United League Openings! - 14-team alternate history league with historical players (1977)

The United League, a 14-team alternate history league with historical players, has three openings going into 1977, its 27th season.

This is a well-established league (est. 2003) with a small player pool, moderate sim pace, and dedicated GMs. The league is resuming after a five-year hiatus with 11 of 14 GMs returning!

Available teams include a World Series team poised to be a perennial contender (Brooklyn), a great hitting but poor pitching team in the weaker of the two divisions (Atlanta), and a full-on rebuilding project (Detroit). There is something for everybody here!

Brooklyn Superbas - most storied franchise in the UL, with eight championships. Won the East Division pennant in 1976 with the second-most productive offense overcoming sub-par pitching. Narrowly lost Subway Series to archrival Manhattan Gray Sox. Top players include Mike Schmidt, Tom Seaver, Fred Lynn, Andre Dawson, Keith Hernandez, Rick Rhoden.

Atlanta Hilltoppers - won the pennant in 1974; 4th and 5th place finishes last two years. Great hitting team with Dave Parker, Bill Russell, Oscar Gamble, Bernie Carbo, and Rookie of the Year Butch Hobson. Needs to improve pitching, but has prospects Mike Krukow and Pete Vuckovich about to break into rotation.

Detroit Griffins - hard-luck franchise that won its first title in a Cinderella 1975 season, then plummeted back to last place and a 64-92 record. Ranked second in HRs (Otto Velez, Dick Allen, and Reggie Jackson), but ranked in the bottom three in most every other batting and pitching category.

The league is a perfect fit for an OOTP veteran returning to the game, or a rookie to online leagues interested in the 1970s and '80s glory years. We use OOTP20, Statsplus, and Slack. Check out the league website for more info and email the commish at united.league (at) gmail if you are interested!
