We are in Kansas City to play the Royals a 4 game series. They won 2 of 3 here over the weekend against the Angels with yesterday's game getting rained out. We were 6-2 against them last year and are 13-11 (.542) since 2001. After a week of play, they are 2nd in the PCL in scoring with 5.20 runs per game (Portland is tied for 7th with 3.67). They are 12th in fewest runs allowed with 3.80 per game (Portland is tied for #1 with 1.80). The whole of the PCL is only averaging 3.38 runs per game after the first week. I think this is because all of the great, but injury prone pitchers, are pitching in the first week. The number will go up. Their run differential is at +7 and ours is at +11, tied with Hollywood and Minnesota for the best in the PCL.

Portland Beavers (4-2 .667 tied for 1st place in the PCL West) at
Kansas City Royals (3-2 .600 1.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL East)

POR: Bill Woodward (23-R 9-8 4.09 last year) vs. KC: Graham Pethel (27-R 0-1 4.50) All-Star

This will be Woodward's season debut.

Pethel gave up 8 hits and a home run and 3 runs in 6 IP in his first start. He has finished 3rd and 2nd in the last 2 Cy Young Award votes. He was 0-2 against us last year, but in one loss, he only went 4.1 IP and only gave us an unearned run, but had to leave with an injury.

Call to the Bullpen: Rich Larkin (24-R). Dave Risinger (28-R) is in to play 2nd in a double switch. Milt White strikes out on 3 pitches. We walk Steve Pierce intentionally... Why walk a crappy hitter to get to a crappy hitter? P Graham Pethel takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three.

Jeff Galka grounds a hit to center and Springer scores without a throw! 7 to 5, Beavers! Tom Higbee lines a hit to left and the bases are loaded with 1 out. To pinch-hit or not pinch-hit for P Ramon Andrade? Well, if I think about and let him bat, he will give up runs next inning, so we pinch-hit with Oscar Trejo (31-R). He strikes out... 2 down. Reid Reddick strikes out looking on 3 pitches...

We are finally home to open Metropolitan Stadium to the public for the first time this season! We welcome the Sacramento Solons for a 3 game series over the weekend. They just split 4 games at home versus Salt Lake City. We were 10-4 against them last season when they lost 101 games and finished in last place in the PCL West. We are 27-15 (.643) against them since 2001, they best record we have against any opponent. They are currently tied for 6th in the PCL in scoring with 4.40 runs per game (Portland is tied for #2 with 5.00). The Solons are tied for 10th in fewest runs allowed with 4.20 per game (Portland is down to #7 with 3.80). Their run differential is +2 and ours is +12, 2nd best to Milwaukee (+13) in the PCL. Miami in the NL is at +25 after only 10 games.

Sacramento Solons (4-6 .400 3 GB tied for 6th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (7-3 .700 tied for 1st place in the PCL West)

SAC: Mike McLane (26-R 1-1 2.45) vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (24-R 1-1 3.46)

McLane is their #1 starter when healthy and, unfortunately, he is healthy at the moment. He gave up 3 runs in 7 IP last time out and took a loss. Last year, he was 9-2 with a 2.14 ERA in 24 starts. In 2001 and 2002, he hardly pitched at all, managing only 3 Big League innings. Last year, we faced him 3 times and he only won 1 game, but we did not score a run off him in 20.1 IP and only had 11 H.

Johnson gave up 1 run in 7 IP last time out for his 1st win of the season.

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Metropolitan Stadium
Weather: 56 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 9 MPH wind blowing in from right
Attendance: 20,787

Top of the First:

Dick Berube grounds out to 3rd. Howie Anspaugh, in his first AB of the year, lines out hard to center. Dave Bafaro lines one to the gap in left center, but LF Jose Julio runs it down! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Brian Mitchell strikes out... Jerry Suazo swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses... Tim Higbee, who you might complain is catching again after playing 15 innings yesterday, is only 21 and can handle it and tomorrow is an off day. He cannot handle P Craig Raposo, though, and strikes out looking... That was not a great start to our hitting day...

Bottom of the Second:

Glenn Snowden draws a walk, Jeff Galka grounds a hit to right and Snowden goes to 3rd without a throw. Jose Julio pops out to right and Snowden holds at 3rd. Dave Risinger grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-6, and Snowden holds at 3rd... 2 outs. Juan Rojas grounds out to 2nd...

Top of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Dave Bafaro beats out an infield hit. Bill Lunsford grounds a double play ball to short, but Juan Rojas boots it... Del Hall grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and the runners move up. Bob Scarinci grounds a hit to center and both runners score.... 2 to 0, Padres. I HATE those derned 2 out singles with runners in scoring position... Rick Tyson lines a hit to right. Denny Peters grounds another 2 out single to center and Scarinci scores... 3 to 0, Padres. P Craig Raposo lines out to 3rd.

Bottom of the Fourth:
Tim Higbee and Glenn Snowden lead off with back to back hits. Higbee now has a 13 game hitting streak. But the next three make outs... We do not seem to get many 2 out singles with runners in scoring position....

Bottom of the Fifth:
With 1 out, P Frank Flores reaches when P Craig Raposo drops the toss at 1st. Brian Mitchell and and Jerry Suazo hit back to back singles to load the bases up. Tim Higbee draws a walk to force in a run! 3 to 1, Padres. Glenn Snowden gets beaned to force in a run! 3 to 2, Padres. That is already the 4th time he has been beaned this season. He led the PCL with 10 last year. Jeff Galka bloops a hit to right and Suazo scores! Tie Game: 3 to 3. Jose Julio pops one up a mile high and the 2nd baseman makes the catch, though the infield fly rule had been invoked. 2 outs. Dave Risinger pops out to 1st... No 2 out single for us...

Bottom of the Sixth:
New Pitcher: Roy Tindale (27-R), who pitched a perfect inning yesterday. Barry Solomon (25-L) is in to catch in a double switch. Jose Rojas leads off with a walk. P Frank Flores bunts him to 2nd. Brian Mitchell lines a hit to right and Rojas scores! 4 to 3, Beavers! Mitchell steals 2nd. But the next two make outs.

Bottom of the Seventh:

Dave Risinger grounds a hit to center and Snowden scores! 5 to 3, Beavers! Juan Rojas swings at the first pitch and grounds into a force at home, 1-2. New Pitcher: Seung-ook Koo (26-L), a rookie who pitched 2 scoreless innings yesterday. He was in our minor league system last year, but we were not allowed to keep him when the B and C Leagues were freed from Major League control. Jerry Suazo is allowed to hit because I am an idiot, but he grounds a hit to center and Rojas scores and Mitchell goes to 3rd! 8 to 3, Beavers! Tim Higbee swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short.

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Victor Alvarez (30-L). Howie Anspaugh and Dave Bafaro lead off with back to back hits... What is wrong with P Alvarez?! He was lights out last year and cannot get anybody out this year...Bill Lunsford takes a 3-2 pitch to load the bases up with no outs... The Bullpen is up. Del Hall grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and Anspaugh scores. 8 to 4, Beavers. Bob Scarinci swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses. 2 outs. PH Dick Singer (29-R) grounds a hit to left and Bafaro scores and Hall goes to 3rd... 8 to 5, Beavers. Denny Peters strikes out.

Won - 8 to 5

We had 12 hits and made 1 error
San Diego had 11 hits and made 1 error

Frank Flores (W 3-1) went 7 innings, allowed 3 unearned runs, 6 hits, no walks and struck out 3. He threw a WP. At bat, he reached on an error and scored a run.
LHP Victor Alvarez went 1.1 innings, allowed 2 runs, 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2.
RHP Ramon Andrade (SV 5) got 2 outs, allowed 1 hit, 1 walk and struck out 1.

Craig Raposo went 5 innings, gave us 3 runs (2 earned), 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. He struck out the side in the 1st, but then no one else.
RHP Roy Tindale (L 1-2) went 1.2 innings, gave us 5 runs, 5 hits and 2 walks.

RF Brian Mitchell had 3 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBI. CF Jerry Suazo had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. C Tim Higbee had a hit and a walk and an RBI. 1B Glenn Snowden had 2 hits with a double and a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. 3B Jeff Galka had 2 hits and a walk (INT) and had an RBI. 2B Dave Risinger had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. SS Juan Rojas drew a walk and scored 2 runs. PH Enrique Ramos missed a Grand Slam by 10 feet and settled for a SF.

For San Diego, RF Dave Bafaro had 3 hits with a double and scored 2 runs.

Even though we won both of these games, I think the Padres are going to be our biggest threat to repeating as Division Champs this year. They have the best defense I have seen in the PCL since I have been here. It is better than ours, and I emphasize getting players who can pick it. The Seals, with all of their awesome hitters, have lost 11 in a row and are not looking like much of a threat.

Around the League: Fernando Mexicano (23-L) of Cleveland, the ex-Beaver, hit his 5th home run today and now leads the NL in HR and RBI (22). He is hitting .356 and the Indians are tied for 1st place. I wish him the best and am sorry things could not work out in Portland.

Today is Frank Flores' 25th birthday!

We are back on the road, but not far from home in Seattle to play the Rainiers a 2 game set. They split 4 games here over the weekend with the Angels. We were 9-5 against them last season when they were 76-86 in 7th place in the PCL West. We are 21-21 since 2001. They are currently tied for 9th in scoring in the PCL with 4.21 runs per game (Portland is tied for 5th with 4.47). We have scored 5 more runs than they have. The Rainiers are 8th in fewest runs allowed with 3.95 per game (Portland is 6th with 3.58). We have allowed 7 fewer runs than they have. Their run differential is +5 and ours is +17.

Portland Beavers (14-5 .737 3 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Seattle Rainiers (10-9 .526 4 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: Bill Woodward (23-R 0-1 7.20) vs. SEA: Earl Rogers (29-R 2-2 4.94)

Woodward gave up 4 runs and 10 hits in 4.2 IP last time out to get the loss. Pitching him in the Kingdome is cruel and inhumane, but sending lefty Bruce Ancona in there against their right-handed bashers seems even more cruel.

Rogers is their #1 starter. He gave up 1 run in 8 IP last time out to get a win. He was 16-16 with a 3.68 ERA in 36 starts and 247.1 IP last season, which is not bad in the Kingdome. Only 14 HR allowed. He was 1-2 against us last season with a 5 hit shutout. In the 2 losses he went at least 7 innings in each.
