Chicago's Levi Meyerle could be out for the rest of the season with a broken hand. Meyerle has been one of the leagues best players this season. He currently leads the league in batting average (.564), on-base percentage (.586), hits (31), and home runs (3). Meyerle's play has helped the Chicago White Stockings to top spot in the National League. Now many will be watching to see if Chicago can cope with the loss of their star player and continue on their winning ways.

Cincinnati starting pitcher Bobby Matthews is expected to be out of actions for 9 months with a partially torn ligament in his elbow. Cincinnati are currently in first place in the National League following two straight wins over Chicago. This year Matthews has chalked up 6 wins and 4 losses in 13 starts with a 3.29 ERA. Pitcher Bill Stearns will take over as Cincinnati's starter.

In the American League Baltimore remain in top spot after going 3-3 in June to be 10-5 on the season. Moving from the bottom up into second are Cleveland Forest Citys who are currently at 7-7 and are on a 4 game winning streak. Philadelphia slip into third at 7-8 and St. Louis Brown Stockings are 4th at 5-9.

In the National League Cincinnati Reds move to 9-6 and first spot after finishing the month with a 3-0 series win over Chicago White Stockings. Chicago fall to second and are 0-4 since losing third baseman Levi Meyerle to injury. Boston Red Stockings are third at 7-8 and Brooklyn Atlantics fourth at 6-9.

Brooklyn went 3-3 in June. On offense we have several players coming into form. Our best hitter hot the month was catcher Doug Allison with a .379 average, 10 RBI and 8 runs. Right fielder John Bass has finally found some form and center fielder Art Allison is on a 13 game hitting streak.
