Heartland Baseball League - Grand Championship Preview

The following preview was written by the AFBL's team representative.

The Heartland Baseball League is a 12 team, fictional, stats only league based in the US midwest region. We are entering out 20th season. The Commissioner, who does not run a team, keeps detailed All-Star, post-season, and Hall of Fame history not found in any other OOTP online league.

Looked for the best values I could find in the draft pool. I feel like there are enough solid players to spend a little on quality starters and even splurge on Burton Robison. Hope I have enough heavy hitters to do damage to the rotations we will face. The team will need the boys in the back on the lineup to get on base regularly and the relievers to do enough to squeeze out some close wins.

5 Keys to Winning:

1. Quality Starts – The starting rotation has plenty of solid players. The team is going to need them to consistently keep the run counts low and eat up innings. The relievers are decent, but not strong enough to handle long outings. The starters will need to hang in there against some strong lineups.

2. Chicks Dig the Long Ball – With players like Jim Holmes, Rex Robertson, Burton Robison, Nelson Cruz, and Arturo Rivera in the lineup it is hard to imagine that there won’t be a fair number of balls leaving the yard. The expectation is that the power in this lineup will generate enough dingers to bring runs home.

3. Hold Down the Fort – We don’t have the lockdown closer in the pen. That said, Ken Bell and Robinson Garza should be good enough to hold down the opposition and keep us in close games. If not, it will be a short tournament.

4. Wear Down the Oppositions Arms – There may be power in the lineup, but it won’t matter if there is nobody on base to bring home. The rest of the lineup needs to see a high number of pitches and get on base to generate runs.

5. Love the Glove – The starting rotation is solid, but they will be facing All-Star lineups regularly. Most of the defense is pretty solid with the glove so it’s hoped that a few Web Gems occur when balls do make it to the infield.
