We are in Milwaukee to play the Brewers a 4 game series. They lost 3 of 4 in San Francisco over the weekend and have lost 9 of their last 10 games. This is our first meeting this season. We were 4-4 against them last year. The Brewers are 4th in the PCL in scoring with 4.31 runs per game (Portland is last with 3.32). They are last in fewest runs allowed with 4.88 per game (Portland is 8th with 3.84). Their run differential is -27 and ours is -26.

Portland Beavers (22-28 .440 10.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West) at
Milwaukee Brewers (21-27 .438 15 GB in 6th place in the PCL East)

POR: Joe Hoehn (27-R 0-2 4.76) Rookie vs. MIL: Chris Baker (29-R 2-2 3.77)

This could get ugly.... Hoehn is prone to HR and Miller Park is an easy place to hit them and the Brewers are 2nd in the PCL in hitting them... Hoehn actually had a Quality Start last time out, but just barely.

Baker had a save (his only relief appearance all season) and a no decision start against us last year. We scored 5runs in 4.1 IP in the start.

Top of the First:

The Gold Glover, Fernando Martinez, makes a horrible throw and Mitchell is safe and Hinckley goes to 2nd. Martinez gets an error. 1 to 0, Beavers! Glenn Snowden hits a home run to right!!! 5 to 2, Beavers!!!

Bottom of the Third:

PH Dean Powers (33-R) leads off with a double down the right field line. Kenny Masline walks on 4 pitches... Steve Hermanson grounds a hit to right and Powers scores... 5 to 3, Beavers. The Bullpen is stirring. Andres Garcia lines a hit to right and the bases are loaded for the League leader in HR, Fernando Martinez. Antonio Flores lines a hit to right and both base runners score.... 6 to 5, Brewers. Bill Watson lines a hit to right and Flores goes to 3rd... Rick Fountain, an automatic out, lines a hit to center and Flores scores... 7 to 5, Brewers. Dean Powers lines a hit to center and Watson scores... 8 to 5, Brewers... Kenny Masline grounds a hit to right and another run is in... 9 to 5, Brewers.... Lets see how many 2 out base hits, Hoehn can give up in a row... So far, we are at 5.... Steve Hermanson grounds out to 2nd...

Top of the Fourth:

New Pitcher: Juan Romero (26-R) with a 2.45 ERA in 18.1 IP. With 2 outs, PH Kurt Cunning (30-R) lines a hit to right. Rick Woodell hits a home run to right center!! 9 to 7, Brewers.

Trudy's report on Brian Mitchell is a gluteus strain that will take 2 to 3 weeks to heal. He can play, but will not be able to run very well, she days. Well, running is 99% of his game, so that means he will be worthless....

Top of the First:
Jose Julio strikes out on 3 pitches... Jack Hinckley strikes out looking... Fernando Mexicano grounds out to 3rd...

Bottom of the First:
Kenny Masline swings at the first pitch and flies out to center. Steve Hermanson swings at the first pitch and grounds one up the middle, but 2B Shannon Kuchta makes a diving stop and throws him out! Andres Garcia beats out an infield hit. He now has a 14 game hitting streak. Fernando Martinez grounds out to 2nd!

Bottom of the Second:
Larry McNeil walks on 4 pitches... Antonio Flores lines a hit to left. Bill Watson, who has tattooed us so far this series, grounds into a 5-4-3 double play! McNeil goes to 3rd. Automatic out, Rick Fountain, grounds a hit to right and McNeil scores... 1 to 0, Brewers.

Bottom of the Third:
For the second inning in a row, P Frank Flores walks the leadoff batter. This time it is Kennie Masline. Steve Hermanson singles to center and Masline beats the throw to 3rd. Hermanson steal 2nd. Andres Garcia doubles off the wall in right and both runners score... 3 to 0, Brewers. The next three all make outs.

Top of the Fifth:

For the fourth straight inning, the Brewers get their leadoff man aboard; this time with a hit by Andres Garcia. He steals 2nd. Fernando Martinez takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. The Bullpen is up. A wild pitch moves the runners up... Larry McNeil lines out to left and Don Neumann fires to 2nd to double off Martinez! Antonio Flores grounds out to 2nd!!

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Rookie Rich Larkin (22-R), looking for his first career save. PH Stan Babik (23-R), hitting .256 with 2 HR in 43 AB, grounds one to 2nd and Shannon Kuchta throws it away for a 2 base error.... If you are a fan of Kuchta, you had better enjoy him while you can... He will not be our 2nd baseman next year... Kenny Masline strikes out on 3 pitches! Steve Hermanson takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Andres Garcia grounds one to the right side and 1B Glenn Snowden makes a diving stop and tosses to P Larkin at 1st for the out! The runners move up and the winning run is in scoring position with 2 outs for Fernando Martinez, the League leader in HR.... He is walked intentionally... That seems sensible, but Larkin's control is not that great and Larry McNeil, the next batter has already walked twice this game... 2-2 pitch from Larkin and McNeil tries to check his swing, but the ump rings him up and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!

I had dinner with the Brewers's GM after the game and he lamented how his team was so desperate for starting pitching and I lamented how my team was so desperate for Major League bats. And out of the blue he said that Fernando Martinez could be had for a good pitcher. I told him that I did not have any to spare. I agreed that we had some good ones, but we did not have anyone who could take their spot if we traded them away. He said, " You got a good one that is not even in the rotation now, so you won't miss him." I said, "I thought Joe Hoehn would be decent, but he got lit up." He said, "Not Hoehn. I am talking about Ricardo Gil." "But Gil won't be able to pitch until August." "Oh, we aren't going to win the Division this season anyway; I need him for next year."

Trade #28:

P Ricardo Gil (23-R) to Milwaukee for LF Fernando Martinez (27-L).

P John Cox (29-L) and P David Fuentes (25-R) have been sent to Vancouver (A). P Mike Wagner (30-R) is recalled and P Larry Warner (26-L) is called up to make his Major League debut.

I looked around for a lefty reliever to trade for and there are none to be had. There are very few who are any good and those are either slackers or injury prone or old men.

We are back in Multnomah County Stadium to face Oakland in a 3 game series over the weekend. They just split 4 games at home with Salt Lake City. We are 4-0 against them on the season, having swept them in a series in Oakland in the middle of April. The Oaks are 11th in scoring in the PCL with 3.93 runs per game (Portland is still last with 3.33). Their batters have the 2nd worst BA in the League (.236), but that is miles above us (.227). They are 13th in fewest runs allowed with 4.57 per game (Portland is 8th with 3.98). Our pitchers have been the 2nd toughest to hit (.233). The Twins are allowing only a .222 BA to their opponents. Oakland's run differential is -35 and ours is -35.

Oakland Oaks (25-29 .463 11.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (23-31 .426 13.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

OAK: Cary Cornman (35-R 1-6 5.43) vs. POR: Steve Muir (27-R 4-4 2.12) Gold Glove

We beat Cornman back in April but only scored 2 runs (1 earned) in 7.2 IP. He was 16-8 with a 3.62 ERA last year.

Muir has lost his last 2 starts, allowed 8 runs in 13 IP, but only 4 were earned.

Top of the Third:

Bottom of the Seventh:

Rick Woodell loops a hit to right and steals 2nd. Jack Hinckley draws a walk. Set up perfectly for the Big Three! But they all make outs... It does not mater what I do; we will just never score runs....

Top of the Eighth:

PH Bobbie Duvall (34-R) lines a hit to left. With 1 out, John Trent grounds one to the right side and 2B Shannon Kuchta makes an unbelievable stop and throws him out! Duvall goes to 2nd. Javy Puente lines a hit to center and Duvall scores... 3 to 2, Beavers. Call to the Bullpen: Larry Warner (26-L), to make his Major League debut. Let's see if THIS left-hander can get a left-hander out... Tim Metts swings at a 3-2 pitch and hits a home run to right... 4 to 3, Oaks... No, this left-hander cannot get left-handers out... I give up... Our offense is never going to be score any runs and our Bullpen is never going to get anyone out when it matters... Never!

Bottom of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Larry Johnson (24-R), their closer with a 1.21 ERA and only 11 H and 6 BB in 29.2 IP. 0.57 WHIP... Right-handed batters are 3 for 53 against him (.057). Bottom of the Twelfth:
Top of our order up now. Let's get a run! With 2 outs, Fernando Martinez takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Glenn Snowden walks. Fernando Mexicano strikes out....

Top of the Thirteenth:
Top of their order up. Alex Uriegas doubles down the left field line... With 1 out, we walk RF Gerry Elliott (29-L) intentionally, much to my chagrin... Their two big boppers, Javy Puente and Tim Metts are out of the game, by the way. 1B Alex Montoy (35-S) grounds a hit to center and Uriegas scores... 5 to 4, Oaks. Call to the Bullpen: Mike Wagner (30-R). Mario Rodriguez grounds into a 5-4-3 double play!

P Ken Powell (30-R) is on his way back to Vancouver (A). There are whispers that he might not make it that far.... Who do we call up? None of the guys we sent there recently have been there the required 10 days and we have not put anyone on the DL.... I guess it will be P Jennings Sims (29-R), he of the odd name and the ugly ERA.... Actually, the 4.08 ERA he pitched to for the Beavers last year, doesn't look that bad compared to what some of these guys are doing this year....

Oakland Oaks (27-29 .482 10.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (23-33 .411 14.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

OAK: Greg Ware (26-L 8-1 2.05) vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (23-R 3-4 2.40)

Ware was their closer last year, but is their #1 starter this season. He had 2 SV against us last year; we have never faced him as a starter. He has pitched 3 straight complete games and has a string of 8 in a row where he has gone at least 8 innings and allowed 2 or fewer runs. He is currently 2nd in the PCL in SO with 82.

Johnson gave up 3 runs in 6 IP last time out and took a loss.

We are in Seattle to play a 2 game series. The Rainiers won 2 of 3 here over the weekend from the Angels. We are 0-2 against them on the season, losing 2 games here on April 15 and 16. We are in Utah to play the Bees a 4 game series through the weekend. They just won a pair of game from San Antonio here by identical scores of 4 to 3. They lost their closer in yesterday's game, however. Jim Nash (37-L), who has 12 SV and a 2.25 ERA is expected to miss 5 weeks with bone spurs in his elbow. Their ace, Bill Wertz (31-R), who won 25 games last season, pitched yesterday and we should miss him in this series, too. This is our first meeting this season with the Bees and we were 3-5 against them last year. They are 11th in scoring in the PCL with 3.93 runs per game (Portland is still last with 3.37). They now have the 2nd worst BA in the PCL (.236), but are still a good bit better than our .228. The Bees are 12th in fewest runs allowed with 4.48 per game (Portland is back to 8th with 4.05). Their pitchers are allowing the opposition to bat .276, the worst in the PCL. Ours are at .236, the 2nd best. Their run differential is -32 and ours is -40.

Bottom of the First:
Frankie Clontz takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... I swear that every walk our starting pitchers have allowed has been to lead off the inning. With the infield in, Jeff Galka grounds one to the hole on the right side and 1B Glenn Snowden makes a lunging stop, checks the runner back to 3rd from his knees and then scrambles to the bag for the out! By a hair! Their manager is out to argue, but I have yet to see the umps overturn their own call yet... Glad we do not do stupid things like use the camera replays to make calls.... We walk John Polanski intentionally so that we can force in a run with the next walk.... Once again, we have the bases loaded with 2 of the runners being put their on purpose... Joe Moyers grounds out to 3rd!

Extras!
