We had 10 hits and made 1 error

Bobby Johnson (W 15-10) went 8.1 IP, allowed 2 runs, 8 hits, 1 walk, 1 HBP and struck out 4.
RHP David Fuentes (SV 13) got the final 2 outs, walked 1 and struck out 2.

Tom Parris (L 14-12) went 2.2 innings, gave us 5 runs, 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 1. He threw a WP.

CF Bobby Mitchell had 3 hits and scored a run. RF Gilberto Valdez had 2 hits and scored a run. 2B Shannon Kuchta had a hit and a walk and scored 2 runs. C Marcell Amici had a hit in his only AB. SS Dave Risinger had 2 hits with a double and 2 RBI.

September 20 - C Charlie Allen (30-S) of Los Angeles had 3 hits with 2 home runs and a walk, scored 4 runs and had 3 RBI at home versus Hollywood. The Angels won, 8 to 5.
September 20 - In the second game of a doubleheader, Detroit beat Miami at home, 18 to 3. The top 3 hitters in their lineup, 3B Jose Parada (26-R), RF Bob Stout (29-R) and LF Michael Guerrero (30-L) went 11 for 18 with 2 doubles and a home run, stole a base, scored 9 runs and had 12 RBI. The Tigers had 20 hits.
September 20 - RF Artie Hawkins (27-R) of Pittsburgh went 5 for 5 with a double and a home run, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBI at home versus St. Louis. The Pirates won, 8 to 4.

Monday, September 24, 2001

We have decided to let Fernando Mexicano play with his injury. He has a shot at 30 HR and a .300 BA. The worst that could happen is he gets hurt and misses the rest of the season, which he would miss anyway with his current injury, if we sat him. The odds of him getting an injury that would last into next season seem remote enough to risk. If this was early in the season, we would definitely sit him.

Melvin Rodarte has been pronounced sound and will play today, but Dave Risinger will start the rest of the games at short this season.

We are in Seattle to play a 4 game series, the penultimate series of the season and our final road games. The Rainiers split 4 games in San Francisco over the weekend. We are 5-5 against them on the year and won 2 of 3 here in our first trip to Seattle at the end of June. They are 9th in scoring in the PCL with 4.19 runs per game (Portland is not last! We are 15th with 3.84). The Rainiers are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.49 per game (Portland is still 8th with 4.35).

We are back home to play our final three games of the season against the Sacramento Solons. They ended their home schedule by losing two of three to Hollywood and have lost five of their last six, the same as us, though we have lost 5 in a row and they won their last game. Julio hit .310 with 3 HR and 25 RBI in 174 AB this year and .315 in 257 AB in A Ball. He was 13-0 as a base stealer. He plays solid D. The only knock on him is he does not like to walk much.

Time for the B Leagues draft!

We came into the draft with a plan. We had the #5 pick. Portland's needs are many and varied. We desperately need a catcher and we desperately need more starting pitchers. We need outfielders that can hit their weight. We need relief pitching. Our infield is acceptable as is, as long as no one gets hurt. We have stars at the corners in 1B Glenn Snowden and 3B Fernando Mexicano. SS Dave Risinger and 2B Shannon Kuchta are not that great, but there are worse double play combos in the Majors. Kuchta had a better rookie year than we had any right to expect, but I am not a fan of his mediocre range and his impatience at the plate. But we do not have the luxury of drafting a replacement for Risinger or Kuchta when we have so many other pressing needs.

I focused on two players: C Joe Taylor (21-R) and SP Dennis Rollo (21-L). If given the opportunity to choose between the two, I would pick Taylor because a good catcher is a lot harder to find when you refuse to accept players who cannot run at all. Taylor cannot run much, but he is not immobile. The only knock on him is that his arm is weak. But the rest of his defense is superior and his bat would be such a huge upgrade over the bums we ran out there last season. Also, there is the fact that there is not another single catcher available in the draft who is acceptable. The ones who are not immobile are either slackers or injury prone...

When our pick came up, however, both Taylor and Rollo were already off the board.... So we went with an outfielder who might be a year or two away from helping us much...


This draft was very weak in pitching. Last year's was a pitching bonanza with 12 hurlers taken in the first round. Only five this time and Rollo was the only one that I thought merited a selection. Hebert and Sayers are too old and Raposo and Jackson are slackers.

Overall, I am happy with our draft, but we need to beat the bushes to get us a legitimate catcher for this season. Last year, we had assets we could trade; this year we have none. To get a good catcher will take giving up one of our Big Three (P Bobby Johnson, 1B Glenn Snowden and 3B Fernando Mexicano) and we are not going to do that. But hopefully, we have some player we can trade to get at least an acceptable backstop....

Trade #20
P Ivan Sanchez (28-L) to Denver for C Darrell Milewski (30-R)

Milewski hit .264 with a .696 OPS as the Bears starter last year. He is very intelligent and a bit of a prankster. Since they drafted C Joe Taylor (21-R), they don't need Milewski anymore. Milewski is adequate behind the plate. He is not a top tier catcher, by any means, but the best we could get without giving up one of our Big Three.

A funny thing happened in negotiations with Denver. They offered to trade C Joe Taylor, the fellow I was hoping to draft, straight up for the fellow I did draft, LF Kim Springer. That is the only player they would take, other than one of the Big Three, though. At first, I was keen on the idea, but then I started to wonder why they would do such a thing, when they could have just drafted Springer in the first place and let us draft Taylor. It led me to suspect that they have learned some things about Taylor that they don't like very much.... So, I passed... Milewski and C Jim Shippy should be an okay catching duo to hold us over until we can find someone we really like.

Trade #21
P Jeff Frith (24-R) to Philadelphia for minor league CF Esteban Mondolfo (30-R).

Firth is garbage; Mondolfo has a good glove and speed and can take a walk, is a hard worker and a spark plug in the clubhouse. He can do it all, except hit the ball.

Trade #22
P Roy Hammond (27-R) to Sacramento for P Ken Powell (30-R)

Hammond is more garbage; Powell had a 2.52 ERA in 50 IP for the Solons, but walked 32. Only 2 HR allowed.

Trade #23
P Edwin Mares (29-R) to Minnesota for 1B Rick Woodell (30-L).

Mares is more garbage; Woodell hit .244 with 20 HR and 73 RBI and 19 SB for the Twins. He can play 3rd, but does not have much range. He will pinch hit and be injury insurance.

Beaver is a Beaver no more... He hit better than most of our hitters, but I could not take all the errors and caught stealing.... 1 SB - 11 CS....

Mansoor is an excellent defensive catcher who cannot hit. This will finally let us purge all the stationary catchers from our roster.

And that seems to be all the trading we can accomplish.

We will hope that our youngsters from last season improve and the youngsters from this draft can contribute.

The overall goal is to get a lower draft pick each season. We had the #2 pick last year and we dropped that to #5 this year. If we can get a lower one next year, I will be happy.

We began our schedule of 30 Spring Training games today with an 8 to 3 win at Milwaukee's Training Complex. Fernando Mexicano (21-L) and new Beaver Rick Woodell (30-L) each hit home runs. Fingers crossed for no serious injuries...

We ended our Spring Training schedule today with a 5 to 4 loss at the Padres' Training Complex. We finished with 12 wins and 18 losses. Worse than last year's 14-16. Washington had the best Spring record at 21-9. Cincinnati and Baltimore brought up the rear at 10-20. We did not have the worst record in our division; that belonged to the defending PCL Champions, the Los Angeles Angels, who went 11-19.

Two players were hurt, who we were planing on having on our roster: SP Roger Lerer (28-L), who pitched well this Spring, and rookie RP Roy Huls (21-R). Huls will only be out a week. Lerer will be out until May, when he will just get hurt again...

Slow runner and not aggressive on the bases. Likes to do crossword puzzles in th clubhouse. Hit .188 with 5 HR and an .814 OPS this Spring.

Duffy Bowermaster

Signed as a minor league free agent in May, 2001. An excellent fielder who can also play 1st and 2nd, but does not quite have the range to play short. Excellent base runner with the speed to steal bases. Good bunter. Hit .375 with 1 HR and a .947 OPS to beat out the youngsters for a spot on the roster.

Dave Risinger
26 year old shortstop who bats and throws right-handed from Hayesville, Oregon (a suburb of Salem, just 45 miles south of Portland on the I-5). 6' 2" 193 lbs. (+3) $180,000. An original Beaver. Decent range, but a very strong arm with a super quick release and very good hands. Can play anywhere but catcher. Very fast and a good base stealer and very aggressive base runner. Hit .295 with 1 HR and a .766 OPS this Spring. With Melvin Rodarte gone, the job is all his this year.

Rich Cruz
30 year old shortstop who bats and throws right-handed from Santiago, the Dominican Republic. 6' 4" 220 lbs. $50,000. Acquired in a trade with Seattle in January. Almost a clone of Risinger as a fielder, though I guess Risinger is a clone of him, since Cruz is older. Can play excellent defense anywhere in the infield. He is a hard worker and a bundle of energy, but not too bright. A smart fellow who was 6' 4", 220 lbs and athletic as Cruz would figure out how to hit the ball hard... A good runner and will steal a base occasionally. A good bunter. Hit .279 with a .621 OPS this Spring.
2000 (A): .247/.313/.348 in 462 AB with 3 HR and 52 RBI and 11 SB for Tacoma

Kim Springer
21 year old left fielder who bats and throws left-handed from North Westport, Massachusetts (12 miles southwest of Fall River). 6' 5" 196 lbs. Rookie. Selected in the 1st round (5th overall) in this year's B Leagues Draft. Adequate fielder and runner, but will steal a base. Easy to get along with. We expect him to hit a lot of home runs once he files out his 6' 5" frame. Bit of a string bean right now. Hit .290 with 6 2B in 31 AB and an .862 OPS this Spring. Missed a week or so with back spasms. He will start versus right-handers to begin the season and hopefully end up playing everyday by the end of the year.

Don Neumann
32 year old left fielder who bats from both sides of the plate and throws right-handed from Brooklyn, New York. 6' 3" 226 lbs. (+8) $110,000. Acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh in January, 2001. His added weight has lowered his already below average range. He has a decent arm. Can play right field. Decent runner and will steal bases and is aggressive on the base paths. Gives an honest effort everyday. Hit .314 with 1 HR and an .804 OPS this Spring. He will begin the season as the starter versus left-handed pitchers.

Brian Mitchell

Good range and a superior arm. Very hard worker. Very fast and will steal bases, but only if he can get on base. Good bunter. Hit .346 with an .818 OPS this Spring, winning a spot on the starting lineup versus right-handers. He tweaked his back diving for a ball and will have to sit for a dew days to begin the season.

After Mitchell's back is ready, he will start versus left-handers, but will end up playing everyday if Mitchell cannot cut it.

Decent range and a decent and very accurate arm. Can also play 1st. Fast runner who likes to steal. Was 13-0 as a rookie thief last year. Very aggressive on the base paths. Soft spoken individual, but easy to get along with. HIt .185 with a .437 OPS this Spring, but missed 3 weeks with back spasms.

A very good bunter. Has a good move to first, but is a below average fielder. Was 1-2 with a 1.86 ERA this Spring, with only 13 H in 19.1 IP with 0 HR, until shoulder tendinitis put him out of action. He is expected to return at the beginning of May, but he seems to be extremely injury prone.

Selected in the 6th round of this year's B Leagues Draft. 98 MPH fastball with a splitter and changeup. Hardest thrower on the Beavers. Not good at holding runners, but a decent fielder. Was 2-1 with an 0.77 ERA in 11.2 IP with 14 SO, before going down with injury. He was diagnosed with acromioclavicular joint irritation, which means he has a sore shoulder and needs to rest s few days. He should be ready to go by the weekend and depending how everyone else in out Bullpen is doing at the time, will determine whether he joins the Beavers or joins the Mounties in Vancouver.

The #1 prospect is P Mike McLane (24-R), who was the #1 prospect last year, but only pitched 3 innings for Sacramento. He's already hurt again this season and is out until August, so we really have the top 2 prospects in Baseball! In a couple of years, we are going to have a regular Murderer's Row with these two kids along with Mexicano and Snowden! (finger's crossed against injuries) He has good rang and strong arm. He is an average runner and will steal an occasional base. He hit .250 with a .568 OPS this Spring. He needs to learn to let a pitch go by every once in a while...

Opening Day!

SS Melvin Rodarte (32-L) hit a home run in his debut for the Salt Lake City Bees yesterday. He hit 1 home run all year for us last season in 468 AB.

We open the season with 2 games at home versus the defending division champs, the Los Angeles Angels. We were 4-10 against them last season. They were 15th in the PCL in scoring last year with 620 runs (3.83/g). We were 14th with 621 (3.83/g). They led the League in walks (649), but only hit .239. We were last in the League in walks (460), but hit a 'robust' .246. The Angels were 2nd in the PCL in fewest runs allowed with 518 (3.20/g). Kansas City allowed 516. We were 9th with 709 (4.38).

We are in San Antonio to play the Missions a 4 game series. They split a pair of games here with Milwaukee to open the season. We were 7-1 against them last year, the best record we had against any team. They finished in 6th place in the PCL East last year, but had a worse record than us by one game (66-96 .407). They were 12th in the PCL in scoring last year with 652 runs (4.02/G) and 11th in fewest runs allowed with 726 (4.48).

Around the League: The Milwaukee Brewers have hit 12 home runs in their first four games, even though last year's league leader, SS Greg Hobbs (28-R), who hit 46, is on the Disabled List. They do not expect him to make his season debut for another week.

Editor's Note: I did not realized until later that Maldonado was a pinch-hitter. I had no pitcher in the game and OOTP sent him up as a pinch-hitter before I made any moves, which is stupid. Normally, I would not take advantage of such a situation, but I am not restarting this game for this small oversight...

Larson was with the Pirates last year and he is one of the catchers that I covet. So, I tries to trade for him this winter, but the Pirates demanded one of our Big Three in return, so it was a no go. The Giants gave then 20 game winner Bobby Brown (28-R) for him.
April 4 - LF Eddie Shelton (29-L) of Boston hit a double and a home run, scored 2 runs and had 5 RBI at home versus Pittsburgh. The Braves won, 12 to 4.
April 5 - 1B Luis Hernandez (33-R) of Seattle, the ex-Beaver, went 3 for 3 with 2 home runs and 2 walks, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBI at Salt Lake City, but the Rainiers lost, 12 to 8.
April 5 - Emilio de la Torre (25-R) of Denver, in his Major League debut, pitched a 4 hit shutout at Sacramento. He walked 4 and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits. The Bears won, 2 to 0.
April 5 - Dick Paulo (25-R) of Boston pitched a 2 hit shutout at home versus Pittsburgh. He walked 1 and struck out 4. The Braves won, 2 to 0. RF Artie Hawkins (27-R) had both hits for the Pirates.

April 6 - Cleveland lost P Bill Curtis (25-R) for the season with a torn labrum. He was their closer last season with 31 SV and a 2.17 ERA. He made his first career start today and it did not turn out well, to say the least. He did get the win though, with 1 run allowed in 5.2 IP. The Indians won, 3 to 1.
April 6 - Don Mack (36-R) of New York pitched a 4 hit shutout at home versus Detroit. He walked 3 and struck out 6. At bat, he had 2 hits. It was his season debut. 1B Mark Stone (34-S) hit 2 home runs, drew a walk, scored 3 runs and had 5 RBI. The Giants won, 9 to 0. RF Bob Stout (30-R) had 3 of the 4 hits for the Tigers.
April 7 - Sam Henderson (27-R) of Los Angeles pitched a 3 hit shutout at Milwaukee. He walked 2 and struck out 5. At bat, he had 2 hits and an RBI. He is now 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in 2 starts. 2B Britt Snyder had 5 hits with a double and a triple, stole a base and scored 2 runs. The Angels won, 6 to 0, on 17 hits.
April 7 - Al Johnson (21-R) of Kansas City pitched a 3 hit shutout at home versus San Francisco. He did not walk a batter and struck out 6. It is the 2nd straight shutout to start the season for the reigning Cy Young Award winner and Rookie of the Year. The Royals won, 1 to 0, and only had 2 hits themselves.
