OOTP Video Tutorial: For New Players

Hi guys,

I wanted to do this for a while. This is a first segment (if people like it) on how to 'play' OOTP for player's new to the game. WARNING; If you already know how to play the game, this is not for you. You will certainly be bored by it. However, for people that that are new to the sport of baseball or entirely new to the game, I hope this can be of assistance. OOTP is a brilliant game but can be a bit tough to get started with. My hope is that this will be a rough, visual guide.

Anyway, please let me know if you have any questions and if you would like me to continue the series. I am not an OOTP expert by any means, but I have a voice, Camtasia and have been in love with this game for the last 8 versions. Enjoy.

Part 1: Getting Started

Part 2 : Roster Management and MLB Rules

I ramble a lot on this one a lot more than I would have liked to but I hope it still is informational. Thanks for the kind words.

Part 3: Contracts and Finances

Fantastic videos...thanks very much! I'm pretty new to OOTP (and baseball!!) and these are going to help a great deal...look forward to more!:D

Phatman 04-13-2012 02:32 PM

I have been playing this game for the past 2 season and I stil learned something from it. This is a good video. I saw you plan on making another one, I'll be watching.

jbmagic 04-13-2012 02:38 PM

Great video. If you play with coaches and managers off, what option will you have when asking to set up lineup for you?

MikeG719 04-13-2012 03:53 PM

good stuff.

WhatIsTheMatrix 04-13-2012 05:02 PM

Thanks for the video.

It certainly helps me appreciate more about the depth line ups.

Though I've bought the last 3 OOTP's and 2 iOOTP's I still don't understand baseball like I do say football (soccer) so video's like this will help fellow noobs like myself appreciate the more intricate elements of the game.

I have found watching baseball on ESPN America helpful to learn some of the rules etc so it all helps.

I look forward to more video's to help us play this brilliant game.

Cody, this is awesome stuff and it should be stickied. It's gonna get lost in here within a few days and that'd be a crying shame. This stuff is way to beneficial to new users for it to get lost in the shuffle.
Thanks for all your time and effort with this project.
I'd contact Markus and see about getting them added to the video turorial section on site here as we really need more of those:

I look forward to the next video. Even though I have been playing OOTP for a number of years, it is always good to see how someone else navigates around the game, and it helps to learn the new interface.

Thanks man. The main problem is that the MLB stuff is used in my game so Markus and co can't officially support it. I would have use fictional leagues but I thought real life players would be easier to get people used to.

Ahh that's right. Didn't even think about that. Should still sticky this post though. Hope you don't mind, but I posted a link to here over in the New to the Game section.

robroy 04-14-2012 01:55 PM

thanks for the video

Thanks for the video I have watched baseball and played ootp for many years and even reading the manual was always confused about the rule 5. Instantly you cleared up this and maybe you thought you were rambling but the information got across like a light bulb above my head. Your videos are much appreciated to a non USA person where soccer is more knowledgeable to the public.

If you can produce more videos many more newbies I believe will be able to increase their enjoyment of this great game and its people like yourself on this forum which I found to have such a passion to help other users money cant buy.

Thanks again.....:D

cody8200 04-14-2012 03:03 PM

Mods, thanks for stickying this. Please correct my spelling on the title on the word 'tutorial' if you can as well :)

Stinson 04-14-2012 04:32 PM

Thanks so much, Cody.

Being new to baseball and OOTP, I've been dying for a proper intro like this. Assumptions and blind button-clicking has only gone so far :p

ashantewarrier 04-14-2012 05:41 PM

As a OOTP vet who has played the gamed since version 3, I have to say thanks for posting this!

steelerz 04-14-2012 06:20 PM

Thanks this helped me learn about the scouting in this game.. Looking forward to more videos :woohoo:

Ginger 04-14-2012 07:38 PM

Absolutely fantastic...as somebody who loves baseball (and OOTP), but is a novice when it comes to some of the transaction/roster move rules in the Major Leagues, this tutorial was enormously helpful.

CNOSLIM 04-14-2012 07:56 PM

awesome videos man

vallanck 04-14-2012 08:27 PM

As a new player to this franchise, as well as simulations in general, these videos were very helpful and extremely well done. Thank you.

GoodOlKevin 04-14-2012 10:42 PM

how do you get your screen to look like that? With the black backgrounnd and a lot more information fitted to one screen.....

cody8200 04-14-2012 10:58 PM

The higher your resolution, the more information that is shown. I use 1440 x 900.

You can change the skin by going to Game, Preferences, Current Skin and use OOTP 13 dark.

Thank you very much....I'm new and still learning. Very nice first video, on to the second one now.

DaddyO 04-14-2012 11:07 PM

Thanks you SO much for these videos, Cody. As a relative newbie they're greatly appreciated, if nothing else just to see how someone else navigates.

cody8200 04-14-2012 11:12 PM

Thanks guys. Finances and Contracts should be up tomorrow. It is rendering right now.

steelerz 04-15-2012 12:40 AM

in your first video you said something about the pitchers under the age of 25 should never throw more than 100 innings... did u mean to say 100 pitches because i got kind of confused right there... so i just wanna make sure about that.. also I have a 22 yr old rookie starting pitcher.. should i set his pitch count limit lower than 100.. like maybe around 70? Its Randall Delgado of the Braves and he has a 14 stamina

Haha. I realized my mistake after listenining to it again and meant to make a note. I meant 100 pitches per game for players under 25. Usually 90 pitches will be fine as it should leave him under than 100 pitch count.

How who you have your transaction area set up to 6 boxes instead of 4?

EDIT: Didn't see this was answered already.

The black background is one of the other skins included with the game. Much easier on the eyes when you mostly play later at night.

He also is using the full screen mode instead of window. In order to get everything to show up, besides just changing to full screen you also need to play with the resolution.

It's all in the options on the intro screen. You can get there in another place, but that's the easiest place to find it.

Full screen and change the resolution. You can actually get 9 boxes to show up on that screen.

I agree!! With the complexity of this game, it may scare many potential players away (like my nephews, who I since have brought back into the fold), these videos are a GREAT way to visually teach new and old players the nuances and even basic game play options for the game.

IMO these videos should be part of a collection hosted on the main OOTP 13 pages for prospective customers to readily view.

Keep up the great work Cody!!

seasideda 04-27-2012 09:40 PM

Just bought the game a couple weeks ago. This was very valuable. Still learning the ins and outs of the game. Are you in the process of doing more??
If so, I would love a tutorial on topics related to more technical, out of game stuff like how to use third party apps, changing parks, uniforms, logos and the various options on setting up leauges.

One question on the pitching comment. If I decide to set my pitchers who are young to 90 pitches per game, the manager does auto. pull them no matter what, even if hes pitching a 1 hit or no hit shut out after 90 pitches???

Great Stuff. Thanks!

I know in the real world that pitch count is important but do we really know if Markus coded it that way?

Thx,
jonpfl

Whoops, I guess I better do that for my stud prospects in the minors!

So, if you overwork your young prospects, there is a better chance to shorten their career in the bigs? I assume once they hit 25 or 26 it is ok to pitch them over 100+ pitches per game, right?

Thx,
jonpfl

Actually I suggested that Markus automatically use minor league pitchers under 100 pitches and he did that. After 25 the injury effect for pitching over 100 pitches is much less.

yea yea this !! :D

Thanks Cody for the time and effort you have put into this.
Theres no doubt in my mind if I would have seen videos like these about earlier versions I'm sure I would of bought 5 or 6 years instead of just a few weeks ago !!
Do hope you have time for more in the future.
Take care.

Donevyn 04-30-2012 03:06 PM

Thanks soooo much Cody. I needed something like this last year!!:D

Really appreciate your time, effort and great articulation of those things OOTP.

cody8200 05-12-2012 08:43 AM

Thanks guys for your nice comments. After taking a couple of weeks off, I plan on doing one or two more of these soon. Any specific areas you'd like to see covered, just let me know and I'll do my best.

Have you covered Associations and/or Real Time simulations? Sorry, admittedly I have not watched all of them in entirety.

The videos are a great help. Greatly appreciate your time.
I would leave it up to your judgement what areas of the game a video would help. Thank you!

I would like to see you revisit Finances and various issues that may crop up while managing a teams finances. I can't figure out why invariably, I end up with no money for free agents or extenstions even when my projected budget room and cash are all positive.

Thanks for all your help with the great videos!

reddawg 05-13-2012 01:39 AM

Hi Cody, wow thanks for asking for opinions on what might come next.
Heres my thought and of course I'm still very new at ootp, so keeping that in mind how about a video on like tips, tricks and hints so to speak.
Maybe about other ways to navigate around all the different screens (short cuts) or maybe just showing all the many different info screens, maybe hints on setting up a league.
I guess just what it says, tips, tricks n hints.

thanks again Cody from us newbies :thumbup1:

Errol1967 05-19-2012 09:05 AM

I'm new to this game and I must say it's verry complexed, but thanks to Cody, who makes an awsome video, I start to learn this game..I'm btw from Holland and love baseball.

Cheeersss

Having been away from OOTP since OOTP5 I have to say thank you for these videos. :)

jhenry 06-02-2012 12:12 PM

How do you get the real team logos and nicknames to be in effect?

I tried downloading add-on and installing but it did not seem to work.

What am I missing?
