Thursday, March 28, 2002

We ended our Spring Training schedule today with a 5 to 4 loss at the Padres' Training Complex. We finished with 12 wins and 18 losses. Worse than last year's 14-16. Washington had the best Spring record at 21-9. Cincinnati and Baltimore brought up the rear at 10-20. We did not have the worst record in our division; that belonged to the defending PCL Champions, the Los Angeles Angels, who went 11-19.

Two players were hurt, who we were planing on having on our roster: SP Roger Lerer (28-L), who pitched well this Spring, and rookie RP Roy Huls (21-R). Huls will only be out a week. Lerer will be out until May, when he will just get hurt again...

Next up: Meet the Beavers!

Rich Cruz

Almost a clone of Risinger as a fielder, though I guess Risinger is a clone of him, since Cruz is older. Can play excellent defense anywhere in the infield. He is a hard worker and a bundle of energy, but not too bright. A smart fellow who was 6' 4", 220 lbs and athletic as Cruz would figure out how to hit the ball hard... Gives an honest effort everyday. Hit .314 with 1 HR and an .804 OPS this Spring. He will begin the season as the starter versus left-handed pitchers.

A very good bunter. Has a good move to first, but is a below average fielder. Was 1-2 with a 1.86 ERA this Spring, with only 13 H in 19.1 IP with 0 HR, until shoulder tendinitis put him out of action. LF Kim Springer (#2)

RF Paul Moreland (#3)
20 year old (21 on April 13) right fielder who throws and bats left-handed from Riverside, California (in the Inland Empire region). 6' 2" 177 lbs. Rookie. Selected in the 3rd round of this year's B Leagues draft. Not a bad pick to get the #3 prospect with! The #1 prospect is P Mike McLane (24-R), who was the #1 prospect last year, but only pitched 3 innings for Sacramento. He's already hurt again this season and is out until August, so we really have the top 2 prospects in Baseball! In a couple of years, we are going to have a regular Murderer's Row with these two kids along with Mexicano and Snowden! (finger's crossed against injuries) He has good rang and strong arm. He is an average runner and will steal an occasional base. He hit .250 with a .568 OPS this Spring. He needs to learn to let a pitch go by every once in a while...

Editor's Note: Well, I said immediately after the draft, that I was pleased with our haul of prospects, even though I did not get either of the two players I had earmarked for our first pick. But after Baseball America has ranked 4 of our picks as top 10 prospects, I am blown away! How very fortunate!

Opening Day!

New record crowd! 10,000 more than last year's home opener!

Top of the First:

The first pitch of 2002 is a called strike to 2B Britt Snyder and we are underway! Snyder bloops a hit to right. Dan Hamel, in his first Major League at bat, works the count full. With Snyder on the mover, Hamel grounds out to 2nd and Snyder moves up. Irv Hill, the newcomer from the Seals, draws a walk in his first appearance as an Angel. Charlie Allen takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and the bases are loaded with 1 out... Johnson might be a little overwhelmed by the Opening Day atmosphere. This is the biggest crowd, by far, he has ever pitched in front of. Bruce Lundvall works yet another full count before striking out. 2 down. Eli Henderson grounds a hit to right and Snyder scores. Hill l heads home, but new Beaver RF Jose Julio throws to new C Darrel Milewski, who applies the tag for the out! 1 to 0, Angels. 30 pitch inning.

Bottom of the First:
Jack Hinckley lines a 2-2 pitch to right center for a hit! He steals 2nd! The next pitch is a wild one and Hinckley goes to 3rd! Jose Julio, in his first at bat as a Beaver, grounds a 2-2 pitch into right for a hit and Hinckley scores! Tie Game: 1 to 1. With these two anemic offenses and these two stingy pitchers, I never would have thought both teams would score in the first inning! Shannon Kuchta doubles down the left field line! Glenn Snowden flies out to right and Julio scores without a throw. 2 to 1, Beavers! Fernando Mexicano pops out to 2nd. 2 outs. Kim Springer, in his first Major League at bat, swings at the first pitch and hits one very hard, but right at the right fielder.

Bottom of the Second:
With 1 out, Darrell Milewski lines a hit to right in his first at bat as a Beaver, but that is all we get.

Bottom of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Kim Springer gets his first Major League hit with a hard grounder to right! With 2 outs, Darrell Milewski lines his second hit to right and Springer goes to 3rd, but P Bobby Johnson grounds out to 3rd.

Top of the Eighth:
PH Clay David (28-S) grounds one to short, but Dave Risinger boots it... Britt Snyder bunts the runner to 2nd. Dan Hamel grounds a hit to center and David stops at 3rd. Irv Hill grounds one to short, but we only get the force at 2nd, 6-4, and the runner scores... Tie Game: 2 to 2. Charlie Allen swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to center... Call to the Bullpen: John Cox (29-L). He beans Brice Lundvall to load the bases.... Call to the Bullpen: David Fuentes (25-R). Eli Henderson grounds a hit to left and two runners score... 4 to 2, Angels. Jorge Prado strikes out.

Bottom of the Eighth:

New Pitcher: Dave Reeder (26-R), he had a 3.04 ERA in 77 IP last year with only 22 BB and 90 SO. Jose Julio lines his third hit of the game to center. Shannon Kuchta strikes out. Glenn Snowden hits a home run to right!! Tie Game: 4 to 4! That ball just barely cleared the fence! 348 feet! Fernando Mexicano loops his first hit of the year to right! Kim Springer flies out to left. 2 outs. PH Rick Woodell (30-L), making his Beaver debut, grounds out to 2nd.

Top of the Ninth:

Rich Cruz is in to play short in his Beaver debut. PH Reid Phillips (28-L), who hit .217 with 9 HR in 327 AB last year, tries to check his swing on a 3-2 pitch and gets rung up! PH Oscar Trejo (29-R), who hit .263 with 14 HR in 369 AB last year, strikes out! Britt Snyder lines a pitch hard to left, but rookie Kim Springer runs it down!

Bottom of the Ninth:
Let's start this year off right! New Pitcher: Hal Ockey (26-R), their All-Star closer with the League leading 41 SV last year and a 1.23 ERA. Darrell Milewski grounds out to 2nd. PH Don Neumann (32-S) grounds a hit to center! Jack Hinckley grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. 2 outs. Jose Julio takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three...

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Jeff Gleason (25-R). With 1 out, Irv Hill takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. But that is all they get!

Bottom of the Tenth:
Shannon Kuchta grounds a hit to right! He gets caught stealing.... With Glenn Snowden and Fernando Mexicano coming up? Really?! Snowden strikes out and Mexicano grounds out to 1st, 3-1.

Top of the Eleventh:

They go down 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Eleventh:

Kim Springer grounds a hit to left! Rich Cruz bunts him to 2nd. Darrell Milewski strikes out. PH Duffy Bowermaster (29-L), in his Beaver debut, pops out to right. Well, at least that is all we should see of P Hal Ockey...

Top of the Twelfth:
New Pitcher: Mike Wagner (30-R). He did not appear in a game for the Beavers last year because he was hurt most of the season, but he was their closer for several years before I got here. With 2 outs, Dan Hamel lines a hit to left. Irv Hill lines out to center!

Bottom of the Twelfth:
New Pitcher: Troy Armendariz (23-R), a rookie ,who had a 1.32 ERA in B Ball last year with 93 SO in 75 IP. 4th round pick and the #50 prospect in Baseball. Making his Major League debut. Top pf our order up. Jack Hinckley lines out to center. Jose Julio grounds his 4th hit of the day past the second baseman! Shannon Kuchta grounds a hit to left! No caught stealing, please! Julio takes off for 3rd!?! Why? But he is safe! Glenn Snowden swings at a 1-2 pitch and launches one into the right field seats!!!!!! And THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!! Welcome to the Big Leagues, Mr. Armendariz!

Won - 7 to 4

I think if we can get Glenn Snowden to hit 2 home runs every game, we'll have a pretty decent offense!

We are in Sacramento to play the Solons a 3 game series over the weekend. They just split 4 games with the Brewers in Milwaukee. We were 9-5 against them last season, the most wins we had against any team. They are currently 8th in scoring in the PCL with 3.80 per game (Portland is 9th with 3.60). Both of those figures would have been good for last place last season. The PCL ERA so far this year is 3.35 and was 3.92 last year. The Solons are tied for 1st in fewest runs allowed with 2.70 per game (Portland is 12th with 4.20). The Solons are last in strikeouts by their pitchers. We are 2nd best.

3B Duffy Bowermaster (29-L) has been sent to Vancouver (A) and C Rick Mansoor (28-R) has been called up. This is only because of the injury to C Jim Shippy (31-R) and not because we are unhappy with Bowermaster. Duffy will be back at the first opportunity.

Sacramento Solons (5-7 .417 2 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

Jack Hinckley is feeling ill....

We are in Seattle to play a short 2 game series. The Rainiers lost 2 of 3 here to the Padres over the weekend. We were 5-9 against them last season. Seattle is 8th in the PCL in scoring with 4.00 runs per game (Portland is 9th with 3.92). They are tied for last in fewest runs allowed with 5.23 per game (Portland is tied for 5th with 3.54). Since we lead all of Baseball with 15 errors, our team ERA is 2nd best in the PCL at 2.83!

Portland Beavers (7-6 .538 1 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Seattle Rainiers (4-9 .308 4 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

POR: Frank Flores (22-R 2-0 0.53) Rookie vs. SEA: Marty Becker (36-L 0-2 10.61)

Flores had allowed 5 hits in 17 IP to start his Major League career. He currently leads the PCL in ERA! We have no illusions of that staying that way.

Becker was 0-2 in 3 starts against us last year, but pitched well twice.
