Facts and More Facts

In 1971, Major League Baseball seen fourteen "20" or more game winners including 8 that reached 20 wins. The pitcher with the most wins in 1971 was 30 year old Mickey Lolich of the Detroit Tigers. Lolich was not a 20 game before in his career, he had 19 in 1969 and in his 2nd season as a 23 year old had 18. Initially right handed, Lolich damaged his right arm when he tipped a motorcycle on himself. As a result Mickey became a southpaw. In 1971 Lolich completed 29 of his 45 starts while pitching 376 innings. Lolich got to 20 wins on August 21st, 1971 when he and the Tigers beat the Brewers 7-2 with a complete game 6 hitter.

Canadian born pitcher Fergie Jenkins was 24-13 with a 2.77 ERA in 39 starts for the Chicago Cubs in 1971. It was Fergie's 5th straight season with 20 or more wins. Jenkins won the NL Cy Young that season, he finished his career in 1983 with over 3000 Ks. He also became the first Canadian born Hall of Famer. Not one to work around hitters, Jenkins had 263 Ks in 1971 while only walking 37.

Oakland Athletics Vida Blue had just 10 MLB starts prior to the 1971 season, he had 3 career wins. The 22 year old made a name for himself during his 3rd season going 24-8 with a 1.82 ERA in 39 starts which earned him the 1971 AL Cy Young. After losing his 1st start of the season, Blue won his next 8 starts and was 8-1 with a 1.02 ERA on May 9th after a 2-1 complete game win over the Orioles eventually leading the Athletics to a post season berth. Despite the great on field season, tension between Blue and owner Charlie Finley mounted when the owner requested Vida to change his middle name to "True". Finley even went as far as having the score board read "True Blue" and asked the radio and TV announcers to refer to him by his nickname... all in the sake of marketing. The Finley and Blue feud will continue in the off season.
Attachment 624161

Chicago White Sox lefty Wilbur Wood was another addition to the "20 game" winner club. The 29 year old finished the 1971 season with a 22-13 record with a 1.91 ERA in 42 starts. It was Wood's first 20 game win season and his first season with more then 8 starts as he was used as a reliever for the first 10 years of his career. Wood would go onto get 3 more 20 game seasons between 1972-74. The White Sox used Wood in the bull-pen a few times to start the season, but he eventually won his first game of the season on May 2nd, a 3-1 victory of the Senators. Wood won his 20th game on September 12th, his 37th start of the year. The knuckleballer credits much of his success to Hall of Famer, Hoyt Wilhelm. Although Wood had thrown a knuckleball for 20 years, it was his spring training in 1966 with the help of Wilhelm that Wood would start using the pitch with confidence. Manager Chuck Tanner began using him as a starter and Wood started over 40 games for 5 straight seasons.

Athletics Catfish Hunter was another pitcher getting his first 20 win season. The 25 year old finished 21-11 with a 2.96 ERA in 37 starts for Oakland. Hunter would win over 20 games the next four seasons as well. Hunters start to the 1971 season was not a strong one. After 3 starts Hunter was 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA, but then he got hot. Reeling off 8 wins over his next 8 starts, Hunter improved to 8-2 with a 2.92 ERA. Catfish also finished the season strong going 5-0 over his last 7 starts allowing 8 ERs over 54 innings. A hunting accident in 1963 nearly dislodged his career, his brothers shotgun accidently fired putting over 40 pellets in "Jimmy's" foot . He lost a small toe and still had many pellets remain in his foot, but Hunter did not let that set back his career.

For his career, he is 200-119 with a 2.76 ERA in 396 games including 358 starts.

Cleveland Indians C Ray Fosse was named the AL Player of the Week. The 24 year old is hitting .303 with 10 HRs and 41 RBIs in 74 games. Last year, Fosse hit .307 with 18 HRs and 61 RBIs in 120 games for the Indians.

Chicago Cubs LF Billy Williams was named the NL Player of the Week. The 33 year old is hitting .339 with 23 HRs and 67 RBIs in 79 games. Last season, Williams hit .322 with 42 HRs and 129 RBIs in 161 games for the Cubs.

This Weeks Major Transactions

The Atlanta Braves have released SP Hoyt Wilhelm. The 48 year old is 0-0 with 1 save, a 1.80 ERA in 6 games. Last year, Wilhelm was 6-5 with 13 saves, a 3.40 ERA in 53 games for the Braves and Cubs. Wilhelm led the league in 1952 and 1953 for games, with ERA in 1959 with a 2.19 and games finished with 39 in 1953. Wilhelm is a 5 time All Star. The knuckle-baller only had one significant injury over his career and ironically it was a pitching machine that injured his hand during bunting practice.

Its looks like it will be the end of the line for SP Dick Ellsworth as the Milwaukee Brewers released him. The 31 year old is 0-0 with 1 save, a 3.00 ERA in 10 games. Last year, Ellsworth was 3-3 with 3 saves, a 3.79 ERA in 43 games including 1 start. It has been suggested that nagging elbow injuries or various other ailments, but Ellsworth was no where near the pitcher he was in early to mid 1960's when he was routinely throwing over 200 innings. For his career, Ellsworth is 115-136 with 6 saves, a 3.70 ERA in 406 games including 310 starts. Ellsworth was 22-10 with a 2.11 ERA in 1963 with the Cubs in 37 starts.

Facts and More Facts

The 1971 season in the real world saw the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Baltimore Orioles in 7 games to win the World Series title with Pirates Roberto Clemente being the series MVP. Willie Mays hits career major league leading 22nd extra innings HR in June and Rick Wise pitches a no-hitter and hits 2 HRs in a 4-2 June win over the Reds, it was the 2nd time the Reds were no-hit at home in June. As well in August, the Athletics beat the Angels 1-0, but it took 20 innings for the longest shutout in AL history. Phillies pitcher Rick Wise hits 2 more HRs including a Grand Slam in a 7-3 win over the Giants. On September 1st, the Pirates start an All-Black line-up (Stennett 2b, Clines cf, Clemente rf, Stargell lf, Sanguillen c, Cash 3b, Oliver 1b, Hernandez ss Ellis sp). In his 1st MLB game, Astros SP J R Richard strikes out 15 to beat the Giants. As well in September, Jim Palmer becomes the 4th Orioles starter with 20 wins on the season, the others were Dave McNally, Mike Cuellar and Pat Dobson. Bruised and battered Expos Ron Hunt gets plunked for the 50th time in 1971 on September 29th and the Washington Senators leave the MLB with a bang as fans storm onto the field in the 9th with 2 out in their last home game but have to forfeit a 7-5 lead. The Senators moved to become in the Texas Rangers in 1972.

Some other interesting facts during the 1971 season are......

St Louis Cardinals Lou Brock had a 26 game hitting streak stretch from April 30th to May 30th where he hit .429 (48/112) with 1 HR and 9 RBIs.

Four players hit 3 HRs during a game, 2 of them wore the black and yellow of the Pirates. Willie Stargell did it twice, both times in April, Pirates Bob Robinson also had 3 on October 3rd. Tigers Bill Freehan and Phillies Deron Johnson were the others.

Sixteen times during the 1971 season did a player achieve 5 hits, but only once did someone get 6 hits.... that was Cubs ss Don Kessinger during a 7-6 10 inning win over the Cardinals in June. Kessinger had 5 singles and a double during the win. It was Kessinger's lead off single in the 10th that eventually he scored on for the win.

In May, the Senators did not want to having anything to do with Red Sox LF Carl Yastrzemski. Yaz was walked 5 times and had single in his only other plate appearance in a 6-5 11 inning win by the Senators. Yastrezemski had a single in the 1st and was walked his next 5 at bats.

Shaking in their boots.... 4 hitters were given 3 intentional walks in a game during the 1971 season. Braves Hank Aaron, Pirates Gene Alley, Tigers Bill Freehan and Cardinals Joe Torre were being avoided by MLB pitchers during games.
Attachment 625415

In July, Angels LF Billy Cowan would have begged for a intentional pass. Cowan was 0 for 8 while fanning 6 times in that infamous 20 inning 1-0 marathon that the Athletics won. Cowan hitting 4th in the Angels line-up, struck out in the 11th with a runner at 2nd and struck out 3 times to lead off an inning.

Like the Super Hero "Flash", Royals CF Amos Otis was using his speed for the greater good when he swiped 5 bases in September in a 4-3 win over the Brewers. Otis who was 4 for 4 with all singles stole 2nd 4 times ad 3rd once. In the Royals 7th, Otis hit a 2-out single, stole 2nd, stole 3rd and scored on the throw to 3rd by Brewers Darrell Porter to make the score 4-3.

It was mentioned earlier that Expos 2B Ron Hunt got hit by a pitch 50 times in 1971, he was hit multiple times in 6 games during the season. No other MLB player got hit by a pitch more then once during a game that year.

New York Mets SP Tom Seaver went on a scoreless streak of 31.2 innings from August 6th-21st during the year. Over those 4 starts he was 3-0 and the only no decision game was a 10 inning effort in a 12 inning 1-0 loss to the Padres when he struck out 14. Athletics reliever Rollie Fingers went 30.2 innings from May 21st to July 15th without giving up a run. Seaver's streak exceeding his 27 inning streak earlier in the season that started in the 4th inning of the opening day game against the Expos until the 7th inning of a game against the Reds on April 21st.

There were 3 no hitters during the 1971 season. Cubs Ken Holtzman had a no hitter on June 3rd in a 1-0 win over the Reds. Holtzman did walk 4 and struck out 6 over 9 innings. We mentioned Phillies Rick Wise did the deed against the Reds a few weeks later, and Wise was the offensive hero in that game as well. Veteran Cardinals pitcher Bob Gibson had the 3rd no hitter in 1971. On August 14th Gibson struck out 10 in a 11-0 win over the Pirates as all the no-no's took place on the road. There were 17 1-hitters during the year including Royals Dick Drago's 1-0 loss to the Orioles. Frank Robinson hit a solo HR with 2-out in the 1st to wreck Drago's gem.

We mentioned Astros J R Richards 15 strikeout effort in September in his debut, but there were 4 more 15 + strikeout games including Athletics Vida Blue's 17 Ks on July 9th that infamous 1-0 win over the Angels in 20 innings. Blue gave up 7 hits and faced 40 batters over 11 innings while not walking a soul. Interesting was that Rollie Fingers came in for the next 7 innings allowing 2 hits and striking out 7 more. For the game, the Angels struck out 26 times in 72 plate appearances. There must have been good air circulation during the game as the Athletics struck out a total of 17 times themselves.

During the 60-70's a lot of pitchers were called upon to go a complete game 9 innings, but during the 1971 season, there were 26 pitchers that went 10 or more innings during a start. During the first game of a double header on September 24th, the Padres and Astros went 21 innings before the visiting Astros won 2-1. What was remarkable about the game was the starting pitching. Astros SP Ken Forsch went 13 innings allowing 6 hits and struck out 8 while Padres SP Clay Kirby lasted 15 innings allowing 8 hits and striking out 15. In case your wondering after the 5:25 time of game in the 1st, the second game lasted just 2:15 and appeared to be going extras when Padres OF Ollie Brown's 1-out walk off single sent the 6339 Padre fans home happy.
Attachment 625416

Senators SP Denny McLain had a couple of disastrous starts back to back. On June 16th, McLain lasted just 3 innings giving up 5 hits, but all of them were of the 4-bagger variety. All 5 HRs were solo shots against the Athletics as Joe Rudi hit 2, Mike Epstein hit 2 and Dave Duncan hit the other in a 5-0 win over McLain's Senators. In McLain's next start on June 21st, Denny lasted 8 innings but he gave up 16 hits but this time no HRs in a 7-2 loss to the Orioles. The 5 HRs and 16 hits were the MLB highs for 1971.

"Just a little outside"....... sometimes it's not following through in your motion, other times its just missing and other times its the umpires "postage stamp" sized strike zone, but 3 major leaguers issued 10 walks in a game. On May 18th in a 7-3 win, Sam McDowell issued 10 free passes over just 6 innings. McDowell did walk the 2nd-4th hitters a total of 6 times and since he won lets call it strategically. On July 3rd, Cardinals lefty Steve Carlton needed just 5.2 innings to give up 10. Carlton also gave up 6 hits and 7 ERs and fell to 11-5 with a 10-1 loss to the Giants. Giants LF Bernie Williams had 4 of them, he had only 17 more career walks over his 101 other career MLB games. Finally Expos SP Ernie McAnally accomplished the feat, in defeat with a 6-4 loss to the Phillies McAnally lasted 8.2 innings giving up 5 hits and stuck out 7. Interesting enough, McAnally entered the 9th with a 4-2 lead, gave up 3 walks in the ninth with 2 hits to take the loss.

Keep them on their toes.......... 4 pitchers had plunked 3 batters during the 1971 season. Senators Pete Brobert, Phillies Jim Bunning, Pirates Bruce Kison and Mets Nolan Ryan. Kison did it in game 4 of the World Series against the Orioles. Kison entered the game with 2 outs in the 1st and the Pirates down 3-0 and he allowed just 4 base runners over 6.1 innings, 3 of them got on base the hard way. The Pirates came back and won 4-3. The other was Mets Nolan Ryan and with his fastball I suspect that it was not a pleasant night for Braves hitters as the Mets handed them a 6-2 loss.

Montreal Expos SP Bill Stoneman used control to accomplish the Expos 1st ever no-hitter in 1969, but it was a lack of control that brings Stoneman's name to the fore-front in 1971. On September 26th in a 7-1 loss to the Cardinals, Stoneman and rookie C Terry Humphrey could not get on the same page. Over 6 innings Stoneman issued 4 of his 8 wild pitches during the season. Two of those 4 wild ones were thrown in the Cardinals 1st inning. Stoneman also has the distinction of being the only MLB pitcher to have been called for 2 balks in a game on September 5th in a 8-2 loss to the Pirates. He balked both times to the same batter after Reggie Stennett led off the game with a single. Stennett scored on Ty Clines fielders choice.

And that folks is what made 1971 the year it was.
