We are in Seattle to play a 2 game set and then we will have a rarity: back to back off days. The Rainiers swept the Seals here in 3 games over the weekend and have won 7 in a row. We won a pair of games here 3 weeks ago, April 26-27. They are 8th in scoring in the PCL with 4.45 runs per game (Portland is #5 with 4.66). Despite playing in the Kingdome, they are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 3.89 per game (Portland is up to #2 with 3.39). Their run differential is +21 and ours is +48, still 3rd in the PCL.

Portland Beavers (28-11 .718 4.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at

POR: Larry McLellan (27-R 0-0 1.50) vs. SEA: Chuck Pitre (36-R 5-3 2.40) 2-time Silver Slugger(01,03)

This will be McLellan's 1st Major League start. Starting John Krawczyk (25-L) in the Kingdome against this right-handed heavy power lineup would leave me open to litigation....

Pitre has won back to back CG with a 4 hit shutout at Milwaukee as one of them. We beat him when we faced him in April, but only scored 3 runs in 7 IP.

We are in San Francisco to play the Seals a 3 game series over the weekend. They had the same 2 days off that we had. They lost 2 games here to Hollywood on Monday and Tuesday and have lost 8 in a row. This is our first meeting this season. We were 9-5 against them last year when they were 82-80 in 4th place in the PCL West. We are 19-23 (.452) since 2001. They are currently 6th in the PCL in scoring with 4.59 runs per game (Portland is #7 with 4.53). We have scored 2 more runs than they have, but they have played 1 fewer game. They are 16th (last) in fewest runs allowed with 5.38 per game (Portland is #3 with 3.43). Their run differential is -31 and ours is +44.

Portland Beavers (28-12 .700 4 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at

POR: Frank Flores (25-R 7-1 2.13) PCLCS MVP vs. SF: Gordy Albrecht (27-R 1-2 3.91)

Flores gave up 4 runs in 5 IP last time out, but still earned a win.

Albrecht is their #1 starter right now with a pair of other maybe more qualified pitchers on the DL. He gave up 4 runs and 8 hits in 4 IP last time out, but did not get a loss. He was 8-14 with a 4.82 ERA in 33 starts and 192.1 IP last year. He was 0-2 in 3 starts versus us last season, with the no decision being the only good game.

RF Jose Julio (30-R), who is 2 for 26 (.077) on the season, was sent to Vancouver (A) and rookie CF Jayson Pemberton (20-R) was called up. He was our 3rd round pick in this year's B Leagues Draft. He is hitting .330 for the Mounties and though he is not walking any, he is our best defensive CF, by far. He will start against lefties and we'll see how he does.

Portland Beavers (29-13 .690 4 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
San Francisco Seals (12-29 .275 16.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL East)

POR: Barry Phillips (21-R 6-0 1.70) Gold Glove vs. SF: Dick Funicello (38-R 1-4 6.00)

Phillips gave up 2 runs and 8 hits in 5 IP last time out, but got a win.

Funicello has lost his last 2 starts, allowing 9 runs, but only 5 earned in 8.2 total innings. We faced him back in 2002 once, when he was with Dallas and we beat him, scoring 7 runs (1 earned) in 1.2 IP. We had 7 hits, so some of those unearned runs must have been his fault...

We are in Hollywood to play the Stars a 2 game set. They swept Seattle here in 4 games over the weekend and have won 7 in a row, a streak we started by losing to them 6 to 5 a week ago Sunday. We are 3-2 against them on the season and won 2 of 3 that weekend here a week ago. They are 12th in the PCL in scoring with 3.70 runs per game (Portland is #4 with 4.67). The Stars are 6th in fewest runs allowed with 3.70 per game (Portland is #4 with 3.56). Their run differential is 0 and ours is +48, still 3rd in the PCL.

Portland Beavers (30-13 .698 4 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Hollywood Stars (26-17 .605 4 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East)

POR: Steve Muir (29-R 3-2 4.14) Gold Glove(01) vs. HOL: Obie Szczepanek (22-R 3-1 7.77) Rookie

Muir gave up 4 runs in 6 IP in his last start, right here in Hollywood and had a no decision. He will be a free agent at the end of this season and we are not going to offer him the money it will take to re-sign him. My hope is that one of the kids we have at Vancouver steps up enough to take his place so we can trade him before the June 15 deadline and get something in return for him. If they don't, we'll just keep him and watch him walk away for nothing. In this League there is no compensation for lost free agents.

Editor's Note:
I would like to to have compensation enabled, but we do not have an amateur draft. To accomplish it with the B Leagues Draft would be possible, but I would have to keep track of it manually. I THINK that if I enabled compensation in the game, the A.I. would then be aware that they were going to lose a pick if they signed a Type A free agent. I will have to do some experiments this off-season and see. I am not going to enable it now, because then it would look like I am just doing it to help my own team....

This will be Szczepanek's 2nd Major League start. His first was against us 9 days ago and it did not go well for him: 7 runs allowed in 1.2 IP. Since then, he has earned a win in relief at San Francisco with 2 scoreless innings.

Jorge Govantes swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit up the middle and 2 runs score... 3 to 0, Stars. Gonzalez is their #1 starter when healthy, which is rarely. In his last 3 starts, he has pitched a total of 6.2 innings, because he has had to leave every game with an injury. We faced him on Opening Day, but he only faced 1 batter and had to leave after giving up a hit.

Trade #55

SP Steve Muir (29-R) to San Francisco for LF Joe Woodhams (23-R)

Woodhams is batting .312 with a .774 OPS at Phoenix (A). He will go to Vancouver (A).

Muir ought to be able to get some starts in that horrible rotation.

CF Larry Ballard (25-L) was sent back to Vancouver (A) and 1B Oscar Trejo (31-R) was recalled. He did not tear the cover off the ball at Vancouver: .264 with a .673 OPS, but we have no one better for pinch-hitting duties available.

SP Bill Woodward (23-R) was recalled from Vancouver (A) and will get another shot at the rotation. He started 3 games for the Mounties and pitched 3 CG and only allowed 1 total run! 12 hits and 0 HR.

We are back home just for the weekend to play the Brewers a 4 game series. They just split a pair of games at home versus Kansas City. We were 6-2 against them last year when they were 91-71 and finished in 2nd place in the PCL East. We are 12-12 since 2001. They are currently 2nd in the PCL in scoring with 5.05 runs per game (Portland is #5 with 4.64). They lead the PCL with 50 HR, though their top HR hitter, 2B Greg Hobbs, is currently on the DL. But even without his 11 HR, they'd still be in the top 5. We are 4th with 42. The Brewers are 2nd in fewest runs allowed with 3.43 per game (Portland is #4 with 3.58). Their run differential is +74, the best in Baseball, and ours is +48, now 2nd in the PCL, 1 run ahead of Dallas, and 3rd in the Majors, behind Cleveland and Fernando Mexicano (+64).

Milwaukee Brewers (29-15 .659 3.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (31-14 .689 4 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

MIL: Vic Kyzer (25-L 6-3 2.48) vs. POR: Frank Flores (25-R 8-1 2.03) PCLCS MVP

Kyzer is their #1 starter. He is 0-3 in his last 4 starts, but his ERA has gone down. The Brewers only scored 3 total runs in the 4 games. He leads the PCL in strikeouts. Words cannot express my dismay that he developed a devastating changeup almost immediately after we traded him to the Brewers. I would have traded him anyway because of the poor habits he had developed, but I could have gotten almost any player int he League with him had he had that changeup before we traded him.... I would have much preferred, however, that he had not developed those bad habits and had stayed in Portland...

Flores allowed 1 run in 7.2 IP last time out for the win. He is trying to become the 1st 9 game winner in the Majors. He is 5th in the PCL in ERA.

Barry Phillips (W 8-0) went 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 4 hits, 4 walks and struck out 7. 141 pitches. The Beaver record is 155 by Bobby Johnson in 2002. At bat, he hit a double. It is his 3rd shutout of the season and his career!

Oscar Rios (L 6-1) went 7 innings, gave us 3 runs, 12 hits, no walks and struck out 2.

2B Dave Risinger had 2 hits. RF A.J. Lee had 3 hits and scored 2 runs. C Rick Mansoor had 2 hits and 2 RBI. CF Jayson Pemberton had 2 his. He id now 5 for 6 (.833) for his career!

Trudy's report on Dave Risinger is a mild abdominal strain that should bother him for 3 for 4 days.

Around the League:
SP Steve Muir (29-R) made his debut for the Seals today, beating the Twins in Minnesota, 7 to 2. He went 8 innings and only walked 1 and struck out 7. He was averaging over 5.0 walks per 9 IP for us. He also hit 2 doubles and scored a run. As I expected, he has been named their #1 starter.

Monday, May 31, 2004

Trudy the Trainer called me last night and reported that RP Rich Larkin (24-R) is ready to go, so we activated him from the DL and sent RP Jon Weekley (28-R) back to Vancouver (A).

And just like that, our 4 game home stand is over and we are back on the road for the next two weeks. At least, this will mean we will have more home games in the dog days when everyone is getting worn out. We are in Salt Lake City play a 4 game series with the Bees. They lost 3 of 4 here to the Twins over the weekend. We were 4-4 against them last year when they were 61-101 and in last place in the PCL East. We are 11-13 (.458) since 2001. They are currently 15th in scoring in the PCL with only 2.90 runs per game (Portland is up to #2 with 4.98). They are hitting .226 (15th) and have a PCL worst .598 OPS. We are batting .279 (2nd) and have a .748 OPS (5th). The Bees are 10th in fewest runs allowed with 4.44 per game (Portland is tied for #2 with 3.51). Their run differential is -74 and ours is +72, now the best in the PCL and tied for the Best in Baseball with Cleveland and Fernando Mexicano.

Portland Beavers (35-14 .714 7 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Salt Lake City Bees (17-31 .354 12 GB in 7th place in the PCL East)

POR: Bill Woodward (23-R 0-1 8.40) vs. SLC: Don Bergdall (22-R 4-4 2.72) Rookie

Woodward's last start for the Beavers was on May 8 and he only went 1 inning and gave up 4 runs (3 earned). But he started 3 games for Vancouver (A) and pitched a CG every time and only allowed 1 total run, pitching 2 shutouts in his last two outings. We are hopeful he has turned things around, but he only get this one shot today. The Bees are about as weak a hitting club as there is. Jarry Park is an easy place for lefties to hit home runs, but the Bees only have two lefties in their lineup and neither is much of a home run threat. No one on their team has hit more than 4. If he cannot keep these hitters in check, we will look elsewhere.

Bergdall gave up 2 runs in 7.1 IP last time out, but had a no decision. He has been tough to hit this year, with 10 of his 11 starts being Quality ones, but prone to wildness, walking over 5.0 men per 9 innings. We have never faced him.

POR: Frank Flores (25-R 9-1 2.13) PCLCS MVP vs. SLC: Rodrigo Pyrrait (24-R 2-6 4.89)

Flores allowed 2 runs and 7 hits in 5 IP last time out, but we scored 14 runs and he got an easy win. We have scored 31 runs in his last 3 starts, but only 7 total in the 4 before that.

Pyrrait went exactly 8 innings and allowed 3 or fewer runs in each of his last 4 starts, but was only 2-2. 2.53 ERA in those games. We faced him once last year when he was a rookie and beat him, scoring 5 runs (2 earned) in 4 innings.
