Glenn Snowden was the top vote getter!

The Pacific Coast League won, 5 to 0.
They now lead the series 2-1.

The PCL outhit the NL, 12 to 4.

Ken Manning (24-R) of Kansas City and MVP Dave McDowell each hit home runs. McDowell was also the game's MVP in 2001. Glenn Snowden was 1 for 2. Fernando Mexicano was not allowed by our ownership and medical staff to play... The winning pitcher was ex-Beaver David Fuentes (27-R) of Sacramento, who pitched a scoreless 2nd inning with 1 hit allowed.

Kansas City, Los Angeles and Milwaukee led with 5 players each named to the squad. Chicago and Detroit paced the NL with 4 players each. Salt Lake City, San Antonio and San Diego were all shutout.

The A Leagues also had their All-Star game today. 2B Ward Wahrman (25-R), who we signed as a minor league free agent in 2002, was the only Vancouver Mountie to make the team. He started the game at shortstop and went 1 for 3 with a SF. The American Association beat the International League, 5 to 3.

Thursday, July 17, 2003

I said before that RP Jeremy Head (27-R) had earned a trip to Vancouver (A), but I changed my mind and kept him around and sent Duke McKenzie back instead. I recalled P Rex Williams (26-R), who was 1-7 with a 5.35 ERA in 12 starts for the Beavers on 2001 and 2002. We will give him a chance in the Bullpen. He is also the next option to start a game should Bruce Ancona falter again.

The Milwaukee Brewers are here to kick off the second half of the season with a 4 game series through the weekend. We split 4 games in Milwaukee, the second series of the season. They are 9-4 in July. and went 18-8 in June. They are 4th in scoring in the PCL with 4.64 runs per game (Portland is #5 with 4.61). We have scored 2 fewer runs than they have. The Brewers are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.80 per game (Portland is #2 with 3.50). Their run differential is +74 and ours is +98, now tied with Dallas for the best in Baseball (and we are in 4th place). We are now an amazing 10 games under our Pythagorean projection. No one else in Baseball is even close to that. Hollywood, who is where we ought to, in first place, despite the fact that they have allowed more runs than they have scored is at +7, the most in Baseball.

Milwaukee Brewers (51-37 .580 2 GB in 3rd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (45-43 .511 5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West)

MIL: Ricardo Gil (24-R 6-8 3.89) vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (24-R 7-7 2.64)

We traded Gil to the Brewers in the ill-fated Fernando Martinez deal. We traded Martinez to New York for RP Denny Jennissen. I would rather have Gil back... We traded him because we thought he was going to be injury prone, but he has made 17 starts for the Brewers this season, though he has had a few nagging injuries. He won his last start, going 5 innings and allowing 1 run, snapping a 4 game personal losing streak. We have never faced him before.

Johnson has allowed 1 run in each of his last 2 starts, but is 0-1. We scored 10 runs once and 9 runs once for him, but in his other 17 starts, we are averaging 2.76 runs per game.

Yesterday's game with Milwaukee was rained out and was rescheduled for next week, July 30.

We are in Houston to play a 4 game series with the Astros. They split 4 games in Seattle over the weekend. We won 3 of 4 from them in Portland, May 8-11. They are 10th in scoring in the PCL with 4.07 runs per game (Portland is 4th with 4.65). The Astros are also 10th in fewest runs allowed with 4.29 per game (Portland is still #2 with 3.41). Their run differential is -21 and ours is +113, now 16 runs better than Dallas, who, by the way, have been passed by the Royals when it looked like the Eagles were going to run away with the division. Now, no division in Baseball is led by the team with the best run differential. The team in last in every division has the worst, though.

Portland Beavers (48-43 .527 4.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Houston Astros (43-49 .467 11 GB in 6th place in the PCL East)

We are back home to play the Oakland Oaks a 3 game series over the weekend. They just lost 4 games in Milwaukee after winning 3 of 4 in Denver. We are 4-2 against them on the season and beat them twice the last time they were here, May 19-20. They are 9th in the PCL in scoring with 4.02 runs per game (Portland is up to #3 with 4.71). Denver has passed San Francisco, who lost MVP Dave McDowell for the season, for the top spot in the PCL. The Oaks are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.36 per game (Portland is still #2 with 3.38). Their run differential is -35 and ours is +126, now 23 runs ahead of Dallas!

Oakland Oaks (47-49 .490 9 GB in 6th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (52-43 .547 3.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West)

OAK: Greg Ware (27-L 9-9 2.53) 2-time All-Star(02-03) vs. POR: Brice Ancona (23-L 0-2 5.17) Rookie

Ware is their #1 starter. He leads the PCL in SO with 124. He won his last start with 4 runs allowed in 8.1 IP and 2 BB and 10 SO. We had been lucky so far this year and have not faced him yet. Last year, he was 1-1 in 3 starts against us with 2 good games, including one with 12 SO.

Ancona lost his last start, but only allowed 2 runs in 6.2 IP, earning this chance to lose to Ware... Our 7 game winning streak seems to be in dire jeopardy.

9: P Bruce Ancona (23-S .200-5-0-3-.600 30) Rookie

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Metropolitan Stadium
Weather: 73 F, Clear Skies, with a 10 MPH wind blowing in from right
Attendance: 20,688

Top of the First:
Gerry Elliott swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit to center. Mario Rodriguez grounds into a 6-4-3 double play! Jany Puente takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Tim Metts, the Major League leader in HR with 28, plunks one in front of the plate and C Tim Higbee makes the play, 2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Jose Julio grounds out to 3rd. Jack Hinckley pops out to right. Fernando Mexicano swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 2nd... He is very cold: 1 for his last 17. .241 since coming back from his injury with only 1 HR in 83 AB.

Bottom of the Third:

A.J. Lee bunts his way aboard and then steals 2nd. But the next three make outs with 2 strikeouts...

Bottom of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Fernando Mexicano lines a hit to right. Glenn Snowden takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. With 2 outs, Reid Reddick takes another full count walk to load the bases up. A.J. Lee draws a walk to force in a run! 1 to 0, Beavers! Juan Rojas grounds a hit to center and 2 runs score!! 3 to 0, Beavers! P Bruce Ancona swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the Fifth:

Jose Julio reaches on a 2 base throwing error by 2B Mario Rodriguez. But the next three make outs...

Bottom of the Sixth:
Tim Higbee beats out an infield hit. Reid Reddick grounds a hit up the middle. A.J. Lee bunts the runners up... Not sure I like that one with the #7 hitter.... They walk Juan Rojas intentionally to load the bases up with 1 out for P Bruce Ancona. We cannot pinch-hit for him because he has a shutout going, but this is a paradox, because batting him now guarantees he allows a run in the next inning.... He flies out to right, fairly deep, but Higbee, who is very slow, stays put at 3rd... 2 outs. Jose Julio grounds out to 3rd...

Top of the Seventh:
Jeff Galka leads off with a double to center. The Bullpen is up. Alex Uriegas triples to right center and Galka scores... 3 to 1, Beavers. I hate when I am right... Mike West walks on 4 pitches ... Call to the Bullpen: Jeremy Head (27-R). Al Burrell lines a hit to center and Uriegas scores... 3 to 2, Beavers. PH Kenny Giachino (26-L), batting .287 with 3 HR in 122 AB, is sent up to hit for the pitcher. Call to the Bullpen: Vic Kyzer (24-L). Giachino bunts the runners up. PH Bobby Grinstead (28-R), 4 for 30 (.133) on the season, doubles to left center and both runners score... 4 to 3, Oaks. With 2 outs, we walk Javy Puente intentionally. Tim Metts walks on 4 pitches to load the bases up. Jeff Galka lines one to deep left, but Jose Julio runs it down!

Top of the Eighth:
With 2 outs, Al Burrell, the .220 hitter, gets his 3rd hit of the day... RF Russ Inguaggiato (25-L) hits a home run to right... 6 to 3, Oaks.

Bottom of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Mike Stoppa (26-L), a rookie with a 5.73 ERA in 11 IP. Tim Higbee lines a hit to center. Reid Reddick swings at a 3-2 pitch and hits a foul pop up to the right side, but 1B Tim Metts drops the ball for an error. Given another chance, Reddick lines a double down the left field line! A.J. Lee beats out an infield hit and Higbee scores! 6 to 4, Oaks. Juan Rojas grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6, and Reddick scores. 6 to 5, Oaks. PH Oscar Trejo (30-R) strikes out... 2 down. Jose Julio grounds out to 3rd...

Bottom of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Larry Johnson (25-R), their All-Star(02) closer. He did not make the All-Star team this season, even though he has 22 SV and a 1.34 ERA... In three season, his worst ERA on the year was 1.83... 2-3-4 up for us. PH Jerry Suazo (28-L) lines one hard, but right at the left fielder... Fernando Mexicano grounds out to 2nd... Glenn Snowden flies out to center...

Lost - 6 to 5

Now 10-20 in 1 run games...

We had 9 hits and made no errors
Oakland had 10 hits and made 2 errors

Bruce Ancona went 6 innings, allowed 3 runs, 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. I think he earned another start.
RHP Jeremy Head (L 0-1) faced 1 batter, a .220 hitter, threw 1 pitch and gave up a run and a hit. I want to get rid of him, but there is no one I want to call up. When Roy Huls (22-R) comes back, then we can get rid of Head.
LHP Vic Kyzer (BS 1) went 2 innings, allowed 2 runs, 3 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 1.
RHP Rex Williams pitched a perfect inning with 2 strikeouts.

Greg Ware (W 10-9) went 6 innings, gave us 3 runs, 6 hits, 4 walks (1 INT) and struck out 4.

Attendance: 20,312

Top of the First:
Gerry Elliott swings at the first pitch and doubles off the wall in right center... On the next pitch, he heads for 3rd and C Tim Higbee throws the ball into the outfield and Elliott scores... 1 to 0, Oaks. It only took 2 pitches to end our fantasy of back to back shutouts for P Bill Woodward... Mario Rodriguez swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines out to short. Javy Puente pops out to short. Fernando Mexicano doubles to right and Trejo scores! 5 to 4, Oaks. Glenn Snowden hits a home run to left!!! 7 to 5, Beavers! That sends P Emilio de la Torre to the showers. New Pitcher: Scotti Barden (26-L), a rookie with a 5.45 ERA in 33 IP with 51 H, 4 HR, 6 BB and 23 SO. Tim Higbee fouls out to 3rd...

Reid Reddick doubles off the wall in center and Julio scores! 9 to 6, Beavers! Now, I see why they wanted to keep P Scotti Barden in the game so badly.... We let P Denny Jennissen bat because it is only the 5th inning and we have only 2 other fresh arms out there and Jeremy Head (27-R) is one of them... Jennissen bunts one foul with 2 strikes... Oakland Oaks (48-50 .490 10 GB tied for 5th place in the PCL West) at

OAK: Danny Colon (33-L 7-9 4.17) vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (24-R 8-7 2.62)

Colon had a no decision last time out, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) in 7.1 IP. He beat us the only time we have faced him this season, going 7 innings and giving us 4 runs (1 earned).

A 2.62 ERA with the 3rd best offense in the League ought to be good for better than an 8-7 record... Johnson gave up 4 runs in 6 IP last time out and escaped with a no decision. The time before that, he pitched a 3 hit shutout.

Trudy the Trainer informed me that P Roy Huls (22-R) had been cleared to pitch, so we sent him to Vancouver (A) to get in shape.

The Los Angeles Angels are here to play a 2 game set. They won 3 games in Seattle over the weekend. We are 4-5 against them on the season and lost 2 of 3 the last time they were here, May 16-18. They are 14th in scoring in the PCL with 3.82 runs per game (Portland is up to #2 with 4.78). We are only 5 runs behind Denver, even though they have hit 32 more doubles, 40 more home runs, drawn 47 more walks and have an OPS .046 higher than ours. The Angels are 6th in fewest runs allowed with 3.99 per game (Portland is still #2 with 3.40). Their run differential is -17 and ours is +135, now 30 runs ahead of Dallas.

The Dallas Eagles are in town to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just split a pair of games at home with Salt Lake City. They swept us in 4 games at Dallas, May 12-15. We did not score a run in the first three games and only scored 3 in the finale. They are 4th in the PCL in scoring with 4.60 runs per game (Portland is now #1 with 4.87!). The Eagles are 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.56 per game (Portland is still 2nd with 3.44). Their run differential is +105, the 2nd best in Baseball and ours is +145! Yet both of us are currently in 2nd place in our divisions...

Kevin Ross grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6, and Moyers goes to 3rd. Call to the Bullpen: Victor Alvarez (29-L). Rick Mansoor is in to catch in a double switch. Mark Carlson lines a hit to right and Moyers scores... 3 to 2, Beavers. I just have to accept the fact that Alvarez is a great pitch who cannot get lefties out... Ross steals 3rd. Gilberto Lule strikes out. 2 down. John Trent swings at a 3-2 pitch and strikes out!!

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Rich Larkin (24-R). With 1 out, PH Dennis Allen (28-R) grounds a hit to left. Kevin Ross strikes out looking! Mark Carlson grounds out to the pitcher and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

Won - 3 to 2

We beat the Eagles!!
We won a 1 run ball game!!

We had 8 hits and made no errors
Dallas had 8 hits and made 1 error

Steve Muir went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit, no walks and struck out no one. At bat, he hit a double and had an RBI.
RHP Rex Williams (W 2-0) went 3 innings, allowed 1 run, 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1.
RHP Jeremy Head (H 1) went 1.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 3 hits and 1 walk.
LHP Victor Alvarez (H 7) went 1.2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 3.
RHP Rich Larkin (SV 4) pitched a scoreless 9th, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.

Dawson Winslow (L 7-6) went 6 innings, gave us 3 runs, 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. At bat, he drew a walk and scored a run.

RF Jose Julio went 2 for 2 with a walk, stole 2 bases, scored a run and had an RBI. SS Juan Rojas hit a double. 2B A.J. Lee hit a double and had an RBI. PH Fernando Mexicano drew a walk. PR Bill Woodward scored a run.

I am dreading Trudy's report on Steve Muir... We have already lost one starting pitcher for the season and if we lose another, we can forget about catching Hollywood... But she says it is just a sore hamstring that will be fine after a good night's sleep!

Around the League: Hollywood won again, beating Kansas City, 8 to 5, at Kansas City. We are 13-3 since the All-Star break, but they have gone 12-4, so we have only gained 1 game. But they lost RF Fred Rambo (26-L) for two months today, so that is a glimmer of hope. Rambo was batting .296/.380/.409 in 389 AB. His replacement, John Burkey (28-R), is batting .178/.282/.219 in 73 AB with 19 SO and stinks on defense. We play a 3 game series in Hollywood starting on Monday.

Dallas Eagles (62-42 .596 in 1st place in the PCL East) at

DAL: Tommy Harrison (24-R 10-6 3.50) vs. POR: Frank Flores (24-R 11-5 3.41)

Flores has given up 9 runs in 7 IP in his last two starts, but managed to escape a loss both times.
