April
Joe Tinker was hurt in spring training and was expected to miss the first six weeks of the season. Between the third base and shortstop positions, the Superbas rotated through Heinie Wagner, Mike McCormick, Chub Aubrey, Joe Cassidy, and Dave Shean with little success from any of them.

Disaster almost struck in the first week of the season when Billy Hamilton was hurt, Charlie Hickman was ejected and subsequently suspended, and Ben Koehler was hurt all in the same game. Hamilton’s injury ended up being relatively minor, as he only missed three games. Fortunately, Hickman’s suspension also ended up being only three games.

Brooklyn never missed a beat, though. Their starting pitching was phenomenal. The entire pitching staff had a 1.70 ERA in April, by far number one in the league. This allowed Brooklyn to post a 15-10 record on the month, though it was only good enough for third place 1 ½ games back.

May
The starting rotation continued to be dominant. Waddell, Nops, and Rucker combined for 21 wins by the end of May. Rucker ended up winning the National League Rookie of the Month Award for May.

The bullpen was led by Harry Kane who had not given up an earned run through 26 innings pitched at the end of May. Highball Wilson had 19 saves at the end of the month. Interestingly, he blew two saves in a row in May during a stretch when Brooklyn lost five in a row.

Ben Koehler had actually replaced Davy Jones as the starting center fielder. Interestingly, the Brooklyn team batting average only ranked fifth in the league, but most of the reason for that is due to the fact that Brooklyn starting third basemen combined to hit less than .150 up to that point in the season. The rest of the lineup was sound.

Brooklyn fell to two games behind Cincinnati in third place in the National League despite having a good month.

June
An amazing statistic for the month of June: 42 of Brooklyn’s 79 games were one run games. Brooklyn was 27-15 in those games which is a testament to how good Brooklyn’s pitching staff and bullpen had performed.

Harry Kane made it 35 1/3 innings before giving up an earned run. Meanwhile, Highball Wilson got his save total up to 27 by the All Star break while Jerry Nops and Nap Rucker were each on pace to surpass 20 wins. Rucker won the National League Rookie of the Month award for the second straight month.

Offensively, the injury bug struck in June. Hamilton, Cross, and Jones all ended up on the disabled list at the same time. Brooklyn’s offense was woefully pathetic during that stretch, but Brooklyn still managed a 16-10 record on the month. They finished June only a half game out of first place.

1907 All Star Rosters

July
July was a rough month for Brooklyn primarily because they simply couldn’t close down ball games. Highball Wilson had five blown saves in July, and when Brooklyn brought in Rube Kroh to try to be the closer, Kroh also blew his first save attempt. Overall, Brooklyn had seven blown saves in the month of July, and their final record on the month was 9-14.

The Brooklyn offense went into a significant slump in July as well. Tinker, Cross, and Hamilton drove the offense with very little help of others. Brooklyn lost by a score of 1-0 four times in the month of July (8 times on the year). Add in a six-week injury to Jerry Nops, and Brooklyn finished the month losing 10 of 11.

In the National League, Cincinnati and Chicago were two teams that were just too good. Brooklyn fell to a six game deficit in third place at the end of July.

August
Brooklyn got hot in August. They put together two seven-game win streaks thanks in large part to a dominant pitching staff led by rookie Nap Rucker. Rube Kroh found his rhythm as the closesr, and with Brooklyn being able to close out games again, they finished the month with a 21-6 record, and this allowed Brooklyn to leapfrog over Chicago and Cincinnati to the top of the National League, 2 ½ games ahead of both Chicago and Cincinnati.

At the end of the month, Joe Tinker led the National League in offensive WAR while Nap Rucker led the Majors in ERA.

September
Brooklyn continued winning in September. They started by winning 8 of their first 9, extending their lead to 4 ½ games, but with the all important series against Chicago and Cincinnati at the end of the month, Brooklyn couldn’t keep the momentum.

Brooklyn had a 4 ½ game lead with 9 games to play. Four of those games were against Chicago, and two were against Cincinnati. Brooklyn started off by losing 3 of 4 to Chicago, and their lead was whittled to 2 ½ games with 5 to play. Then Brooklyn split with Cincinnati. This worked in Brooklyn’s favor, as Cincinnati remained 2 ½ games back. However, Chicago swept three games in Philadelphia over the same span which brought them to only a single game back.

Brooklyn finished the season with a three game series against Boston, but they were in a less-than-ideal situation because Chicago finished their season with a double header the day after Brooklyn’s season finished. This caused Brooklyn to use their starting rotation to its fullest potential, but Brooklyn still lost two of three in that final series.

Meanwhile, Chicago just couldn’t put it together in their three game series against St. Louis. They lost the first game which put them in a position where they had to sweep the double header in order to tie for the league lead. However, they proceeded to lose the first game of the double header as well, and Brooklyn clinched the National League pennant a day after their season was complete.

World Series
The Philadelphia Athletics were set to square off against the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1907 World Series. Philadelphia blew the rest of the American League away in 1907 led by a potent offense featuring Frank Chance, John Knight, Eddie Collins, and Claude Ritchey. The pitching staff was also phenomenal behind the likes of 21-game winner Jimmy Dygert, Ed Killian, and Bobby Wallace.

Meanwhile, Brooklyn built their team predominantly on pitching and defense. From an offensive standpoint, Joe Tinker and Billy Hamilton led the team, but Brooklyn was team that made their money off of a pitching staff featuring the likes of Jerry Nops, Rube Waddell, and Nap Rucker.

Philadelphia was making their third World Series appearance without any championships. Meanwhile, Brooklyn was making their tenth World Series appearance with five championships.
Rube Waddell had a big game in game one against Ed Killian. He started off by tripling in a run in the 5th inning, and he eventually scored. Brooklyn held that 2-0 lead into the ninth when Bris Lord tripled and then John Knight drove him in with an RBI double. Brooklyn brought in Rube Kroh to close the came down, and Brooklyn won 2-1 taking an early 1-0 lead in the series.

Game two was a pitchers’ duel of epic proportions with Nap Rucker facing off against Jimmy Dygert. Bris Lord got the game’s only RBI in the top of the fifth when he singled home Eddie Collins, and Philadelphia held on to a 1-0 victory to even the series at a game apiece.

Game three was a higher scoring affair with neither starter, Jerry Nops or Bobby Wallace, making it past the sixth inning. Billy Hamilton had a big game for Brooklyn, notching 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Shad Barry also had three hits for Brooklyn while Claude Ritchey had three hits for Philadelphia. Hamilton keyeda three run sixth inning with a 2-RBI single to give Brooklyn a 5-3 lead, but the Brooklyn bullpen couldn’t nail it down. Philadephia scored two in the bottom of the sixth on a 2-RBI double by Bris Lord, and Ed Delahanty gave Philadelphia a lead they would not relinquish with an RBI double in the 7th.

The Brooklyn bullpen was a huge letdown again in game four. Rube Waddell struggled early, and Philadelphia put up 8 runs in the bottom of the 7th to take a commanding lead. Frank Chance had three RBIs and three runs scored for Philadelphia as their 11-6 victory game them a 3-1 lead in the series.

Brooklyn was never in game five. Philadelphia scored three in the first off of doubles by Ed Delahanty and Claude Ritchey, and then they added on a fourth highlighted by a triple from Eddie Collins. Jimmy Dygert pitched 8 1/3 giving up just one run, and Philadelphia clinched their first World Series title with a 4-1 victory. Dygert won the World Series MVP award by going 2-0 and posting a 0.52 ERA in 17 ½ innings.
