Facing dominant Minnesota starter Bert Blyleven and needing one win to clinch a playoff spot, the Rangers prevailed in a 6-1 win in their 161st game of the season. Rangers ace Randy Jones collected his 25th win of the season as Texas took advantage of three Twins errors and 4 unearned runs. Rangers 1B/3B Ron Cey went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI's in the win.

Unfortunately, the Rangers got some sour news toward the end of the game when star outfielder Ben Oglivie severely strained an abdominal muscle while running out a double. Oglivie is expected to miss 6-7 weeks and is ruled out for the playoffs.

With this victory, the Rangers will battle the Yankees for AL championship in a few days.
