Tell me why II?

I have a pitcher I drafted a few years ago. He's now 23. He has an 18 Stamina. (20) point system. His potential is 60+. As a reliever he is 63-63. I change him to a starter and he is 21-62. (80) point system. Why? And what effect using him as a starter as his position is MR or SP. Confused again. I just promoted him as he has a blue arrow.

BTW his first game out. Set as MR and used as Starter.

I'd treat Kline's MR/SP ratings change as a scouting report. Despite the early shutout success, when the league catches up to him he might be more effective as a reliever. That's been my experience with certain control pitchers like Kline, Joe Niekro, Randy Jones, Mel Stottlemyre, etc. They tend to get lit up more often than not once their SP ratings lag behind their MR ratings.

Does it matter if I classify him as MR or SP as far as his performance in the game?

Walkoffman 12-12-2014 01:32 PM

That's a good question. I've noticed the AI uses a fair number of MRs as starters, veterans and rookies alike, so I'd be inclined to to keep him as an MR regardless of how you use him.

In my experience I haven't noticed an effect on performance just from re-setting a pitcher from MR to SP or vice versa. Thoughts anyone?

I hate that the AI pitching staffs become made up of mostly starters

Ike348 12-13-2014 08:29 AM

Whether he's listed as MR or SP will have no effect on how YOU use him. The AI won't lower his performance if you list him as MR and put him in your rotation.

I think that if you keep him as an MR it makes him come out of the game faster, something to do with the tiredness. I found this out by switching a MR (who was slightly tired) to a SP and then it said that he was exhausted, then when I have the MRs start the game, they tend to tire faster because they are MRs and are not meant to pitch for a lot of innings

Ok but does the AI change a pitcher rated MR to a ST if they put him in the rotation?

wodi 12-13-2014 07:57 PM

Yeah I believe the AI changes pitchers depending on where they pitch.

So while they mainly use starters in relief roles, they change them into MR I believe

Are these guys all in your rotation?

wodi 12-13-2014 10:37 PM

This is a CPU roster not my own ..... These are the relievers on their team, all "starters"

wodi 12-13-2014 10:41 PM

I believe if the CPU uses a starter in the bullpen they make him a MR, if they use him as a starter they change his position as such

wodi 12-13-2014 10:45 PM

The issue I am having is the fact that realistically all bullpens should not be made up of starters.

The game is probably just valuing starters over relievers period. And so using a starter in the bullpen will make him in the game better than a reliever.

I feel this needs to be addressed

phillupi 12-14-2014 09:41 AM

Hmm. Interesting. After looking at my current league. All teams are setup the same. 4 Starters. 6 Relievers. No closers. (Started in 1959 and currently 1972). It appears most teams 4 starters are the pitchers with the best Stamina rating. (Understood) In some cases the best Stamina rating is a reliever. Those relievers are all 33 years old or older. Only 2 teams have a reliever with a high Stamina Rating as a reliever under 33. Those 2 pitchers are 27 and 30 years old.

wodi 12-14-2014 11:05 AM

So the teams are all using actual relievers in the bullpen?

phillupi 12-14-2014 01:22 PM

Yes. Remember though this is 60s to 70s. All have a 4 man Strict rotation. And only 16 teams.

wodi 12-14-2014 09:18 PM

Ah ok so the issue I am seeing won't probably occur in historical

phillupi 12-14-2014 09:44 PM

You are using a fictional league? What start year?
