NHL grants Seattle 32nd team.

Hey guys. Today, Seattle will be the 32nd NHL team. The team will start playing in the 2021-22 season.

It also means that the Arizona Coyotes will move to the Central Division. It's the most logical. They been there before in their first 2 seasons.

You can see my signature for my reaction.

The NHL thinks its popularity is the same as the NFL's? Okay.

Fun fact: the NHL took in $500 million from Las Vegas as its expansion fee; it's going to collect $650 million from Seattle as the expansion fee. That's $1.15 billion dollars in fees over just two-and-a-half years.

And now you know the real reason for the expansions: a quick cash crab to line league coffers. This isn't new. The NHL did the same thing in 1991-93 when it added five new teams over three seasons and again in 1998-2000 when it added four teams over three seasons.

Let's see how the existing clubs (not to mention the new clubs) are fairing in six or seven seasons after the quick cash infusion dries up and the teams have to go back to relying on actual game revenue to survive.

I think both LV and Seattle will work as markets.
The NHL still has some trouble markets in Charlotte, Miami and Phoenix.

IMO the biggest hurdle will be getting back to a good TV deal. Unless you watch a local feed or are a hardcore fan and have league pass or whatever the NHL calls it, then it’s still too hard to find games that are of national importance.
Maybe it’s my youth telling me what was good but I do remember getting exciting for ESPN hockey night in Canada and their 2-3 national games of the week.
If you did not follow a certain team it was a great way to keep up with the league.

Compare it to the NBA where with basic cable (I think most packages have NBA TV now) you along with that, ABC, ESPN and Turner can watch 6-10 national games a week depending on the time of year.

Should of gave 32 Team to an East Coast City like Orlando or even Altanta back,Charlotte,New Orleans or Indiana. KC or Houston or OKC. Divisions need to be Geographical again and added a Midwest and Centraleast ones.

The NHL has some serious delusions of grandeur if it thinks it has the support to be as large as the NFL. (It's quite a reversal of history, since up until the late 1990s the NHL was always the smallest of the big four sports leagues. Now it will be tied with the largest.)

Real trouble, since they don't have a team.

Damnit I always do that. I don’t know why my brain thinks they are Charlotte when it always know they are based in Raleigh.

Professional Sports Teams might as well put .Inc after their name. It's just another business.

The demand for Sports memorabilia or anything with a cool team logo on it continues to grow.

The world population has grown by over 3 billion (7.58b by 2020) since 1980 (4.45b). It is expected to reach almost 10 billion by 2050.

Hire the right marketing team and you can make a buck just about anywhere.

Put the .Inc after the name, it's just another business. When it fails in one place, it moves to another - that's part of the global market we live in.

The NHL just made over $1B with 2 expansion teams in 4 years.

Lots of people heckle Bettman, me included at times, but he's grown the league, it is a big player on the market now. Might not be as big as MLB, NBA, NFL, but make no mistake, it is a big player now.

No doubt in some future time a lot of Pro teams will crumble, but right now pro sports is like any other commodity - run with it while it's hot - there's billions to be made.

Then Charlotte doesn't need a Team.

If so, they'll never win the Cup.

Jayson Stark says MLB should expand to 32 teams. Orlando didn't make story and got picked over when Tampa Bay got team,Rays have played Home Games their,Cracker Jack Stadium no need for one to be built, have lots of Theme Parks/OIA,UCF Knights Football Team undefeated last 2 years,Solar Bears won Turner Cup Championship,Magic/Predators have done good.

Is that the secret? When I read it, I thought I had a concussion.

If they don't move Arizona or Carolina to Quebec at some point, I'll be disappointed. Doubt if they move Florida, since they want the Miami market too much.

I suspect MLB will expand by a couple more teams in the next five years. NBA will probably follow suit, meaning we'll have 32-team leagues in the four biggest sports.
