What would you do?

I've got a team (the West Ham United Hammers) that I've committed to being a packs-only team from Day 1. We've had moderate success in Perfect (playoffs every 3 seasons or so, never really close to advancing to a Perfect League Series) but are in a serious relegation battle right now. I woke up this morning to 750 additional PP from a tournament, just enough to get me a pack.

The pack yielded this...

So, what should I do?

1. Keep him and roll with it for the remainder of the life of this version of the game.
2. Sell it and crack open about 800K worth of packs.
3. Abandon my vow for this to be a packs-only team, sell him, and stack the team for the last 10 weeks or so of the game.

What would you do?

Here's my team...

I must say, I'm leaning toward going back on my packs-only commitment and stacking this team for the stretch run.

Well for some reason my images aren't showing up, but the card was a PEAK Pedro Martinez, and my team is very, very average.

Magus978 01-23-2020 04:56 PM

I'd cash in and do a ton of packs. 800 packs *SHOULD* net you more than a few good to great things.

Id probably go route 1 or 3...leaning more towards 3 as you could put together quite the squad for 800k pp.

Odds are if you rip 800 more packs youll end up disappointed.

Don't bet on opening packs. Although the ODDS are you would get something good, you could just as easily blow the whole total. Packs are for what you did - take a wild chance you'll get a one-in-a-million shot.

Study the Auction House and see if you can get 2-3 players that would help the team - if not, then play Pedro to finish the season. It's too late in the game to worry about it too much.

I'm rolling with him for now. Maybe with like 3 weeks to go I'll get itchy and be in the mood to rip 800 packs just to see what the results are. I'm not going to trade him to play the AH just so I can stick to my vow to keep these guys packs only.

Wish I would have pulled this card for one of my other two, non-PO teams.

Last start he pitched 8 innings of two-hit ball with no walks and 9 Ks.

This.

Packs only is a commitment you make to yourself; "I know it's the slowest way possible, I know it will sometimes, even frequently, be painful. But I'm in no hurry to get there."

The challenge is playing with mismatched and incomplete teams, and managing to win anyway. Eventually.

You do grow weary of turning 1000 PP into 4 (duplicate) irons and a trash bronze hundreds of times.

I´d enjoy playing him for a season or two then turn my back on the packs only promise. Money changes everything you know. :)

Yeah, probably this. I'm enjoying him so far (relegation is in the rear-view now as I'm 6 games clear - not entirely because of Petey). But in the end, I'd love to see what I could build with the PP I'd get for him.

There is also something weirdly attractive about blowing through all those PP on just packs. I guess I could do maybe 30 Diamond packs then the rest regular. I've never opened a Diamond pack for any of my teams. I'm excited about the opportunity to get eight live Mookie Betts cards. (Of all the Diamonds I've received he's been my most frequent ... probably pulled him eight times.)

Thanks for the thoughts folks.

Was there an option to sell him to me for $600K? ;)

daves 01-24-2020 01:42 PM

Since you have been opening packs, how many great cards did you sell to open more packs? I’d keep him as your ACE.

However, if you do sell him, go to the AH rather than packs. With the saturation of super cards, like the POTD cards, there are real good cards at decent prices to improve your team and reach the Perfect level.

Keep it

Orion 01-24-2020 08:29 PM

Imo anything you pull from a pack, you can keep, even in a constricted team format? The name of the game here is fun, not puritanism.

I also endorse the "Mr Baseball" rule. You can have 1 wildcard anything you want guy on your pure Japanese team. :)

gemini615 01-24-2020 08:37 PM

You're a pack only team. Stick to your guns and use him to dominate until Ootp21 comes out.
Then sell him to some sucker.

Orion 01-24-2020 08:39 PM

Pack only, sure. He gets the best guy you can ever get from a pack or otherwise. Keep him!

trman73 01-26-2020 01:18 AM

Just to put a bow on this thread, here are Pedro's numbers for the year...

19 GS, 9-4 W-L, 2.38 ERA, 132.1 IP, 115 H, 3 HR (0.2/9), 17 BB (1.2/9), 149K (10.1/9), 0.99 WHIP, 6.4 WAR

That's a keeper!

You could sell it to Bailey, who would then give you a great deal on his trade-in Pedro! Have your cake and eat it, too.

bailey 02-16-2020 11:12 AM

Nice work. Your Peak Pedro knocked off the 18-time perfect champion, Orlando Shockers, in the wild card round. Now MY Peak Pedro makes his debut for Collingwood in Game 1 of the Division Series against you.:)

PocketsAintFull 02-16-2020 11:29 AM

Iiiiirrrrrrrroooons .

(Not suggesting playing iron cards, it’s a West Ham thing :p:laugh:)
