1857: Battle of Brooklyn Rematch
As of 1857 baseball remained a New York City area game. In Boston the Massachusetts Game, a variation of Town Ball, remained popular and in Philadelphia and Washington it was Town Ball that was the game of choice. Still the number of local teams continued to grow.

In 1857 the Battle of Brooklyn continued as the Eckford and Atlantics met again with the first game on August 22nd. This time the Eckfords won at home in an exciting 2-1 contest. The return match was held on August 29th at the Atlantics home ground to celebrate the Battle of Brooklyn. The Atlantics won handily 9-4 and the rubber game was set for September 5th at the Eckfords’ home grounds. The Eckfords pitcher John Dixon pitched a masterful 1-0 shutout the first of its kind.

Pioneer Baseball writer Henry Carson who has just become a convert to the game of baseball said the exciting contest between the two Brooklyn teams was the beginning of the game as America’s National Pastime.
