06/20/1976 - Giants Stymie New York, Take 3-1 Win
 
With the exception of a hanging curveball to former teammate Dave Kingman that left the yard, RHP Ed Halicki never let New York get something going. The San Francisco right-hander commanded his fastball in pitching the Giants to a 3-1 win. Randy Moffitt was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 7 of 8 save opportunities. The Giants bumped their record to 36-32 with this latest triumph.

Gary Thomasson chipped in for San Francisco with a 2-run home run in the top of the sixth. For the game, the first baseman had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 2 RBI.

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Mets, 15-14. Earning player of the game honors was first baseman Dave Kingman, who went 4 for 5 with 2 home runs, 2 singles, and a walk. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. His homers came off RHP John Denny and RHP Steve Waterbury.

Tom Walker, credited with the save, is now 2 for 2 in save opportunities. The Cardinals improve their record to 32-36 with the win over New York.

Joe Ferguson, who is tied for 7th in the NL with a .478 slugging percentage, chipped in for St. Louis with a grand slam home run in the bottom of the first. For the game, the catcher had 3 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 2 singles, 2 runs scored, and 4 runs batted in.

New York Mets starter Tom Seaver was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the Chicago Cubs, 5-1. Seaver picked up the win for New York, going 7 innings. He gave up 1 run on 5 hits. He now sports a record of 8-9. Bob Apodaca converted his 11th save in 15 tries.

The Mets got a big at-bat from second baseman Wayne Garrett. For the game, Garrett went 1-2 with 2 walks. He drove in 2 runs. In the bottom of the sixth, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, he stroked a 2-run single. His 70th hit of the season gave New York a 3-1 lead.

"We'll grab a cold one tonight and go after another win tomorrow," Garrett said.

New York Mets starter Bob Myrick turned in a top-notch performance against the Houston Astros at Astrodome. The result was a win for the Mets, 7-2. Myrick went 5.1 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. His record improves to 3-2. Houston has now lost 4 consecutive games.

Atlanta right fielder Jim Wynn made his presence felt in the 9-3 Braves triumph over the New York Mets. Wynn was 3 for 5 with a double and 2 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. Phil Niekro got the win, improving to 9-5. He pitched 9 innings, giving up 6 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 6 and walking 6. Atlanta is now 38-47, New York 42-46.

Wynn had a big at-bat with a runner on 1st in the bottom of the fifth inning, when he hit a run-scoring double. The Braves went on to win.

"Nice to see our side come away with the win," Wynn said after the game.

Kingman homered off RHP Phil Niekro late in the contest.

07/17/1976 - Espinosa, Kingman Stop Houston
 
"That was one of my best outings," said Nino Espinosa. "I was worried a lot in the bullpen. My ball wasn't quite right. Luckily, it can be two different worlds -- the bullpen and the game. Once I stepped on the field, it all fell into place."

It was an impressive start for the Mets hurler. He blanked the Astros 1-0 on a strong 4-hitter while ringing up 4 strikeouts and doling out no walks.

Mets first baseman Dave Kingman spoiled the pitcher's duel with a solo shot off RHP Dan Larson, and Espinosa made it stick.

In 18 starts this season Espinosa has fashioned a 6-9 record and a 4.20 ERA.

Montreal got a terrific performance from pitcher Don Carrithers, but it wasn't enough to beat the New York Mets. New York won the Shea Stadium contest, 9-4. Carrithers was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 6 innings of 4-hit ball. New York reliever Rick Baldwin got the win, raising his record to 3-1. Dale Murray was tagged with the loss. The Mets bumped their record to 56-52 with this latest triumph.

A crucial at-bat came with runners on 1st and 2nd and one out in the bottom of the eighth inning. That's when catcher John Stearns drew a walk. The Mets went on to win.

"Getting a lot of baserunners and getting some timely hits, it's a good combination," said Stearns.

Kingman had a homer off RHP Don Carrithers.

New York left fielder John Milner had a 3-RBI game, which helped his team beat the Montreal Expos, 6-4. New York reliever Craig Swan got the win, raising his record to 4-2. Dan Warthen was tagged with the loss. The Mets bumped their record to 57-52 with this latest triumph.

Milner had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the 12th. On a 3-1 sinker from Dan Warthen, he banged a 2-run home run to left, giving the Mets a 6-4 lead. It was the 10th home run of the year for Milner.

"We took advantage of our opportunities," Milner told the New York Today. "It's as simple as that."

Kingman had staked the Mets to a lead with a 3-run blast in the first off RHP Dennis Blair.

New York improves to 59-53 with the win. They lead their division by 3 games.

"We swung the bats good throughout the lineup," said New York skipper .

He scored 3 times and drove in 4. New York starter Jon Matlack was credited with the win after throwing 93 pitches over 9 innings. His record now stands at 13-6. New York has 3 straight wins, San Diego 3 straight losses.

Joe Torre of the Mets was unstoppable in today's 5-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Shea Stadium. He battered them for 5 hits in 5 at-bats.

"Boy, I was on the mark today," said the New York third baseman after the game. "I could see the ball real well. It's a great feeling to do this. And besides, 5-for-5 won't hurt your batting average like 0-for-5 will."

Joe Torre singled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, singled in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

Thus far this year Torre has hit .282 with 4 home runs and 35 RBIs

Kingman homered off RHP Jim Lonborg.
