The following players were on the ballot for the first time:

Ed Bagley spent his 12 years in the big leagues alternating between the starting rotation and the bullpen for the Cardinals, Orioles, and Brooklyn. He finished with a 74-96 career record.

Bob Black was a starting pitcher who played 12 years with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a 20 game winner in his second year, 1885, but he is perhaps best known for unfulfilled expectations.

Ed Coughlin spent seven years in Baltimore and five very good years in Brooklyn. He vanished with 119 career saves in 386 career innings pitched.

Daisey Davis spent his entire 12-year career with the Philadelphia Athletics, winning 123 games in 301 career games started.

Fred Dunlap had an elite career while playing 17 seasons with the Cleveland Spiders and Baltimore Orioles. He was a three-time MVP, a four-time Silver Slugger, and he made it to 8 All Star games. He finished with 2,231 career hits and a .334 career batting average to go to along with his five batting championships.

Bob Emslie was, for about six years, likely the best relief pitcher in baseball. He led the league in saves four times and in appearances three times. This led to 10 All Star appearances and three Relief Pitcher of the Year Awards. He spent most of his 13-year career with the Boston American League team.

Pud Galvin experienced most of his success prior to the 1884 season. He finished his career with 331 victories in 698 games started.

George Gore had several good seasons while playing center field with the Cardinals organization. He finished with four All Star appearances and four Silver Slugger awards to go with his 1,515 career hits.
