Arbitration Hearings and Free Agents File
11/21/13:
In the end we decided to non-tender Garret Jones. It was a tough decision as Garret was a fan favorite and a left handed power bat but the budget forced our hand. Improving team defense and fortifying our pitching staff are our top priorities right now and Jones just didn't fit into those plans. We feel we have a good core of young hitters and we may be able to find someone to do the job that Garret did at a lower cost so we wish him the best. Here are the results of the arbitration cases:
Gaby Sanchez- The office ruled in favor of the team at $2 mil.
James McDonald- The office ruled in favor of the team at $3.2 mil.
Chris Perez- The office ruled in favor of the team at $8.35 mil.
Michael McKenry- The office ruled in favor of the player at $1.9 mil.
Chris Leroux- The office ruled in favor of the team at $735K
Travis Snider- The office ruled in favor of the team at $750K
Mike Zagurski- The office ruled in favor of the team at $735K
11/24/13:
We made an offer to 31 year old right handed pitcher Iwane Inoue who is an international free agent out of Japan. Greg Smith sees him as a solid addition to the bullpen and could even start if we needed him to. His contract demand of 750k for one year was very reasonable to say the least so we are hoping he decides Pittsburgh is the right fit for him and his family.

With our $10 mil. that we have to spend on free agents I don't see us going after any of these guys right away. We will be actively searching for ways to fill our needs though. My top priorities in order of importance are as follows:
1. Find a veteran starting pitcher to compete for a spot with our young arms.
2. Fortify the pen. (we specifically need a lefty)
3. Improve the bench. (we need a utility infielder and someone who can provide some power near the back of the line up)
