Confused over left/right splits

Looking at the online manual and having searched on the forum there are plenty of references to left/right splits etc. So I have created 3 seasons 1991, 2010 and 2015 but the only one that actually shows different ratings for left/right splits is the 2015 one. So what is the point in having vs Left and vs Right splits on the player rating page if there is actually no difference between them - in the 1991 and 2010 seasons.

So when people (and the manual) talk about choosing a batter based on whether the pitcher is left or right, how do I do this when there is no data to work with?

Based on the above is it actually even worth worrying about whether pitchers/batters are left/right if there are no apparent differences i.e what does the game engine use to differentiate.

Sorry if that was a bit garbled.

OOTP does not currently support RL Left/Right splits. Whatever ones are in-game are randomly generated for each player. They should be there in 1991 and 2010 however if you checked the "Generate random left/right splits" box when setting up your game.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes I saw the 'generate random splits' but assumed that was an 'option' and that the real life splits would be available if that wasn't selected.

Its odd then that the 2015 season does have LR splits?

So as I said is it even worth worrying about left/right when selecting a lineup if you do not generate random splits.

I'm not sure why the 2015 season would have LR splits. It hadn't even started at the time of release (March 20, 2015) of OOTP16.

I can't even begin to fathom the amount of work that would have to go into creating RL LR splits for historical seasons, can you? The database is immense already. Also, I'm not sure how far back LR splits go in history. Somewhere in the 1950's maybe? It certainly doesn't stretch all the way back to 1871.

If anybody's capable of doing it, it's Spritze, the resident database genius. If it hasn't been done yet, it's probably because it's too difficult to code/incorporate into the game. ;)

No L/R splits is something that I don't like regarding the game. Certainly with how it's become such a big part of baseball, and how it's managed, they've got to find a way to incorporate that into their game.

I agree. However I see in the online manual under batting ratings it does seem to indicate they have them in there. I am guessing (like noted above) this is not historical data per player but randomly generated splits.

I know many of their competitors have those actual real player left/right splits. It is readily available to look up and can't imagine it would be that hard to program in there since they already use randomly generated lefty/righty splits. Stats, Inc. could easily supply all the data for current season in a suitable format and all you would need is to use that database.

I agree on this. The game today and even some 20 years back had some players that was only used as specialist. Mostly lefty vs lefty.
It is a monster task to get this in historical settings, but it would have been a humongus lift to the game.

This must be one of the primary targets for this game to evolve, perhaps even before it takes 3d to the next level.
With so many playing the historical part it's strange that so little comments are mentioned on this vital part of baseball.

Picking sabermetric might overdo selections, but perhaps it will use this lefty specialist more than traditional. Or am I wrong.
