Weather: 58 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 9 MPH wind blowing left to right
Attendance: 23,047

Top of the First:
Brian Mitchell leads off with a walk. Kim Springer pops a little hit to center. Enrique Ramos bloops a hit to left and Mitchell scores without a throw! 1 to 0, Beavers! Glenn Snowden draws a walk to load the bases up with no outs. Jeff Galka takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and forces in a run! 2 to 0, Beavers! Seems like we are getting a lot of RBI off walks and HBP this year! Tim Higbee grounds a hit to center and Ramos scores! 3 to 0, Beavers! P Tom Sayers says he is hurt... Just his feelings, I bet.... New Pitcher: Dave Reeder (28-R) with a 2.08 ERA in 4.1 IP. Career 2.81 ERA in 227.1 IP. Dave Risinger strikes out... Reid Reddick strikes out looking... P Steve Muir pops out to 2nd.

Bottom of the First:
Britt Snyder lines out to center. Vinny Negrete tries to bunt his way aboard, but the Gold Glover, P Steve Muir, makes the play, 1-3! Ed Holle swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to center. Charlie Allen grounds out to 2nd!

Top of the Second:
P Dave Reeder strikes out the top of our order in order.... He has now struck out 5 of the 6 batters he has faced; all except the pitcher...

Top of the 3rd:
Glenn Snowden manages to pop out, but Jeff Galka and Tim Higbee strike out... 7 SO for P Dave Reeder in 3 IP.

Top of the Fourth:
2 more strikeouts for P Dave Reeder... 9 in 4 IP.

Top of the Fifth:
Only 1 strikeout! But we still went down in order. 5 perfect innings for P Dave Reeder and 10 SO.

Top of the Sixth:
No strikeouts! But still we go down in order. 6 perfect innings and 10 SP for P Dave Reeder.

Top of the Seventh:

No strikeouts again, but another perfect inning. 7 of them by P Dave Reeder...

Bottom of the Seventh:

With 1 out, Jorge Prado grounds a hit up the middle. The Bullpen is up. A wild pitch sends Prado to 2nd. Javier Rodriguez walks. They pinch-hit for P Dave Reeder! Finally! PH Fernando Vargas (27-L) grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4, and Prado goes to 3rd. A wild pitch scores Prado... 3 to 1, Beavers. Britt Snyder draws a walk. Call to the Bullpen: Victor Alvarez (30-L). PH Clay David (30-S), 1 for 3 on the season and 0 for 2 in this series, clears the bases with a double to right... Tie Game: 3 to 3. Alvarez is officially worthless... Not just a slump, but useless... Ed Holle lines a hit to center and Snyder scores... 4 to 3, Angels. Call to the Bullpen: Rich Larkin (24-R). Holle tries to steal and C Tim Higbee throws him out!

Bottom of the Eighth:
Charlie Allen walks and Gregg Buckner grounds a hit to right... Rodolfo Rosado grounds one back to the mound, but P Rich Larkin makes a bad throw to 2nd and the bases are loaded with no outs... Jorge Prado takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to force in a run... 5 to 3, Angels. Call to the Bullpen: Sandy Bastianelli (29-R). Javier Rodriguez swings at a 3-2 pitch and beats out an infield hit and another run is in... 6 to 3, Angels. We need another Bullpen overhaul... Why cannot pitchers remain good from one season to the next for us? Fernando Vargas doubles to left center and 2 more runs score... 8 to 3, Angels. Britt Snyder strikes out and we finally have an out after 7 batters... PH Dave Balkan (27-R), 1 for 12 on the season (.083), grounds out to 3rd and the runners hold. Ed Holle grounds one to 1st and P Sandy Bastianelli, of course, drops the toss from Glenn Snowden for an error and another run scores... 9 to 3, Angels. Charlie Allen pokes a hit to right and another run scores and Holle goes to 3rd... 10 to 3, Angels. PH Tony Hewitt (30-R), 1 for 11 on the season (.091) beats out an infield hit and Holle scores... 11 to 3, Angels. Rodolfo Rosado lines a hit to center and in comes another one... 12 to 3, Angels. Jorge Prado ground out to short!!!!

Lost - 12 to 3

We had 3 hits (all in the 1st inning) and made 2 errors
Los Angeles had 12 hits (6 in the 8th) and made no errors

Steve Muir went 6.2 innings, allowed 3 runs 4 hits, 4 walks and struck out 1. He threw 2 WP.
LHP Victor Alvarez (L 0-1 BS 2) did not get and out and allowed a run and 2 hits.
RHP Rich Larkin got 1 out and allowed 4 runs (3 earned), 1 hit and 2 walks.
RHP Sandy Bastianelli went 1 inning, allowed 4 unearned runs, 5 hits and struck out 1.

Tom Sayers did not retire a batter, gave us 3 runs, 3 hits and 3 walks and did not strike out anyone.
RHP Dave Reeder (W 3-0) went 7 perfect innings and struck out 10.

RF Enrique Ramos had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI.

The Angels announced that Tom Sayers had a blister that should bother him for about a week....

Just pitiful....

Monday is an off day and we will make big changes then.... Our Bullpen is horrendous right now... Bastianelli and Alvarez have to go.... Larkin stunk it up today, but he has been good up until now, so we will not panic on him. Andrade is not as good as we had expected, but he has been decent. Jennissen has been okay, except for too many walks. So, with Ancona going into the rotation for Woodward, we need 3 new relievers, at least one of which needs to be a lefty, preferably two. There is no one I want to bring up from Vancouver (A), so we will have to see about trades. And I hate trading for relievers! But we are over the barrel here....

Today is an off day for the team, but it is my day to rebuild our Bullpen. And I think I did!

Trade #50
2B Dave Mann (28-R) to San Diego for SS Denny Peters (27-S)

Mann is talentless and Peters has a great glove, but not much of a bat; he'll fit right in with our other middle infielders! We need him because we are trading one of our other infielders...

Trade #51
RP Victor Alvarez (30-L) to San Francisco for RP Larry McLellan (27-R)

Alvarez was great for us last year, but even then he was not lights out against lefties and what's the point of having a lefty that cannot get out lefties? This year he cannot get anyone out. McLellan is a better version of Sandy Bastianelli: great control and just enough stuff to get some outs (hopefully). He has a 2.30 ERA in 58.2 career innings.

Trade #52
RF Brian Mitchell (23-L) to Dallas for RP Leonardo Sanchez (24-R)

Mitchell is great and I hate trading him, but he has missed significant time to injuries every season and I think it is just a matter of time before the injures eat him up. Sanchez is a 5 star reliever according to Scouting Director Oscar Cervantes. He is only 24, but is in his 4th season in the Majors and has a 2.89 career ERA so far with only 10 HR in 214.2 IP.

Trade #53
SP Bruce Ancona (24-L) to Kansas City for RP Steve Stewart (24-L)

I really hate trading Ancona because he was slotted to get a shot in the rotation, but we need a left-handed reliever and Ancona was the cheapest price I could pay for a good one. Stewart, hopefully, is a good one and one who is stronger against lefties than he is against righties. He has a 2.95 ERA in 39.2 career innings and lefties have hit him about 50 points less than righties.

Trade #54
SS Reid Reddick (26-R) to Toronto for SP Ron Marling (23-R)

I fell in love with Reddick last season, but have fallen out of love with all his strikeouts this season. 1 in very 3 AB is way, way too many. Marling was the #59 prospect this Spring. He has good control and may be ready for a shot at the rotation right now, but we will send him to Vancouver (A) to see how he does there. He has been in the Blue Jay's Major League Bullpen this season, but has only pitched in 2 games.

All the players we received, other than Ron Darling...I mean Marling, will go to the Major League roster.

RP Sandy Bastianelli (29-R) was sent to Vancouver (A). CF Larry Ballard (25-L) was recalled. 2B A.J. Lee will be ready to play in a couple of days and we will send him to Vancouver (A) for a little rehab.

SP Bil Woodward (23-R) will get at least one more start to prove that he is not utter garbage this season. He pitched some good games for us last year and I was really hoping he would improve this season, but he seems to have regressed rather then progressed. Jerry Suazo (29-L) will take over Mitchell's vacated leadoff spot and play center against right-handers.

Their run differential is -10 and ours is +18, now 5th best in the PCL but still best in the West.

Minnesota Twins (17-12 .586 3.5 GB in 3rd in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (20-9 .690 2.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

MIN: Gustavo Rosas (24-R 2-2 4.15) vs. POR: Bill Woodward (23-R 0-1 7.07)

Rosas gave up 1 run on 5 H and 4 BB with 8 SO in 8 IP last time out and got a win. He pitched strictly in relief last year as a rookie, so we have never faced him as a starter.

Woodward has had 12 days to ponder his last start, which was a no decision where he gave up 5 runs (3 earned) in 4 IP. If he gets hammered again today, we will have to figure out something else for him to do...

Jeff Novotny bloops a hit to left center and both runners score... 2 to 0, Twins. Dave Macnaughton hits a home run to left... 4 to 0, Twins. The Bullpen is up and a ticket to Vancouver is being purchased... Dave Kiehne fouls out to 1st. Larry Kelm lines out hard to left.

Bottom of the First:
Jerry Suazo grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Enrique Ramos takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Kim Springer flies out to deep right. Glenn Snowden hits a home run to right!! 4 to 2, Twins. Jeff Galka strikes out.

Top of the Fifth:

On the Hill: Larry McLellan (27-R), beginning the 4th inning of his Beaver debut. 25 pitches thrown. Dick Turner swings at the first pitch and doubles to right center. That is the first base runner McLellan has allowed. The Bullpen is up. P Gustavo Rosas bunts the runner to 3rd. Larry Murphy lines a hit to center and Turner scores. 5 to 2, Twins. Murphy tries to steal 2nd, but C Tim Higbee throws him out! Dick Henry lines a hit to left. Phil Brown flies out to deep right.

Top of the Sixth:
New Pitcher: Denny Jennissen (30-R). Jeff Novotny swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines a hit to center. Dave Macnaughton grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. He steals 2nd and goes to 3rd on a ground out. With 2 outs, Larry Kelm grounds a hit up the middle and Macnaughton scores... 6 to 3, Twins.

Bottom of the Sixth:
Glenn Snowden leads off with another home run to right! 6 to 4, Twins.

Bottom of the Eighth:

On the Hill: Dave Frandsen (26-R), after a scoreless 7th. Kim Springer leads off with a triple to right center! Glenn Snowden swings at an 0-2 pitch and jerks it high and deep down the left field line, but it is hooking foul... But the ump singles a home run!! Tie Game: 6 to 6. Three home runs for Snowden! I am glad we do not have replay in our League! That sure looked foul to me!

Top of the Ninth:
On the Hill: Rich Larkin (24-R), after a scoreless 8th. PH Jim Reyes (32-L), 0 for 1 in this series and 3 for 18 (.167) on the season, grounds out to 2nd. Dick Turner doubles to center... PH Carlos Alvarez (26-R), batting .229 in 48 AB, flies out to the warning track in right center and Turner trots over to 3rd. We walk Larry Murphy intentionally. Dick Henry swings at a 1-2 pitch and clears the bases with a double to left center.... Ugh... 8 to 6, Twins. Call to the Bullpen: Leonardo Sanchez (24-R). Dave Risinger (28-R) is in to play 2nd in a double switch. Phil Brown grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Joe Sarette (31-R), their closer who picked up a win on Thursday. Denny Peters beats out an infield hit. Dave Risinger grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. Jerry Suazo grounds a hit to center. Oh, please, let Glenn Snowden get another AB! Or win it before he comes up is okay, too.... Enrique Ramos tales a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up with 1 out. A long as we can avoid a double play here, Snowden will get a shot, unless Kim Springer wins it himself. Kim Springer ground a hit to right and 2 runs score!! Tie Game: 8 to 8. Glen Snowden, with 3 home runs on the day, steps up to the plate. Can he be the first ever to hit 4 in one game? Any sort of hit and win would be awesome, but a home run would be historic! An out is unthinkable! P Joe Sarette is being a pain in the backside and will not throw a pitch near the plate... Snowden flails at a couple of pitches way outside and the count is 3-2.... The payoff pitch is nowhere near the strike zone, but Snowden swings and get s a piece of it and taps the ball in front of the plate. C Dave Kiehne fields it and throws to 2nd to start a double play, but the ball sails on him into center field and Ramos scores and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!

On the road again! We have to play 27 of our next 31 games and 33 of our next 39 games on the road. We are in Houston today to play a 4 game series with the Astros. After a great April (16-7), they have not won a game in May yet. They just got swept in 4 games at Los Angeles over the weekend and have lost 9 in a row. We were 7-1 against them last season when they were 68-94 and finished in 7th place in the PCL East. We are 15-9 (.625) since 2001, tied for our best record against any team in the East (San Antonio). They are currently 12th in the PCL in scoring with 3.74 runs per game (Portland is #6 with 4.58). The Astros are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 3.87 per game (Portland is #6 with 3.68). We have allowed 6 fewer runs than they have. Their run differential is -4 and ours is +28, still 3rd in the PCL.

Portland Beavers (22-9 .710 3.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Houston Astros (16-15 .516 6 GB in 4th place in the PCL East)

POR: Frank Flores (25-R 5-1 1.75) PCLCS MVP vs. HOU: Chuck Nelson (25-R 3-2 3.86) Gold Glove

Flores only gave up 2 runs in 8 IP last time out, but got a no decision. He is currently 2nd on the Beavers and 5th in the PCL in ERA.

Nelson ended a 3 game winning streak by allowing 5 runs in 2.1 IP here to Denver and taking a loss in his last start. As a rookie last year, he was 6-6 with a 3.86 ERA in 9 starts (33 G) and 93.1 IP and 80 SO. He started 1 game against us and we beat him with 3 runs in 6 IP, but he struck out 7. We also tagged him with a loss in relief.

Trudy's report on Rich Larkin is a sprained ankle that will bother him for a week or two. Well, which is it? I can keep him on the roster if it will be a week, but have to DL him if it will be 2.... So we are damned if we do and damned if we don't... If we put him on the DL, he will be healthy in a week and we will have to wait another week before he can play. If we do not put him on the DL, in about a week he will have something happen to set his return back to longer than anticipated.... Well, we will try to get by without putting him on the DL. Our schedule should help us get by with fewer relievers for a little while.
