The A’s have a run differential of -50 so far this year. Tamp Bay outscored them 31-5 in their 3 game series and the Angels outscored them 20-3 in the opening series (the A’s did win one of those games).

Westheim 04-13-2023 05:35 PM

Meanwhile the Rays are 13-0 and according to MLB.com, no team in the modern era has started a season 14-0.

Will be up the Blue Jays to do something about that on Friday!

And yet they still have more wins than the Tigers. :(

I could have sworn the ‘87 Brewers did but nope theirs did indeed stop at 13.

Like a lot of other people, I was totally unaware of this record until now. As a matter of fact, according to this, nobody was aware of it until not too long ago.

Aaron Judge probably won't touch Ted Williams’ 84-game on-base streak, but we should learn that number

Quote:

In May 1999, the Yankees’ Derek Jeter was exactly where Judge [sat] Thursday. He had reached in 45 straight games, split between the 1998 and 1999 seasons, and the next day, The New York Times noted his feat with a headline that dubbed it "The Streak Without A Record.”

Seymour Siwoff, who oversaw the preeminent Elias Sports Bureau, told the paper that there simply was no record for consecutive games reaching base.

“You'd have to have a play-by-play of every major-league game going all the way back more than 100 years,” he said. “And nobody has that.”

Now, though, we do. Somewhere between 1999 and 2006 — most likely through the work of Herm Krabbenhoft and SABR, as far as I [the author of the article] can tell — the record was firmly established.

In 1949, legendary Boston Red Sox slugger Ted Williams reached in 84 consecutive games from July 1 to Sept. 27, besting a 74-game streak DiMaggio compiled around his famous hitting streak and a separate 73-game streak Williams began in the summer of 1941 and concluded in 1942.

I thought this datum was impressive:

Quote:

The team [Rays] already has a +71 run differential, meaning they've outscored opponents by 71 runs to open the season. That figure is much higher than what the 1982 Braves and 1987 Brewers posted during their 13-0 starts.

It should be noted that after that 13-0 start, the 1987 Brewers went 78-71 the rest of the way (including a 12-game losing streak in May) and finished 7 games back, in 3rd place.

Nothing to indicate that's predictive, but anyhow.

Ok but what’s the FUN differential?

Also I just had a guy in my league end a 52 game on base streak so Judge sux lol

If they still play in front of nobody, you have to multiply that +71 with a big fat zero to get the fun differential :p

They are 7th out of 15 AL teams so far in attendance.

You think that's bad, a couple of weeks ago, on Opening Day, the local newspaper published its annual MLB preview issue. (I just got around to reading it today.)

One article went around the league and highlighted the best everyday player from each team. This, this is what they came up with for the Oakland Athletics.

13 is an unlucky number. :p

Mariners Luis Castillo perfect through 6 vs. Rockies.

I know know if we will ever see another nine inning no-hitter by a pitcher.

Jason Moyer 04-16-2023 10:28 PM

I suspect that if they keep the games at the length they are right now we'll eventually start seeing more complete games in general again. Getting strikeouts under control would help.

Cobra Mgr 04-16-2023 11:35 PM

Not MLB, but.............

A Florida reliever came in w/the bases loaded & 2 out & struck out the batter. He reportedly shouted "Let's go" towards the Georgia dugout (you decide) & was ejected by the home plate ump.

What's funny is Florida later broke open the game w/a GS. Here's how the batter made his point to the ump.

Déjà Bru 04-16-2023 11:56 PM

My God. I kept swiping the phone screen upward, looking for the other Yankee pitchers. Then I realized that Gerrit Cole had pitched a 2-hit shutout. Had been allowed to pitch a shutout, that is. By Mr. Hide-Behind-The-Stat-Sheet Aaron Boone. He must have been sweating bullets letting Cole throw 109 pitches. If Cole even whispers "ow" in the next few days, Boone will see his managerial career passing before his eyes.
