BIG GUNS IN THE NIRL SECOND DIVISION
There a wealth of talent in the North Island Recreational League Second Division... the NIRL is the home of the Island's all-time old schoolers, who are getting a new lease on life, playing baseball like they did years ago at their high schoolS... and the old dudes still can play ball... they are filling up all the ballparks around the league every Sunday afternoon.

One of the biggest guns in the Second Divison is 31-year-old double-barrelled Allen Buchanan... he is 8-2 for first place Dutton with a 2.39 ERA... he has started all 10 Coyote games with 8 complete games... pitched 83 innings with 43 Ks and 22 walks... that ought to be enough, however Buchanan is also batting .355 with 2 doubles and 6 RBIs.

The second standout on the hill is Jackson's Jalen McCoy with a 4-2 mark and a 2.47 ERA... he is far and away the top strikeout pitcher... McCoy tops the Second Division with 77 strikeouts in 73 innings... McCoy has 7 complete games in his 10 starts and has issued 29 bases on balls... the Jackalopes are tied for second place with a 6-4 record.

The third best pitcher in the Second Divison is Andy Meadows, age 39... after all these years, he's still going strong with the Kinston Firebirds... he is 4-4 in 10 starts with 5 complete games and a 2.92 ERA... Meadows had fanned 41 in his 80 innings with just 22 walks... the Firebirds are 5-5 and in the fourth spot in the league standings.

And now for the big guns with the big booming bats:
Leading the league with a .462 BA is right fielder Billy Mann of Jackson... he has 6 doubles, 1 home run, 5 RBIs, 5 runs and 3 stolen bases.

It's been a dismal year so far for last place Theodore (2-8), but first baseman Jeffrey Tompkins has more than done his part with a league-leading 11 RBIs... he has 3 doubles, 1 triple and has scored 6 runs.

Jackson left fielder Dan Darragh is second in ribbies with 9... he is hitting .293 with 3 doubles, a homer and 6 runs scored.

Kinston first sacker Matt Herting is going strong with a .362 batting average, 5 two-baggers, 1 roundtripper, 8 RBIs, 7 runs and 2 stolen bases.

Dutton's first baseman Peter Wallace isn't hitting his weight yet, but the 215 pounder is doing quite a bit of damage with 8 RBIs, 9 runs, 2 doubles and 4 stolen bases.... Wallace is batting only .214.

Another batter in the same boat is Wallace's teammate Coy Baker... the right fielder is batting only .243, but has 8 RBIs, leads the league with 10 runs and has 2 doubles and 2 homers.

Kinston catcher Calvin Robbins is batting .297 with 4 doubles, 2 HR, 6 ribbies and 10 runs scored.

All the rest of the big bats are hitting over the .300 mark... Jackson center fielder Freddie Barton sports a .364 BA with 4 RBIs and 6 runs.

Joliet third baseman Benny Sartaine is hitting at a .350 pace with 1 homer, 5 RBIs and 5 runs for the fifth place Green Giants (3-7).

Jackson first sacker Tommy Warner has a .348 average with 3 doubles, 1 home runs, 6 runs batted in and has scored 9 times.

West Chester first baseman Lynn Burgess is batting .325 with 2 doubles, 7 RBIs and 3 runs scored... the Comets (6-4) are tied for second place.

and last, but not necessarily least, is Sal Cuccinelli, left fielder for the Kinston Firebirds... he is carrying a .306 BA with 5 two-baggers, 7 RBIs and has scored 3 runs.

HACKERS, KINGS CLASH SUNDAY
Big game tomorrow afternoon at Hilltop Stadium in Union Heights... the co-leaders of the NIRL First Division will tangle for the top spot... the hometown Hackers will host the sizzling Kofa Kings, who are on a 5-game winning streak... they are currently tied for first place with 6-4 records.

Unbeaten Jeff Davis (4-0/1.84 ERA) will be on the mound for Kofa, while Morgan Powell (4-2/1.34) will get the assignment for Union Heights.

UNION HEIGHTS FIRST IN FIRST DIVISION
The Union Heights Hackers took over first place in the NIRL First Division by a game, but it was no easy task... they just barely beat Kofa 2-1 and put and end to the Kings' 5-game winning streak... New Yerby and Stockdale are also tied with Kofa for the second spot... the Yanks walloped Wafford 9-4 and the Mustangs outscored last place Avalon 13-11 in a hitfest… only one and a half games separate first place from fifth place.

ever see a pitcher W that they just did not deserve? Carden's performance for Stockdale is definitely one of those.

Agree with you... the problem is that I sim the first six innings and then play out the last three innings.

I just didn't have a chance to take him out earlier... notice... I replaced him the next inning.

The runs came quickly... three of them on a homer by Alpert in the fifth.

But I did enjoy the game... I prefer a 13-11 barnburner to a 1-0 shutout... in real life at the stadium, I like to see them hit the ball and score runs... baseball has gotten boring with the "Strike Out or Home Run" mentality.

Baseball needs more action... If I were in control, I would cut the game to 3 balls and 2 strikes... you would go to bat with a 1-1 count... just like many slow-pitch softball leagues that are on a time limitation... this speeds up the game and make the hitters swing the bats... you would also be out if you fouled the ball on the third strike... this would certainly liven up the staid, old sport a bit... and it really wouldn't change the strategy that much... 1-1 didn't change the softball strategy much... this might cut 45 minutes to an hour off of a baseball game... 3-4 hours for the game is just too much for kids that have to go to school early and for the working folks, too.

I wish the Independent Leagues would try it... it would be interesting to see how it would affect the game.

KINSTON KNOCKS OFF DUTTON IN SECOND DIVISION
In North Island Recreational League action yesterday, third place Kinston socked it to first place Dutton 10-4... runner-up Jackson skimmed by hapless last place Theodore 3-2... and in another nailbiter, the fifth place jolly Green Giants of Joliet celebrated with a win over third place West Chester 2-1.
