2000s Champions League

1 Attachment(s)
Attachment 535795I am finally going to attempt something I have wanted to do with OOTP for quite some time.
I am going to try a historical league featuring the top teams of the 2000s (2000-16).
For the most part, each franchise will be represented by their best showing in terms of postseason advancement.
Meaning World Series championship teams would be the first choice, followed by World Series runners-up, League championship series runners-up and so-on.
Ties were broken based on regular season record.
However, there are a couple of occasions where I have picked a team other than who should be the qualifier. I will give a brief explanation after the team list.
The teams will play current major league rules, 162 games, with interleague play and World Series home field goes to best record. There will be no trades allowed, but the teams will have their minor league systems.
American League East
2012 Baltimore Orioles – 96-66 – Lost division series
2004 Boston Red Sox – 98-64 – World Series champions
2009 New York Yankees – 103-59 – World Series champions
2008 Tampa Bay Rays – 97-65 – Lost World Series
2015 – Toronto Blue Jays – 93-69 – Lost division series
American League Central
2016 Cleveland Indians – 94-67 – Lost World Series
2005 Chicago White Sox – 99-63 – World Series champions
2006 Detroit Tigers – 95-67 – Lost World Series
2015 Kansas City Royals – 95-67 –World Series champions
2006 Minnesota Twins – 96-66 – Lost division series*
American League West
2003 Los Angeles Angels – 99-63 – World Series champions
2004 Houston Astros – 92-70 – Lost NL championship series*
2002 Oakland Athletics – 103-59 – Lost division series*
2001 Seattle Mariners – 116-46 – Lost championship series
2011 Texas Rangers – 96-66 – Lost World Series

National League East
2002 Atlanta Braves – 101-59 – Lost division series*
2003 Miami Marlins – 91-71 --- World Series champions
2008 Philadelphia Phillies – 92-70 – World Series champions
2006 New York Mets – 97-75 – Lost championship series*
2012 Washington Nationals – 96-64 – Lost division series

National League Central
2016 Chicago Cubs – 103-58 – World Series champions
2012 Cincinnati Reds – 97-65 – Lost division series
2011 Milwaukee Brewers – 96-66 – Lost championship series
2015 Pittsburgh Pirates – 98-64 – Lost wild-card game*
2004 St. Louis Cardinals – 105-57 – Lost World Series*

National League West
2001 Arizona Diamondbacks – 92-70 – World Series champions
2007 Colorado Rockies – 90-73 – Lost World Series
2013 Los Angeles Dodgers – 92-70 – Lost championship series*
2006 San Diego Padres – 88-74 – Lost division series
2012 San Francisco Giants – 94-68 – World Series champions
There are eight teams I went outside of the criteria for my choice.
The 2006 Minnesota Twins fell in the division series but had a better record than the 2002 team which did. It also featured huge seasons from Justin Morneau and Joe Maurer.
The 2017 Houston Astros were not available and I choose the 2004 team, which lost in the NLCS to the Cardinals, over the 2005 team, which got swept by the White Sox in the World Series, because Jeff Bagwell did not play as significant a role in 2005 and I wanted to see him in this league. The Astros were placed in the AL because that is where they currently play and it balanced the leagues.
The 2002 Oakland Athletics fell in the division series but had a better record than the 2006 team which did. It also features Barry Zito, Mark Mulder and Tim Hudson at their peak.
The 2002 Atlanta Braves lost in the division series but had a much better record (101 wins to 88) than the 2001 team which did. The 2001 team also features Glavine and Maddux in the rotation and Smoltz in the bullpen. Smoltz pitched in 2001, he closed in 2002, but was coming off Tommy John and was limited.
The 2006 New York Mets had a better record (97-65) than the 2001 (94-68) and 2015 (90-72) teams, which both made the World Series. Its lineup also features Carlos Delgado, David Wright and Carlos Beltran with huge seasons.
With a record of 105-57, the 2004 St. Louis Cardinals were a much better team than World Series championship teams of 2006 (83-78) and 2011 (90-72). They just happened to run into a freight train disguised as the Boston Red Sox in the World Series. A life-long Cardinals fan going back to the early 1970s, the best Cardinals team I have seen, including the Herzog era.
The 2015 Pittsburgh Pirates (98-64) posted the best record of their three playoff teams in this era. They lost in the wild-card game to the Chicago Cubs.
The 2017 Los Angeles Dodgers were not available for this league, so I went with the 2013 team that lost in the NLCS to the Cardinals. It did not have the best record (92-70) of their four NLCS qualifiers in this era, that goes to the 2009 team which went 95-67, but I liked the fact Kershaw, Ryu and Greinke went a combined 45-21 and Kenley Jansen had a 1.88 ERA out of the pen.
I also was tempted to pick the 2002 San Francisco Giants just to get Barry Bonds into the mix, but I could not look past the three titles SFG has won in the 2010s.
How I play: I will be managing/running the 2004 St. Louis Cardinals. I expect to play all 162 games. I sim the first five innings and play things out from there. I will try to post as many of my boxscores as I can and maybe league standings, league leaders, stats, emails and other important news at the end of the night.
Feel free to comment or add suggestions.

Cardinals report to spring training

Attachment 535796
The 2004 St. Louis Cardinals have reported to their Roger Dean Stadium spring training complex in Jupiter, Fla., to begin preparations for competing in the 2000s Champions League.
The only major difference I can see is that Larry Walker will be with the team from the get-go, rather than being acquired in a mid-season trade with the Colorado Rockies.

Preseason predictions

I did nothing to sway this, but the pressure is on.
The preseason predictions have the Cardinals going 107-55, don't think I can live up to that against this competition but anything in the 90s would be nice.
