No, that's Hershberger
He was in Cleveland's camp in 1972, then released.
Most major league teams in the '60s tended to use the previous season's uniforms in spring training and break out the new ones - whether they were new designs or just repeats - on Opening Day. That was when a player was expected to make it through a season in a couple of sets of unis. The Indians were notorious for changing their uniforms (new designs in 1970, 1972, 1973, 1978). That shot of Hershberger is from '72 but he's wearing a 70-71 shirt. By the way, THIS is Gomer Hodge. |

I wonder why he didn't mention it in the article? It seemed to me he was saying he was done after he declined to sign with the Yankees. |
Speaking of Hershberger...........

Does anyone know if Mike Hershberger was in any way related to Willard Hershberger who played for the Reds from 1938-40 before commiting suicide on August 2, 1940 while an active player. I had read much speculation about the subject (Mike was from Ohio and Willard played for the Reds) but no one had a solid answer. The Reds manager, Bill McKechnie, supposedly talked to Willard Hershberger just before the incident and learned what was troubling him but McKechnie never told anyone what Willard had shared with him.
Here are a couple of Willard Hershberger: |
Looking for: A *decent* Pirates photo of Jim Shellenback
Within this thread, or thru Googling, the Jim Shellenback pics I see are very small, and his expression often looks as if he's trying to get peanut butter off the roof of his mouth.
I'm requesting a nice looking Pirate photo of Jim Shellenback, do any exist? Thankew Jay |
