A.J. Lee grounds our first hit of the game to right and then steals 2nd and goes to 3rd on a ground out. Glenn Snowden lines one to right, but Tom Boyles makes a diving catch, though Lee tags up and trots home. 2 to 1, Bears. That is an RBI by Snowden!!! His first in three weeks to the day!

Top of the Fifth:
Carroll Morse draws a walk, the fourth issued by P Barry Phillips. P Jose Rosa lays down a bunt and C Tim Higbee fields it and goes for the force at 2nd, but his throw is late... But the next three make outs, with Tom Boyles striking out to end the inning!

He lines a hit to right and Peters scores! Tie Game: 2 to 2! PH Juan Rojas (25-S) strikes out looking on 3 pitches... A.J. Lee grounds out to 3rd...

We had to get some pitchers up here from Vancouver (A), so that we are not forced to pitch a CG today. RF Greg Unser (28-R) and RP Steve Stewart (24-L) were sent North with assurances that they would be back in 10 days at the longest. With Stewart, we meant it sincerely.... RP Jon Weekley (28-R) and SP Bill Woodward (23-R) were recalled.

Denver Bears (40-30 .571 0.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East) at

He gave up 4 runs in 5 IP in his last start and had a no decision. We have never faced him.

Krawczyk lost his last start, but only gave up 5 hits and 3 runs in 6 IP.

Bottom of the Ninth:
P Bob Jangula is at 89 pitches. 3-4-5 up for us, but the 4 spot is currently occupied by the pitcher. Enrique Ramos grounds out to short, and my dreams of him hitting back to back walk off home runs are ruined.... PH Tim Higbee (21-S) is sent up. Glenn Snowden (27-R) was used last inning, to no avail. Higbee swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd... It just does not matter who the pitcher is, we cannot hit anymore.... Denny Peters lines a 3-2 pitch to right for a hit. Jeff Galka lines a hit to right and Peters beats the throw to 3rd! Kim Springer, who has been our whole offense with his home run in the 7th, swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd....

Bottom of the Tenth:

Top of the Eleventh:
2-3-4 up for them. Eric Daniels lines a hit to right... Tom Boyles beats out an infield hit... Are we going to have one of those innings where 7 straight guys reach base? Jim Jaeger swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses! Johnnie Graham pops out to center! Colin Woodford grounds out to short!!

Bottom of the Eleventh:
Jerry Suazo bloops the softies hit I have ever seen just over the shortstop's head! Enrique Ramos also bloops one, but his does not get over the shortstop's head and is caught. Won - 2 to 1

We had 11 hits and made 1 error
Denver had 7 hits and made 1 error

9th straight game we have scored 3 of fewer runs in regulation....
In April and May, in 50 games, we were 2 runs shy of averaging 5 a game (4.96).
In June, in 23 games, we are averaging 3.09....
And that is per game; per 9 innings, it would be even less....
Okay, I figured it: per 9 innings, we are scoring 2.85 runs in June....
We are 12-11 in June, despite our offense...

John Krawczyk went 7.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 4 hits, 1 home run, 3 walks (1 INT) and struck out a career high 9. It is a new season high for the Beavers. At bat, he drew a walk.
RHP Rich Larkin faced 5 batters and got them all out with 2 strikeouts.
RHP Jon Weekley went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 2 hits and struck out 2. It was his 1st scoreless outing for the Beavers this season.

Editor's Note: The 1 game a day restriction did not work in changing our luck on offense and I want to play OOTP today....

Denver Bears (40-31 .563 0.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (48-25 .658 1.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

DEN: Norm Ginsburg (36-R 4-3 6.34) vs. POR: Frank Flores (25-R 12-3 1.84) PCLCS MVP

Ginsburg gave up 5 runs in 5 IP last time out and lost for the 1st time in a month. We faced him once last year when he was a rookie and we scored 6 runs in 2.2 innings, but we lost the game. I'd take that today! I want some runs and if we cannot score them against this bum, We are going to have to resort to drastic measures.... What those would be, I have no idea... But I cannot just continue to sit on my hands and watch my batters ground out to 2nd all day long...

Flores has won 3 in a row and given up a total of 3 runs (2 earned). He is making a strong case to be our first pitcher ever named to the All-Star Game. He is trying to become the 1st 13 game winner in the Majors and no one else has more than 10 wins. He is still 2nd in the PCL in ERA, but the fellow ahead of him, Hal Kestler of Dallas, has not pitched in a month and is expected to be out two more weeks.

Top of the First:

Fred Rambo walks on 4 pitches... Maybe starting Marling when he was not fresh was a very bad idea.... Gus McCollum pops one up to shallow right and 2B Dave Risinger runs it down!

We now make a short excursion to Los Angeles for 3 games over the 4th of July weekend. The Angels just lost a pair of games in San Diego. We are 2-2 against them on the season, splitting 4 games here, April 29-May 2. They are 8th in scoring in the PCL with 4.24 runs per game (Portland is #4 with 4.50). The Angels are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 3.92 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.24). Their run differential is +25 and ours is +98, still 2nd in the Majors to San Diego's +107.

Trudy the Trainer was the bearer of bad news today. She says the doctors have reevaluated 2B Shannon Kuchta's thumb and have decided that additional surgery is required. We were expecting him back in a week or two, but he will now be out the rest of the season. So Kuchta has likely played his last game for the Beavers...
