Not convinced the current facepack image is from his playing career.

Sourced from oldcardboard.com who display a magnificent collection of 68 NY Clipper portraits.

The current Facepack image is not only from his playing career; it is, in fact, from his brief stint in the majors. The photo was clipped (and rotated) from the bottom row of this 1881 Chicago White Stockings composite.

Thanks, I think you're right. Oh well, now I just have to put Barrios back on my want list.

RARE 1980s MARINERS

Team photos can be a good place to find unicorns. Here are two seldom-seen Seattle Mariners from the 1980's, Vance McHenry and Ron Musselman, discovered hiding in 1981 and 1982 team photographs-posters I found online (don't have the source anymore--sorry). I have never seen any other genuine major league shots of either man in a Seattle uniform. These are small and of poor quality, though I did blow them up a little and work on them in photoshop to remove some of the rough edges. I suppose they will do as placeholders until someone finds anything better. McHenry is the first image, Musselman the second.

Hal Lanier Inquiry

4 Attachment(s)
Here's a question for Merkle and other forum members who have been able to "solve" similar questions with detective like perspective.

Attached are two pics from the '72 Topps set. It is my understanding that Candlestick had astroturf throughout the 70s. And from what I recall there was an "open" end as part of the stadium.

The next two are both Hal Lanier in what appears to be the same setting.

So my question is, any ideas on where these photos were taken and based on the unis, if they are about the same timeframe? I hate to go by what I think Hal would look like so I'm resorting to similar images from teammates. Part of my thinking is that if Candlestick had turf beginning in '70, these images perhaps at least have Hal in the Stick in either '70 or '71 as he went to the Yanks in the winter of 1972. If it is not the Stick - maybe Phoenix Municipal Stadium for Spring training?? - than at least it appears to be in the same stadium and I can further determine a timeframe.

Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Not sure of the reason for the confusion. Astroturf was installed in 1970, ripped out after the football season of 1978, and is visible in all of the photos.

The upper deck construction behind Reberger pinpoints that photo as 1971; Dietz is probably that year (possibly 1970). The darker Lanier where the photographer didn't adjust for the artificial green of the turf is almost certainly 1971, the other might be 1970.

Miguel Dilone was briefly with the Chicago White Sox during the 1983 season, the Sox' famous "Winning Ugly" summer. Here is a large autographed image of him from that stint, posted on ebay by andy1921. Photos of Dilone with the Pirates in the 70's are fairly common, but I have seen no images of him with the '83 Pirates.

When you put it like that, sure - it all falls into place.

Thanks
