Swap a player from 25 man active roster with 40 man roster

I currently have 37/40 filled in my 40 man roster. I just picked up a player that I want to move from my 40 man roster to my active roster. I'm trying to figure out how to just swap the player from the active roster with the guy in the 40 man roster. Is this possible or do I have to option the guy from the active roster to the minors?

You have to option (or outright/DFA) the guy from the active roster first.

both players were out of minor league options so it looks like I had to put the guy from my active roster on irrevocable waivers...
