The New York Flyers Thread
 

I haven't tracked and recorded much Flyers' history to this point but

So…the story of the Flyers begins in sim year 2019 when yours truly had just signed up for Perfect Team, & spent almost a whole week in the entry pool, finishing with the 4th best record out of 60 teams with players like…Lou Brissie (former A's pitcher), Carlton Fisk (rookie) (89), & Padres 2B Greg Garcia starring. I guess it was mid-week during the entry pools I started to try & put together a great but not necessarily "perfect" :-) team.

In sim year 2019, the Flyers finished with a 98-64 regular season record, won their division & cruised through the first 2 rounds of the playoffs. The Iron League Series would be the New York Flyers vs. the Kango Stars. We lost 4-2, Aroldis Chapman saved a couple games for the Stars I believe, & we generally got slightly out-played. Derek Jeter 2006 was the Flyers' shortstop.

In sim year 2020, the Flyers improved their record in the regular season by 5 games, finishing 103-59. Except no series was meant to be this season. The Flyers were humbled by the Ocean City Seagulls who finished about 15 games behind them, & were struck out of the playoffs when we lost a best-of-5 playoff-opening series vs. them. It might have been a 2-3 series loss.

The Flyers finished 2021 with an identical record as the previous year; 103-59. Heading into the playoffs, I knew nothing was guaranteed. It might have helped because on Easter Sunday 2019, the Flyers won their first Championship by winning all three of their playoffs series. I believe we had to defeat The Chico Bail Bondsmen & Ocala Thoroughbreds in best-of-seven series' in order to be awarded our first virtual trophy. It probably only helped that it was Easter and I didn't sit at my computer and over-manage, ha.

The Flyers, now in a Gold level league, started out the 2022 season by winning 30 of their first 54 games. I made a note of it… I hoped maybe we could continue at that pace & finish 90-72 given the becoming slightly stiffer competition…I'm not sure what they started eating for breakfast but it was good for them and we finished off the regular season by winning 80 of the final 108 games on the schedule to finish with our best record-to-date, 110-52. However the playoffs were merely OK…We defeated the Chico Bail Bondsmen, but then were swept by the Ddingu Eagles of Korea. Because we won the first series, The Flyers were promoted to a Diamond Level league for the 2023 sim season.

My first season in diamond was an introduction to teams that my "formula€", which had been good for a .617 winning % or so to this point pretty consistently, did not work on…In fact, I believe the Flyers did NOT win their division for the first time in 2023. (Thank You, Aoteroa Angels)… We did manage & play our way to an 86-76 record that was good enough to tie for the best record in the conference among teams that did not win their division. This led to a 1-game play-in against the Indianapolis Knights in which we were crushed even though we had the home field. (Thank You, Adalberto Mondesi)…

So I felt I had to make some adjustments for 2024 & I did, and it led to a 97-65 record. I knew the playoffs would not be easy (the regular season wasn't either) so I did not throw in the towel when I went down to the Indianapolis Knights & Wisconsin Beer Barons 2-0. I won games 3, 4 & 5 in the best of 5 vs. the Beer Barons,…& against the Knights, and came back to win the series 4-2 after going down 0-2…The World Series went a little differently. The Flyers went up 2-0 against the Richmond River Otters, lost the next 3…then finally won games 6 & 7 to win the Diamond Series. Tony Oliva happened to be the Series MVP, (we had a high sub frequency at a number of positions)… , & we had won our 2nd virtual trophy after a GRUELING sequence of playoff games in which we went 11-7 overall, coming close to the current maximum of 19 or 20.

Through the first 6 seasons, the Flyers won their division 5 out of 6 times. 2025 marks a decided change in that trend. Let's fly right into it:

In my first year in Perfects, I won my first game! Vida Blue pitched great and the Flyers were 8-1 winners… From there the Flyers won just 53 of the remaining 161 games on their schedule to finish 54-108, or an average of 1-2, for a .333 Win Pct. …David Cone's performance was most memorable: David Cone's 1988 card is a good one; I watched him that year and he was great…& to this point in Flyers' sims he had gone 70-40 overall, his ERA ranging from just under 3 to just under 4. But he ended up with a pretty different line in my first season in Perfects: a 5.61 ERA to go along with a 3-16 record.

I wasn't really sure how aggressive to be about getting better but my record was 54-108, BA was .232, and ERA a very high 5.68 for 2026 & I figured I'd at least see what I could do about improving the BA & ERA for 2027.

So in 2027 the Flyers got back at it in Perfects this time littering their batting order with guys who hit .300 or better in real life… The BA improved from .232 to .265 (which is still my best in Perfects), the ERA improved from 5.68 to 4.62…and so the overall Runs-Runs Against improved…from 646-961 (-315) in 2026 to 737-787 (-50) in 2027. Cone found a home in the bullpen. The Flyers won 23 more games as well, improving from 54-108 to 77-85.

So I figured I could get back to competing with a few more additions/tweaks in 2028 and compete we did…The Flyers finished 91-71, lowered the team ERA to 3.91…and got to play the Aoteroa Angels in the playoffs. But my refined pitching and batting order alone were not enough to get by the first round as the Flyers fell 3 games to 1 to the Angels.

I wasn't sure exactly what sim year 2029 had in store & in a way I thought maybe I'd missed a chance to excel in the playoffs in 2028 by sitting one of my very best position players…for arbitrary…but reasons that made sense to me reasons…hehe…I thought "I'm not even sure if I'll make the playoffs again next year, I could win about 90 again and EASILY not get a spot."

Anyway, this player was Lou Gehrig, and I just wanted to start him off in 2029 even though I acquired him about 25 games before the 2028 playoffs. 2029 was quite a regular season for the New York Flyers…we finished 102-60 (best mark in perfects regular season to-date) and finished 1st in our division for the 2nd time in Perfects in just 4 seasons after the lousy 54-108 inaugural season. I had 5 good pitchers in the rotation for a whole year and they all lived up to expectations or better. In the 1st round, our old friends, the Wisconsin Beer Barons were our opponents. They had won their division as well…WELL, they beat us 3-1 in a best-of-5 series and I let another opportunity to win a Perfects League get away. The Beer Barons didn't even play .500 ball, but maybe I shouldn't have thought of it that way…Or maybe they just played better in 3 out of 4 games & that marked the end of the Flyers' season and I did not under-estimate them one bit. Not sure.

In 2030, the Flyers went 95-67…we had to go on a late-season run of sorts to secure our 7th or 8th division title in 11 seasons. The Bayou WhoDats made sure we didn't win our first Perfect Leagues playoff series by beating us modestly but handily, 3 games to zero. This left me feeling a bit uninspired, it was like I was riding a wave and it finally crashed…

In 2031, the Flyers finished with a 78-84 record… we hit just .244 as a team which was our worse to date in Perfects except for season one. Our pitching staff posted an ERA over 4 after 3 consecutive seasons of being in the 3s. We finished 4th in the division (I think) but all in all considering the seasons that some of our individual players put forth, 78-84 was not too bad.

In 2032, I strayed from my plan, or original formula, even further (to have some fun with the sim aspect of the game if not win maximum number of games, just cause I had become a bit exhausted)… & boy was the schedule TOUGH TOUGH TOUGH…WOW…I made it through at 75-87, and we were outscored 758-821 by teams that for the most part outscored their opponents by more than 300, 400 even 500? Runs on the year? The Flyers had one month where they went 18-9 and another month where they went about 6-21! This wasn't strictly schedule woes as I had to beat a great team 4-0 in a series in the month where we went 18-9 & did not take any advantage of non-juggernauts in the month where we went 6-21 but the first example of months within one season that were that extreme. To that point, the most irregularity in my monthly records was from a bit under .500 to .655 or so.

Anyway, the Flyers acquired the rights to LHP Johan Santana PEAK SE not by finishing all of those Twins missions but by trading 110,000 PP for him in the AH to gear up for 2033 (6-4 start)…our pitchers look good, and I am going to see if I can put some runs on the board for all the Flyers' fans out there…Or casual followers of the team.

From here the plan is to post occasional or frequent (IDK) updates on the team in this thread & keep on playing ball.

The team went 11-14 in April 2033. Lou Gehrig was awarded player of the week, hitting .650. Dwight Gooden maintained a 1.70 ERA in 5 starts. The team hit pretty well, pitched well but a bit erratically, & lost a few close ones. (2-5 in 1-run affairs.)

The Flyers bounced back with a 16-11 May and currently occupy 2nd place in their division with a 28-26 record. As things stand, they are 2.5 wins removed from a playoff spot.

Flyers went 14-16 on Wednesday/June 2033, & are .500 after 84 games. They're in 2nd place but have some work to do before they are back in the playoff picture.

The 2034 season is underway.

The Flyers ultimately finished the 2033 season at 78-84, an identical record to 2 years previous. They went on a hot streak before the break and improved to 53-47 or so after going 7-0, and came out of the break 1-8, falling to 54-55 or so...and sort of didn't seem to recover from that...I guess about 24 wins in the 53 remaining games. I didn't take time to record much else, so that's it for right now.

Record: 11-14 (4th place, 4 GB), division looks like it could be interesting, all 5 teams except one are up and down, and the outstanding one isn't (to this point at least) running away with it.

Individual Performances to this point:

Morgan (2b) now has 15 extra-base hits and improved his BA/OBP to .185/.276...Yes, that's an improvement from the first month of games.

Bellinger managed to get over the Mendoza line (.229) & has 16 XBH including 6 home runs.

Shortstop Francisco Lindor improved his average to .262 and has 22 RBI on the season.

CF Fred Lynn has 9 HR but is batting just .227 now.

1B/DH Lou Gehrig is hitting just .225 in 151 ABs.

3B Mike Schmidt has been the best hitter on the team so far in most respects with 10 HR, 23 RBI, 25 runs, & a team-leading .323 OB%. Actually, Shoeless Joe Jackson's is slightly better. (.337)
David Ortiz has 16 RBI in 39 games.
David Wright is hitting .204 in 39 games.
Catcher Gary Carter has 5 HR in 95 ABs.
Catcher Joe Mauer is hitting just .189 in the same number of ABs.
Willie Stargell has his average up to .259 with 3 total HR in limited ABs.
George Brett is hitting just .160 in 50 AB.

As far as subbing for any of these players that I normally would have after about 40 AB of under .200 BA, I might wait it out until tomorrow except for the addition of Pete Rose today to maybe generate some runs and hits.

David Cone lost his spot in the starting rotation after winning only 1 start in the first two months. I replaced him with Tim Lincecum.

The Flyers are 1/2 game back after 87 games...I'm not sure how I've managed a 47-40 record hitting .230 or so but the team has hit a good amount of home runs...outscored by 10 runs despite the 47-40 record, a lot of good pitching performances, 4-2 type victories. I am pretty sure the BA and runs scored has no place to go but up but you never know. Not sure how the schedule or the pitching will play for the rest of the season either, I suppose I'll post another update when I've something to share.

We're tied with the Mega Ampharos after 152 games. 10 games left. And the next 3 are vs. the Ampharos. Mike Schmidt just won game 152 with his 100th hit of the season; a 2-RBI single to left in the bot of the 9th with 2 outs down 5-6.

Won all 3 games vs. the Ampharos to give us a Magic number of 4 with 12 games remaining (Flyers 6, Ampharos 6)... That was a big swing in the right direction to sweep that series.

Won the 1st game 3-1.
Won on Zack de la Rocha night, 3-1.
Won the final game, 3-1.

Not to get ahead of myself, but now I'm wondering about the playoffs. I'm 0-for-3 so far in Perfects playoff series.

The New York Flyers defeat the La Crosse Fighting Frogs 5-3 in 11 innings to improve to 93-66 and clinch their 9th division title.

Wade Boggs goes 7 for 11 for the Dodgers, Flyers are out of the playoffs but have at least clinched an extended break between seasons.

The Dodgers, meanwhile, will play the Brooklyn Cyclones in the Conference Championship. The Brooklyn ...vs... Brooklyn

10-8 after the first 18 games of 2035, which is the same number of total teams in the league this year. One conference is 5/5, the other 4/4. Looks like 8 playoff spots for the 18 teams...4 division champions and 4 wild cards.

21-15 after 36. Tweaking a few things...and at the same time pondering well, other things outside the PT Universe, and umm, inside, ...I'm generally pondering as the games play out, if I make the playoffs again, I want to be as prepared as...well, is possible.

small winning streaks, small losing streaks. winning streaks have been slightly longer. I felt the mojo go right out of me at one point... or maybe not. Have you ever done yoga? Helps you understand what that kind of thing is about anyway.

40-32 after 72 games in 2035... June All-Star break.

The New York Flyers are 59-46 after 105 games.
Robin Yount has started some games at SS for them now.
So far, he is hitting .230 and grounding into double plays.

Here's how things stand in our 18-team league...teams with a red mark next to them are in the same division. So are teams without a red mark next to them.:laugh:

Flyers are 81-59 going into Saturday's sims. We are comfortable out of 1st place...about 18-24 GB but comfortably close to clinching a Wild Card spot. I'm thinking the wild cards might get to play in a best of 5 because if there is a best-of-1 round with Wild cards it would leave 3 teams....so it'll probably be 2 sets of best of 5s...seeing if I can add maybe another player or 2 before the playoffs or just figure out what I believe to be the ideal 25-man + arrangement for the playoffs...even though that's not guaranteed yet it's worth trying to take advantage of the 18-team league this season I figure. Hehe.

The Flyers are planning on having a semi-experimental season...
We acquired enough cards to hopefully be semi-competitive even without our very best in. I would like to rotate a lot of players in, some of them for short stints & just see how they do for 1 series or ...6 (18 games), hey if a guy performs well, I might leave him in there until it's clear it was an aberration... This could make up for me not having my best lineup in every game.

The general thought with averages is it is bound to hurt our bottom line come W-L for the season since the average player in is going to be of slightly lesser quality at some spots at some times but I believe it will help keep the boxscores, some of the stats, & many of the outcomes :D and my engagement with the interface more interesting.

I find sometimes I get stuck on what my win % is during the regular season. This will keep me busy doing something else.

Maybe the Flyers updates will be a little less kinda dull as well.

If all goes as planned (it probably won't), the team will continue to operate with its competitive core but have "Special Guests" every 3-18 games or 1-6 series.

They will be from a group of 139 or so cards I've set aside for this purpose. So...at MOST the Flyers could end up playing about 35 semi-regulars + 139 of these special guests for a total of 174 different players with appearances in 162 games.

That is a very unlikely scenario but I could well end up using over 100 cards.

Here I will re-cap the performances of the cards I swap in every 3-18 games... I let Berra, Strawberry, Reggie Jackson & Bullet Joe Rogan go 4 games.
Jeff Bagwell received an extended stay for a solid performance at 1st. Berra received an extended stay because he's a great catcher even though his number (OVR) is lower than my primary catchers.

Strawberry was 0-for-12 and struck out 8 times.
Reggie Jackson had a key hit in a close victory, a double.
Bullet Joe Rogan did not get to take the mound, fortunately or un.
Jeff Bagwell hit slightly under .200 but had a solid approach and like Reggie had 2 key RBI.

This round's guests are Charlie F Berry (Catcher), George Foster LF, & Jeff Reardon (RP).

I might as well note in this post as well that we won 3 out of 4 from the Fighting Ferrets. They gave me fits a few seasons ago. This series was certainly not, as you can tell by looking at the opening day lineups, easy to win.

It's only April 5th, 2036 but it occurred to me the P406 2036 will be a dramatic? affair. We've got Expos, Flyers, Ferrets, Amazins, Graduate Students, a Wolfpack, Scrubs, Huskies, Corn, Blues, more Blues, Mud Hens, Cowboys!, a Thundering Herd, & Buccaneers here in the West.

And in the East? So...2nd set of subs did not work as well as the 1st.

Despite not really good raw numbers from the 1st set they contributed.

Charlie F Berry caught a fine game but I believe he took an o-fer.
George Foster did not provide any explosiveness with his bat in very limited action. Maybe I should have given him more than 4 games but I have...that...that...priority this season to play many, regardless.

Jeff Reardon came on and pitched OK? But did end up allowing a "walk-off sacrifice fly" in his lone appearance despite recording 5 outs and being clean otherwise.

Sso I'm still swappin' but I'm gonna have to figure out how to pace it and work within sort of the confines of the 25-man roster. Anyway,

While Kazuo Matsui, Tony Gwynn & Wander Suero were active the Flyers snuck 5 wins in 5 games in...& I mean it, these were not 12-1 victories.

Kazuo Matsui naturally accounted for 1 run in the game he played.Drew a walk, made it around.

Tony Gwynn was just an ordinary single in seven ABs out there.

And Suero did not get pressed into action.

So no heroics but I'm not sure if I want to take them out until the team...ahh, forget it, next super-subs are due in.

Actually just one for now.

Bobby Knoop 2B (Angels)

So Bobby Knoop hit .300 while he was in there.
Tex Carleton had 2 good outings but one pretty bad one.

And Suero, Kaz, & Gwynn might've been good luck or something after all.

Team abruptly went from 9-4 to 10-11 after taking them out … of course the season is young, and the next super sub up is Joe Nuxhall SP (Reds).

Nuxhall is starting the next game. Adrian Gonzalez got in for a pair of games I think. He was not able to collect a hit. 3B Vinny Castilla will be getting a start as well.

By my count they will be the 45th and 46th Flyers to take the field in 2036.

Nuxhall went 6 innings giving up 3 ER for the win & Vinny Castilla homered. Flyers beat Ryan again, 6-4; a 14-12 month.

The Flyers are hitting .213 after 30 games. 0-4 to start today, (14-16 overall), I might've played a couple more players...yes, I believe Greinke saw his first action...Sewell (SS) is up next...I thought I had him up to play but I probably did it wrong and my regular started. He didn't hit. I wonder if I can get my BA up to .260 132 games from now...

I wonder if there is a time to be superstitious even in a statistics/ratings-based game like this. Sewell went 0-for-3 with a walk but we did get our first win of the day and I did have well, it wasn't a premonition or anything but I don't know if I want to move on from this lineup just yet.

In other news, Shoeless Joe Jackson is hitting .377 on the year. That's right we're 15-16 with one .377 hitter, a .215 team BA, & a collective sub that's being subbed in & out a little more frequently than I had planned made up of about 150 cards.

Sewell...:-), you ever get a card that you just think, "Yeah, I'll use that one." …("But you have better cards.") "Whatever, this is a good one."

Oh, and Mike Gallego is 2-for-6 in a couple of games.

Somehow I got entangled in a conversation about whether actually I'm not even sure what the conversation is about exactly but involves the differences between the infield positions, playing 1B, playing 2B, playing 3B, & playing SS...I just pointed out that they are 4 different positions but then ended up arguing or something or at least was told I was arguing. lol

I almost wasn't going to wake up today, at least as early as I did...Anyway here I am.

Carlton Fisk will catch the series against the Montreal Expos.

I decided the umm positional debate was just a little...just a little ridiculous or nonsensical and feel no need to comment further right now, so I fell asleep shortly after the games started yesterday & woke up today and did a sim outside of perfect team where volunteers from facebook voted in teams they wanted to see in a fantasy league. Then I signed into Perfect Team & got back to managing the Flyers.

I got RF Bryce Harper in a pack about 10 days ago, I decided to sub him in for some period of time...(Carlton Fisk) is still in there. & Jim Abbott started game 56 for the Flyers:

Abbott was run from the game as he was in 2 previous appearances in Perfects rather quickly (2 IP, 8 ER) but bombs away...GEHRIG, MAYS, HARPER, SCHMIDT, LINDOR all with HR, we won anyway, 13-12. Mays' was a 3-run walk-off in the 12th inning after we went down 12-9 in the top of the inning.

The team is 32-24 after 56 games. That's 2.5 games out of a playoff spot.

I got Juan Gonzalez (I think it's a 69 MVP) from what I read in another post in. A player was angry that he was only a 69. So far he's hitting over .500 with a couple HR in 4 games. I wonder if he at least played him. (the angry guy)

Frank Funk (Cleveland reliever) is a sort of random guy I used a little until I got to perfects and he has had 2 good appearances from the bullpen.

Jon Matlack won a game in relief as well.

Mike Gallego (2B, A's) played last week. He hit .333 if I didn't mention it already.

The latest players to make a cameo were:

Howard Johnson (5-for-10, 1 HR)
Charlie Kerfeld 2 IP, 1 ER

I left Johnson in ...and Felipe Vazquez in for Kerfeld. Vazquez is rated rather highly but I tend to use lots of starters in the pen & really, just haven't managed to manage to get him in the game except in the manner I'm substituting select cards this week.

Alright, the sub frequency is still a little higher than I intended for whatever reason but here's the news:

John Olerud is still active. He just tends to get on base when he's in there. Left him playing fullish time first base/Gehrig DH.

Felipe Vazquez earned a win...or was it a save? & then I foolishly took him out.:)

Hyun-Jin Ryu is in there. He comes in at an 82 OVR. He has pitched almost 6 innings in relief and has an ERA of 1.59.

Removed HoJO & JuanGone possibly foolishly as well, but I'll take what they gave while they were active...

& Merv Rettenmund & Carlos Beltran. They're honorary Outfielders for a series. So far they're batting .000 in 15 PAs.

Flyers overall are 41-28 and like I said earlier in this thread it could be a close one by the end of the week whether or not there will be a game or games on Sunday for New York. 1.5 GB. That's progress since the last time I checked anyway.

I'm not positive but my estimate is 70 players through 69 games.:flowers:

Just swept in a 3 game road series.
Still 1.5 GB out of Wild-Card and in 2nd place but some kind of run would really have to be made to make up that separation, I was swept by the 1st place team last time, that never helps, almost a 6 game swing (vs. sweeping them)…

For now just put Sewell back in as far as my Guest List...& taking a sort of intermission as for actively moving & shifting things around/shaking them up. Set up 4-man rotation for now, don't know how long that will last.

Hyun-jin Ryu has now worked 12 innings. He currently has an ERA of 3.00.

Bob Friend (SP, Pirates) worked a few innings out of the bullpen as well. A 4.91 ERA and gave up a lead in a losing effort.

Tommy Holmes went 3 for 4 in his first game. He should be in there at least a couple more games.

Lou Brock, a semi-regular, is active for the first time this season.

All-Star Break
 

The Flyers are 54-44 at the All-Star Break, about 4 or 5 games back of a playoff spot.

If my count is right, we've used 77 players in 98 games.

My goal wasn't 100 or anything, but IF WE DID use 23 new players in the 2nd half, we'll have had 100 different players appear in a game in one season.

Joe DiMaggio (rookie) will be the first sub in the 2nd half.

Tiny Bonham made a couple of starts in the rotation before the All-Star break and did QUITE well. Almost thought of leaving him in there...


I think Ernie Banks was a new one as well that I haven't listed. (0-for-3 in one game)…

I woke up today to see that we had won all of our games except one, and then we played the best team & the worst team in the league and went into the All-Star break losing 5 out of 6. 1 for 3 against the best team in the league....0 for 3 against the worst team in the league....AT HOME! Check that, they were one of the best teams in the league and one of the worst.

So we continue to be streaky, and we did sit at .600 at one point but I had a feeling if that was going to change it was going to change to the current .551 and not .650.

First series after the All-Star break just wrapped up. Won 2 out of 3. I got so fed up with 97 Joe Morgan that I was about to put him back in & then decided to put 68 Morgan Houston Astros rookie in instead...I suppose that counts as another player, since I'm going by cards. Well, a half a player at least, lol...

Dwight Gooden had another excellent outing in the 3rd game of the series.
DiMaggio still hasn't seen the field so I'm going to leave him in...

It might be time for David Price to get a spot start or I might put him in the bullpen but he's the next sub up.
Oh and 1970s Reds general "infielder" Tony Perez. Already has seen some action. (3rd game of the first series after the break), might get another start, might not.

And Mookie Betts was just activated for the 1st time in 3 weeks (simulated seasons).
