odd end-of-season "tiebreaker" scenario

In a historical league where I'm using "as-played" schedules (and where I've inserted a few games during the last week of the season in order to make up rainouts, etc.), I had the following standings at the top of the AL for 1905:

Cleveland 91-63, .591
Philadelphia 86-63, .577

Despite the clear advantage for Cleveland, the game saw the need to schedule a one-game playoff, Cleveland at Philadelphia. Philly then won the one-game playoff, with the standings then looking like this:

Cleveland 91-64, .587
Philadelphia 87-63, .580

Neither team was given the "X" designation (to show it had clinched), and then the game scheduled the World Series with Cleveland as the AL's representative.

Anyone have any idea what the game was thinking? It's like the game validated the fact that the playoff wasn't needed when it sent Cleveland to the World Series despite losing the playoff game.

You could have scheduled a NYA@PHA makeup game to avoid the problem, right?
