Four Times Rarer Than a No-Hitter (Or Hitting for the Cycle)
 

On Friday the 13th, Cubs reliever Michael Wuertz entered the game in the 5th inning with none out and the bases loaded and struck out the side. This feat has been accomplished only 27 times since 1960. Unfortunately, the Cubs had already given up six runs in that inning and went on to lose the game. Wuertz wasn't really familiar to me, but his impressive peripherals lead one to believe that a future as a closer should be on the horizon. This should raise his profile among baseball fans considerably.

I believe that Mark Lowe (Mariners) walked the bases loaded in his major league debut last year and then proceeded to strike out the next three batters.

Interesting. I was definitely wrong, but both Wikipedia and another site have the 'struck out the side' story. An article from the local paper confirms that it was 2 strikeouts and a force out at the plate.

"It was easy to miss, given that the game was completed over two days, but in the Brewers/Marlins tilt that started Tuesday and was completed on Wednesday, Prince Fielder went 4-for-4, and walked three times (twice intentionally). You don’t see a guy reach base seven times in one game all that often.

You definitely don’t see a guy reach base seven times in one game without scoring a single run, yet that’s what Fielder did. True, two of his walks were intentional, but that still meant he reached base five times of his own accord, once on a double, and yet his teammates could not drive him in even once. Bill Hall and Johnny Estrada, the two batters behind him in the lineup, combined to go 2-for-13.

Interesting coincidence as BB Prospectus's minor league guru Kevin Goldstein profiled Dewon Day in his article today. Thinks Day has a shot, "a late bloomer," despite being 27 and pitching in AA. Dewon was almost 23 when drafted and then had his development delayed further by Tommy John surgery in 2004.

Over the past two seasons (2005-2006), only Ryan Howard and Brian Giles have accomplished this feat whilst 37 players had the traditional 5/5 performance.

A: a 6-for-6 game with 1 walk?

A: a 4-for-4 game with 3 walks?

how about a 10-for-10 game, I bet those are EXTREMLY rare?
