Basketball Cap Rules Help

So i'm just curious about the cap rules in basketball. I know the cap doesn't matter when resigning your own players. I believe you get taxed after you go over the cap, just like MLB.

So my question is, if you have players injured the whole season. Would that free up the cap space?

What i'm curious is if the warriors were to max out Klay and KD, if they sit out the whole season injured, does that free up the space for the warriors?

If the cap space is free couldn't they, in theory, use that cap space to sign a max player off the free agent market? Then have an even better team the year after?

This stems from the report of KD/Klay out all next season and the warriors wanting to sign them to max deals. Also i'm hoping this isn't a possibility as I'm not a fan of superteams.

No, I believe if they were to sign both of them to max deals, they would count against the salary cap even if they sit out the season. Injured players count against the cap.

This is correct
Almost all NBA contracts are guaranteed money unlike the NFL. You do sometimes see players take a non guaranteed last year of a deal but it usually comes with some sort out buy out clause where they get something for it.

And here is a good website to educate yourself about the NBA's CBA

Don't they have injury exceptions?

It is very complicated

And I think it's for players already under contact.
Thompson's contract runs out on June 30th.
Durant has a player option for next season which I think he will decline.
He will get the max anyways.

So if you were to sign a player already with an injury I don't think you could then claim the exception.
