Monday, May 6, 2002

We put CF Esteban Mondolfo (30-R) on the Disabled List and recalled CF Brian Mitchell (21-L) from Vancouver (A).

We are in Houston to play a 4 game series with the Astros. They lost 3 of 4 in San Francisco over the weekend, but ended the Seals' 15 game winning streak. We were 4-4 against them last year. They are 13th in scoring in the PCL with 3.55 runs per game (Portland is down to 15th with 3.39). The Astros are tied for 5th in fewest runs allowed with 3.65 per game (Portland is 8th with 3.97). Their run differential is -3 and ours is -18.

Portland Beavers (14-17 .452 9 GB in 6th place in the PCL West) at
Houston Astros (13-18 .419 8 GB in 6th place in the PCL East)

POR: Duke McKenzie (24-R 0-2 3.55) Rookie vs. HOU: Ed Sliney (28-R Season debut)

McKenzie only allowed 3 H and 2 R in 7.1 IP last time out, but walked 5 and only struck out 1. If he has a bad game today, he will go back to Vancouver (A).

Sliney spent April in New Orleans (A). Last year, he was 2-10 with a 5.19 ERA in 19 starts for the Astros. We faced him once last year and he gave us 4 runs in 5 IP, but had a no decision. Will yet another crappy pitcher shut is down?

Top of the Seventh:

New Pitcher: Gerry Slate (30-R), who has not allowed a run in 15.1 IP with 17 SO. Jim Shippy leads off and hits one 420 ft. to center for a home run!!!! Unbelievable!!! He had 3 XBH in 98 AB for us last year and that was his third in 19 AB this year! Second today!

Rookie P Duke McKenzie (24-R) was sent back to Vancouver and p Roger Lerer (28-L) was recalled. Lerer is currently healthy, but probably for not much longer...

POR: Ricardo Gil (23-R 2-1 2.40) vs. HOU: Tommy Kessell (33-R 2-4 3.65)

Kim Springer's back is okay, so he will be back in the lineup.

We are home to play the Los Angeles Angels a 3 game series over the weekend. They just won 3 of 4 in Salt Lake City. We split 2 games with them here to open the season. Both games went to extra innings. The Angels are 9th in scoring in the PCL with 3.82 runs per game (Portland is dead last with 3.46). We have two players on pace to hit over 40 HR, but still cannot score to save our life... Our League worst OPS of .643 may be part of the issue... Los Angeles is 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.03 per game (Portland is 8th with 3.86). Our starting pitchers are 2nd in the PCL in ERA at 2.94, but our Bullpen is 13th with a 4.08 ERA. Usually, relievers have better ERA's than starters... The Angels' run differential is -7; ours is -14.

Los Angeles Angels (17-17 .500 7.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (17-18 .486 8 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

LA: Rich Carlsen (31-R 2-4 5.08) vs. POR: Steve Muir (27-R 3-2 1.86) Gold Glove

Carlsen was 0-1 in 2 starts against us last year, but the no decision game was very good.

Muir has had 5 straight starts where he has allowed exactly 1 run. He is now 2nd in the PCL in ERA.

P Roger Lerer has been sent to Vancouver (A).

Trade #27:

Minor League 2B Franklin Felix (24-R) to Pittsburgh for minor league P Rondey Moe (26-R).

Moe was 9-13 with a 3.83 ERA in 29 starts for the Pirates last year. He is 4-2 with a 2.83 ERA for Tucson (A) this season. He has control issues. He will get a shot at the Beaver rotation.

Los Angeles Angels (19-17 .528 7.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (17-20 .459 10 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

LA: Tom Sayers (26-R Major League debut) Rookie vs. POR: Joe Hoehn (27-R Major League debut) Rookie

Both pitchers are making their Major League debuts today!

Sayers was a first round pick for the Angels in this year's B Leagues draft, but has not pitched in a live game in 8 months due to surgery to repair a torn labrum last September. They elected not to send him to Edmonton (A) to get in shape. Hopefully, he is rusty and we can get a hit or two. He hit .328 with a .805 OPS in B Ball.

We got Hoehn in a trade with Kansas City a few days ago. He has been stuck in A Ball because the Royals have one of the best rotations in Baseball. In 42 A Ball starts, he was 25-11 with 2.59 ERA and 1.6 BB/9. He is not a hard thrower and lets the batter get himself out, but also will give up some home runs.

The Hollywood Stars are in town for a short two game series. They have played the two hottest teams in Baseball in their last two series, Kansas City and San Diego, and have lost 7 in a row. They did not score a run at San Diego in three games over the weekend. We lost a pair of games to them when they were here on April 22 and 23. After the three straight shutouts, they are down to 5th in scoring in the PCL with 4.03 runs per game (Portland is still last and dropping with 3.29). We are now hitting .229 as a team, the worst in Baseball. If we do not hit a home run, we do not score... The Stars are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 3.97 per game (Portland is up to 7th with 3.87). Their run differential is +2 and outs is -22.

Top of the First:
Fred Rambo grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Gus McCollum grounds out to 1st, unassisted. It seems that the Stars have seen tapes of 1B Glenn Snowden's defense of late and their strategy is to hit the ball at him.... Eduardo Galo grounds out to 1st, unassisted!!! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:

Brian Mitchell grounds out to 2nd. Kim Springer grounds out to the pitcher. Shannon Kuchta grounds out to short...

Bottom of the Second:

Glenn Snowden leads off with a triple to center! Oh, please let him get hot! It is so sad to see him hitting .252... Rick Woodell grounds out to 1st, unassisted and Snowden holds at 3rd. Jim Shippy doubles down the left field line and Snowden scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! Shippy is the one and only batter on the team hitting better than he did last season... Jose Julio grounds a hit to center and Shippy scores! 2 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the Fourth:
Glenn Snowden reaches on a 2 base throwing error by 3B Larry Church. He goes to 3rd, on a ground out by Rick Woodell, 1-3. Jim Shippy beats out an infield hit and Snowden scores! 3 to 0, Beavers!

Top of the Fifth:

With 1 out, Jerry Hatcher singles and steals 2nd. Eduardo Mario grounds a single to center. P Gerry Sullivan swings away and pops out to shallow right and the runners hold. Fred Rambo grounds out to 2nd!

Top of the Sixth:
Gus McCollum lines a hit to left center and steals 2nd. Eduardo Galo grounds one to 1st and, sure enough, Snowden boots another one. May 12 and he has already matched his error total from a season ago (9)... The Bullpen is up. Larry Church strikes out looking! Bobby Deaton grounds a double play ball to short and Juan Rojas makes a bad throw to 2nd and McCollum scores... 3 to 1, Beavers. That will do it for Rojas... Buy him a ticket to Vancouver (A), please. He is only in there for his glove, but that is his 4th error in 11 games.... Jerry Suazo grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and Galo goes to 3rd. 2 outs. Jerry Hatcher lines a hit to center and Galo scores... Suazo tries to go to 3rd, but Brian Mitchell throws him out! 3 to 2, Beavers.

Top of the Seventh:
Eduardo Maria lines a hit to right and goes to 2nd on a wild pitch... PH Jose Naranjo (28-R), their All-Star LF, grounds out to the catcher, 2-3, and Maria goes to 3rd. Call to the Bullpen: Dick Register (28-L). With the infield in, Fred Rambo grounds out to short and Maria holds at 3rd. 2 outs. Call to the Bullpen: Jim Kokos (28-R). Gus McCollum takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Call to the Bullpen: Chuck Purnell (26-L). Eduardo Galo grounds a hit to right and Maria scores... Tie game: 3 to 3. McCollum goes to 3rd. Larry Church hits a home run to right.... 6 to 3, Stars...

Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Frank Wood (28-R) with a 4.58 ERA in 19.2 IP. Only 14 H and 22 SO, but 15 BB. Jose Julio draws a walk. PH Fernando Mexicano grounds a double down the right field line and Julio heads home.... He is safe and Mexicano takes 3rd! 6 to 4, Stars. 4 runs in one game! We scored 4 runs in the whole series against the Angels... PH Kurt Cunning (30-R) is sent up. So far, he has failed to match the magic of 2001 when he hit .425 for the Beavers. He is 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts... He lines out hard to left and Mexicano tags up and beats the throw home! 6 to 5, Stars. Brian Mitchell draws a walk. With 2 outs, Shannon Kuchta doubles to the right field corner, but Mitchell stops at 3rd... Why? Glenn Snowden grounds out to short...

Bottom of the Eighth:

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Jeff Gleason (25-R). PH Steve Bone (27-R), their All-Star catcher, lines a hit to right center. Fred Rambo lines a hit to left... There are no other pitchers in the Bullpen. We have used them all already, except for David Fuentes, who pitched 3 innings yesterday. Gus McCollum beats out an infield hit and the bases are loaded with no outs.... Our relievers either get 10 guys out in a row or give up 10 walks and hits in a row.... I have a feeling I am going to get another nickel soon.... Eduardo Galo grounds into a 6-4-3 double play and Bones scores and Rambo goes to 3rd. 9 to 7, Beavers! 2 outs! Larry Church, who hit a home run last time up, swings at the first pitch and grounds one down to 1st and Glenn Snowden does NOT boot it! He tosses to P Gleason covering 1st and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

SS Juan Rojas (23-S) has been sent back to Vancouver (A). SS Dave Risinger (26-R) is recalled, even though he hit .173 in 12 games for the Mounties. He did not make an error for them and has only 1 for the Beavers in 25 starts. That's 1 error in 37 starts at shortstop, which is pretty impressive.

Hollywood Stars (20-19 .513 7 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (18-21 .462 9 GB tied for 6th place in the PCL West)

HOL: Craig Raposo (24-R 4-1 2.66) Rookie vs. POR: Frank Flores (23-R 3-3 2.61) Rookie

We have not faced the rookie Raposo before. He lost his 1st start of the season and is 4-0 in 6 starts since. 6 of his 7 starts have been Quality ones.

After two not so pretty losses, Flores pitched well in a no decision last time out, allowing only 2 hits and an unearned run in 6.1 IP.

Top of the First:
Fred Rambo strikes out! Gus McCollum grounds out to short. Jose Naranjo flies out to right! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:

Brian Mitchell lines a hit to right. He steals 2nd and goes to 3rd when C Steve Bone throws the ball into center! Kim Springer gets beaned. Fernando Mexicano strikes out. Glenn Snowden swings at the first pitch and fouls out to 1st.... When will he start hitting? We thought the .316 he hit last year was a bit of an off year for him... Now he is hitting .250...Rick Woodell flies out to left... Runner on 3rd with no outs and no runs...

Top of the Third:
With 1 out, the Stars get their first hit: a home run to center by Jerry Hatcher. 1 to 0, Stars.

Top of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Steve Bone and Bobby Deaton each hit a double down the left field line... 2 to 0, Stars. Jerry Suazo grounds a hit to right and Deaton scores. 3 to 0, Stars.

Bottom of the Sixth:

Fernando Mexicano grounds a hit to right. Glenn Snowden grounds a hit to center and Mexicano goes to 3rd. Rick Woodell strikes out...

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Chuck Purnell (26-L). Fred Rambo grounds one to short, but Rich Cruz makes a throwing error... Yep... Call to the Bullpen: Jim Kokos (28-R). Gus McCollum grounds out to 2nd and Rambo moves up. We walk Jose Naranjo intentionally... They pull off a double steal... That is MY favorite thing to do when idiots walk a batter with a runner on 2nd... So, of course we walk Steve Bone intentionally and now the bases are loaded and two of the runners were put there on purpose.... Insanity! And now we are facing a string of lefties and the pitcher on the hill sucks against lefties.... Call to the Bullpen: David Fuentes (25-R), the last pitcher left in the Pen... Jose Julio (38-R) comes in to play right in a double switch. Fernando Mexicano moves to left. Bobby Deaton doubles down the left field line, clearing the bases... 3 runs are in, instead of one, thanks to the intentionally walks... Or it could have been none, if we had faced the righties, maybe.... 6 to 3, Stars. The next two make outs...

Bottom of the Eighth:

Shannon Kuchta leads off with an infield hit. Rich Cruz doubles down the left field line. Rick Mansoor grounds out to short and Kuchta scores. Cruz holds at 2nd. 6 to 4, Stars. Jose Julio doubles to right center and Cruz scores! 6 to 5, Stars. That does it for P Craig Raposo. New Pitcher: Bud Dennis (35-L), their closer, with a 13.50 ERA in 1.1 IP. 4 H and a walk and no SO. PH Jack Hinckley (26-R) lines out to right. 2 outs. P David Fuentes is up.... If we pinch-hit for him, we have to bring in a very tired Jeff Gleason, who is not so great when he is fresh... Fuentes is 1 for 1 as a hitter, soooo.... He swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to right and Julio scores!!! Fuentes ends up on 2nd! Tie game: 6 to 6! Fernando Mexicano strikes out....

Top of the Ninth:

Jack Hinckley stays in the game to play center. PH Eduardo Galo (34-L), a .280 hitter with 0 HR in 25 AB, lines a hit to left center... LF Bud Lisk (27-L), a .207 hitter with 1 HR in 82 AB, tries to bunt, but pops it up and 1B Glenn Snowden catches it and fires to 1st where Shannon Kuchta is to double off Galo!! Fred Rambo flares a hit to left... Gus McCollum lines one down the left field line, but Fernando Mexicano makes a running catch!

Bottom of the Ninth:
Glenn Snowden pops out to short... Rick Woodell beats out an infield hit. Shannon Kuchta grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. Rich Cruz grounds out to 2nd...

Extras!

With no Bullpen!

Top of the Tenth:

3-4-5 hitters up for the Stars. Jose Naranjo pops one to shallow left and everyone stands around and lets it drop for a hit.... Why is our defense so horrendous? With 1 out, Bobby Deaton lines a hit to right... PH Jim Reyes (30-L), a 1st baseman who is hitting .214 with 0 HR in 14 AB, is sent up. He had an .821 OPS last year... Naranjo steals 3rd... Reyes beats out an infield hit and Naranjo scores... 7 to 6, Stars. Larry Church lines a hit to center and the bases are loaded with 1 out. SS Ramon Arguedas (26-R), a rookie hitting .333 in 12 AB, strikes out. Bud Lisk grounds out to the pitcher.

LF Kim Springer (21-L) has been sent to Vancouver (A). LF Don Neumann (32-S) has been recalled.

We are in San Diego to play the Padres a 4 game series through the weekend. They just ended a 6 game winning streak by losing a pair of games at home to Los Angeles. This is our first meeting with them this year. We were 3-11 against them last season. They are 9th in scoring in the PCL with 3.88 runs per game (Portland is still last, but tied now with Seattle at 3.50!). The Padres are 2nd in fewest runs allowed with 3.23 per game (Portland is back to 8th with 4.03). Their run differential is +26 and ours is -21.

Portland Beavers (18-22 .450 10 GB tied for 6th place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (21-19 .525 7 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL West)

POR: Steve Muir (27-R 3-2 1.95) vs. SD: Bobby Wolfe (25-R 3-3 1.89)

Muir has had 5 excellent starts in a row. His last was his worst in that stretch with 2 runs allowed in 7 IP on 4 H. It was a no decision. He is the last Beaver starter to win a game and that was 11 days ago... he is 4th in the PCL in ERA.

We were 1-1 against Wolfe last year, but scored well in both games (11 R in 8.2 IP). Every start of his this year has been a Quality one, except 1 where he only went 5 innings, but he only allowed 1 run in that game. He is currently 3rd in the PCL in ERA.

Portland Beavers (19-22 .463 9.5 GB tied for 6th place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (21-20 .512 7.5 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL West)

POR: Rondey Moe (26-R Season debut) vs. SD: John Riley (26-R 5-3 1.74) All-Star

Moe makes his Beaver debut today. Truth be told, he was mostly singled out for trade because of his name. But he could be a very good pitcher if he would quit walking so any batters. His last start in A Ball was a 4 hit shutout with no walks and 9 SO. He hit .233 for the Pirates last year.

Riley is their #1 starter and he is currently 2nd in the PCL in ERA. He has pitched shutouts in 2 of his last 3 starts and only gave up 3 hits and 1 run in 8 IP in the other. He has won his last 4 starts. He was 2-0 in 4 starts against us last season. We only scored 4 runs in 35 IP (1.03 ERA).

Since no matter what I try to get us to score some runs comes a cropper, I am going to quit trying and just put our best fielders out there (except Fernando Mexicano and Shannon Kuchta will still get to play).

2B Randy Dunaway (26-R) has been sent back to Vancouver (A) and SS Juan Rojas (23-S) has been recalled. He'll make some errors, but he has the best range of any of our infielders.

We are back home to play the Denver Bears a 4 game series through the weekend. They just dropped a pair of games in Kansas City, but had won 6 in a row before that. This is the first time we have faced them this season. We were 5-3 against them last year. They are tied for 5th in scoring in the PCL with 4.23 runs per game (Portland is still last and dropping with 3.43). The Bears are 13th in fewest runs allowed with 4.41 per game (Portland is 7th with 3.85). Their run differential is -8 and ours is -19.

Denver Bears (19-25 .432 13 GB in 6th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (21-25 .457 8.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

DEN: Jesus Carrasquillo (35-L 3-0 2.15) vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (23-R 3-3 2.36)

We were 2-0 against Carrasquillo last year, scoring 12 runs in 11.1 IP. This will be only his 5th start this season. The only one he did not win, he allowed 1 unearned run in 8.1 IP.

Johnson ended a 5 start winless streak last time out with 1 hit allowed in 8 IP, but he tried to pitched the 9th and gave up 4 runs.
