to 500? But only one of your forenames is set at 300, all the others even less. Hope the frequencies look alright in the game.

Oh, i sorted out a lot of silly sounding forenames (the file first had around 1400 forenames). the website i had those names from had a strange way of showing the frequency of the names, so i re-did those and made it more simple.

Started the Danish names...I hadn't realized the Danish government had a pre-approved list so that makes first names easy as long as I weed out the thousands of non-ethnically Danish names.

Once I have done Denmark I will do Australia and New Zealand as I have the FHM English name files done already as a starting point.

I'm Danish, so if you want an extra set of eyes or suggestions, please let me know :)

Thanks. I will need surnames checking definitely so I will send them to you when I'm done. If you send me your email address via PM I will get them to you.

The frequency isn't limited by any number as far as I remember.

I'll look at the Ukrainian names. I can't see a good frequency list so I'll generate an approximate distribution off of the Football Manager database.

Here is the first names file that goes with the Swiss German set I posted a few days ago. It may require some tweaking at some point, but it should work correctly for now. It uses official statistics for the most popular baby names for mid-late 90's and plenty of formerly popular names, and less popular names, in smaller proportions. I didn't find very deep lists, so anything in the file weighted with a score below 100 was suggestively weighted -- hence the potential need to tweek the list some time. At least we have something functional for now on.

I can take care of Belarussian now, unless it's been claimed already.

Attached are the Ukrainian name files. The first names are a little sparse, but there really aren't a lot of names in common use. I tried to choose one transliteration of each name (so I've got "Bohdan" but not "Bogdan", "Maksym" and not "Maxym", etc). The surnames is somewhat larger, around 700 names. There are some names in there that are likely Russian, but for historical and political reasons the two blend together, especially in the eastern half of Ukraine.
